Places to see in ( Caen - France ) Eglise Saint Pierre
The Church of Saint-Pierre is a Roman Catholic church located on the Place Saint Pierre in the center of Caen in Normandy, northern France. It is dedicated to Saint Peter. The construction of the present building took place between the early 13th and the 16th centuries. The spire was destroyed on 9 July 1944 by a single 16 Inch shell, one of a fifteen-round salvo from the Royal Navy battleship HMS Rodney aimed at the 12th SS Panzer Division and has since been rebuilt.
The eastern apse of the church was built by Hector Sohier between 1518 and 1545. The interior choir and the exterior apse display an architecture that embodies the transition from Gothic to Renaissance. Until around the mid-19th century, the eastern end of the church faced onto a canal that was then covered and replaced by a road. Various artists and engravers recorded this relation of the church to the canal; for instance, the Scottish painter David Roberts made several very similar views, one of which (dated to c. 1830) is in Musée des Beaux-Arts in the Château de Caen or Caen Castle
Replacing a Romanesque church from the 12th century, the current Saint-Pierre church was built from the 13th to the 16th century, in Caen stone . Its particularity is to combine several architectural styles: Radiant Gothic, Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance style. Thus the west facade (XIVth century) belongs to the radiant Gothic, the balustrade of the triforium is in flamboyant Gothic (like that of the church Saint-Jean - Caen also), while the abundance of stone sculptures of the radiant chapels is reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance. Another characteristic point: the nave consists of two parts built at two different times (thirteenth and fourteenth centuries). In 1793, the church of St. Peter is transformed into Temple of Reason. In 1944, located in a neighborhood hard hit by the British bombing, the church sees the spire of its belfry and roof destroyed. Saint-Pierre is the subject of a restoration program in 1952-1953.

The church Saint-Jean de Caen is the parish church of the Saint-Jean district in Caen . This monument is the subject of a classification as historical monuments by the list of 1840. The first place of worship dedicated to the apostle John , was founded in the vii th century on a Roman road through the lower valley of the marshes of the Orne ; this axis connecting Augustodurum ( Bayeux ) to Noviomagus Lexoviorum ( Lisieux ) later became rue Exmoisine, now rue Saint-Jean. In 1954 - 1956 , the sarcophagi monoliths in Caen stone were discovered during work in the church.
They testify to the probable existence of a small necropolisalong the Roman road and an oratory founded nearby. From this pre-Romanesque sanctuary, there is nothing left. The church is mentioned for the first time in 1059 in the charter of foundation of the Abbey Saint Martin de Troarn . From this date, it is found in the texts under different names:
Saint-Jean-des-Champs,
Saint-Jean-de-l'Isle,
St. John the Hiemois .
In 1153 , Philip de Harcourt, bishop of Bayeux , erects the church in prebend of the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Bayeux . This foundation is confirmed by two papal bulls of Eugene III. As for the building it replaced, there are few traces of the Romanesque church. An ancient, leveled base discovered during consolidation work on the base of the central tower during the Reconstruction, one meter to the west of the current southeast stack, may be the ultimate testimony.
Very damaged during the Hundred Years War, especially during the siege of 1417 , the church was rebuilt in the xv th century (gate, gatehouse and nave) and xvi th century (apse and choir). Until the end of the xviii th century, the church was still surrounded by its cemetery . The edict of 1783 ordered the transfer of Caen cemeteries outside the walls; the new Saint-Jean cemetery is located in a vaulted quarry in Vaucelles . The ground left free is then erected of buildings which enclose the church
This church is the tower of Pisa Caen; it is indeed difficult not to see his tilted look. The tower-porch tilts indeed to the northwest ( 2.28 m in 1700) because the church was built on a marshy ground within the island Saint-Jean. That's why it's not over. Major foundation works are done after the Second World War; Concrete piles of 15 to 18 meters are planted under the church to stabilize it. However, following the finding of the aggravation of cracks on the periphery of the two pillars is that support the porch of the main entrance, the municipality took a decree on September 20, 2012 ordering the closure of the church. Consolidation work andof the portal are undertaken with realization of 52 piles of foundations of 21 m of depth to reach the hard ground. The church is again open to the public on June 7, 2013.
