Trip to Farndon Fields Farm shop and on to Foxton Locks - Leicestershire
A trip primarily to take a look at Foxton Locks but stopped off at Farndon Fields Farm shop in Market Harborough for a spot of lunch in their cafe. I didn't feel too great during this trip because it was over the border from Northamptonshire in Tiger land rather than our own Saintly shire.
Beware the car parks at Foxton locks, the short stay starts at 4 hours! and the machines do not give change. They do take calls to pay the charge or if you have the right phone app you can do it that way. There is an added admin charge for calls.
The site is very pleasant if the weather is good and plenty of people looked as though they were enjoying the pub - although I guess the drivers did not find it so great.

Places to see in ( Market Harborough - UK )
Market Harborough is a market town within the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England. Market Harborough is the administrative headquarters of Harborough District Council. Market Harborough sits on the Northamptonshire-Leicestershire border. Market Harborough was formerly at a crossroads for both road and rail; however the A6 now bypasses the town to the east and the A14 which carries east-west traffic is 6 miles (9.7 km) to the south. The town is served by East Midlands Trains with direct services to Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Derby and St Pancras International. Rail services to Rugby and Peterborough ended in 1966.
Market Harborough is located in an area which was formerly a part of the Rockingham Forest, a royal hunting forest used by the medieval monarchs starting with William I. Rockingham Road takes its name from the forest. The forest's original boundaries stretched from Market Harborough through to Stamford and included the settlements at Corby, Kettering, Desborough, Rothwell, Thrapston and Oundle.
The centre of the town is dominated by the steeple of St. Dionysius Parish Church which rises directly from the street, as there is no church yard. It was constructed in grey stone in 1300 with the church itself a later building of about 1470. Next to the church stands the Old Grammar School, a small timber building dating from 1614. The ground floor is open, creating a covered market area and there is a single room on the first floor. It has become a symbol of the town. The nearby square is largely pedestrianised and surrounded by buildings of varying styles. The upper end of the High Street is wide and contains mostly unspoiled Georgian buildings.
Market Harborough has two villages within its confines: Great Bowden lies over a hill about a mile from the town centre; Little Bowden is less than half a mile from the town centre. The three centres have largely coalesced through ribbon development and infill, although Great Bowden continues to retain a strong village identity.
Market Harborough is in a rural part of south Leicestershire, on the River Welland and close to the Northamptonshire border. The town is about 15 miles (24.1 km) south of Leicester via the A6, 17 miles (27.4 km) north of Northampton via the A508 and 10 miles (16.1 km) north west of Kettering. The town is near the A14 road running from the M1/M6 motorway Catthorpe Interchange to Felixstowe. The M1 is about 11 miles (17.7 km) west via the A4304 road.
Three miles north west of the town is Foxton Locks – ten canal locks consisting of two staircases each of five locks, on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal. It is named after the nearby village of Foxton where there is one of a very few remaining road swing bridges over the canal.
Market Harborough station is on the Midland Main Line and operated by East Midlands Trains. London St Pancras International is 70 minutes south. Northbound trains operate to Leicester (15 minutes), Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds and York. Leicester connections east and west. From November 2007 St Pancras has Eurostar services to the continent.

A Visit to Foxton Locks - Leicestershire
I visited Foxton Locks in Leicestershire to explore the ten canal locks that make up the longest flight of locks in Britain.
Located on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal about 5 km west of the Leicestershire town of Market Harborough the locks are named after the nearby village of Foxton.
My film joins a narrow boat (Calmer Karma) as it makes it way to the top lock before taking in the scenery along the canal side.

Farmer's Rural Crime Plea to Parents
Police in Leicestershire are asking parents to be mindful of where their children are playing this summer after a farmer, in the rural district of Harborough, suffered criminal damage to his irrigation system which was feeding lake water to his crops worth tens of thousands of pounds.
The advice was issued as part of Leicestershire Police's Safer Summer campaign, run each year to promote local social engagements at youth clubs and organised local activities, reducing instances of anti-social behaviour in local areas. People local to Harborough should visit the for details of youth clubs in the local area.
Police Constable 1291 David Sharpe part of the Safer Neighbourhood Team within Harborough and the Bowdens said: The trespass and criminal damage of the irrigation pump on Mr Stokes' field is significant in that it threatened his summer crop.
Local police are most concerned about the possibility of young people potentially drowning in the lake which feeds his crops.
PC Sharpe added: The problem with swimming unattended in remote lakes and field water is that: if you get into difficulty, there is no one there to help you. The lake bed may also feature unsafe items beneath the water line, such as fallen trees, which can prevent you from leaving the water.
I'd encourage parents to ensure they know where their children are at all times and talk to them about the dangers of trespassing on farmland.
Local farmer, Kevin Stokes sells his produce restaurants and locally via his farm shop. Whilst the repair to the damage to farm machinery cost a few hundred pounds, if the malfunction had not been caught in time, it could have destroyed an entire crop.
Mr Kevin Stokes of Fardon Fields Farm said: The farming community depends on its crops for its livelihood. I appeal to parents locally to consider the consequences and true cost of damaging farm machinery.
Farmland is not a safe place for children to play. Being around farmland and farm machinery can be dangerous. Please consider the risks of trespassing.
Anyone with information about crime or anti-social behaviour should call Leicestershire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous, on *0800 555 111.
Calls to 101 cost 15p for the entire call from both mobile phones and land lines *Please note some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call

Foxton Locks and the Inclined Plane Boat Lift
I spend a couple of hours at Foxton Locks on the Leicester Branch of the Grand Union Canal. We see the locks, the side pounds, the upper and lower arms and dock areas for the inclined plane, and the inclined plane itself. At the end of the day, a CRT work boat comes through and gives the gates a good scrape to get all the slime off.

Before the bulldozers move in: Eerie pictures show decaying six-bedroom mansion almost half a century after it was built by wealthy heir who fulfilled his dream of becoming a farmer

It was built as a countryside haven by a wealthy heir who fulfilled his dream of becoming a farmer - and for nine years it was the perfect family home.
But half a century later, this once-opulent six-bedroom mansion looks anything but lavish.
With its smashed windows, decaying plaster and graffiti-sprayed walls, Overstone House has become an eerie and empty shell visited only by ghost-hunters.
The enormous property, constructed with a tennis court, swimming pool and spiral staircase, was built in 1966 by Patrick Loyd after he had inherited a large sum of money from his grandfather.
The young man, who was a student at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, spent around eight years working the surrounding land as an arable and beef farmer.
He moved into the property aged just 24 and stayed there with his wife and three children until 1974 - when he left the UK for Guernsey for tax reasons.
Hidden away from any main road in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, the house overlooks the River Jordan away from the public gaze.
Foxton Locks a Boating Tale
Foxton Locks are one of the wonders of our waterways. One of the must do things on our island is to go through them on a boat, and thankfully I got the chance to do that on a friends.
