Fatih Mosque
Mosque in Western Districts
The Fatih was the first great imperial mosque built in İstanbul following the Conquest. Mehmet the Conqueror chose to locate it on the hilltop site of the ruined Church of the Apostles, burial place of Constantine and other Byzantine emperors. Mehmet decided to be buried here as well; his tomb is behind the mosque and is inevitably filled with worshippers.

The original külliye (mosque complex), finished in 1470, was enormous. Set in extensive grounds, it included 15 charitable establishments such as medreses (Islamic schools of higher studies), a hospice for travellers and a caravanserai. Many of these still stand; the most interesting is the multidomed tabhane (inn for travelling dervishes) to the southeast of the mosque. Its columns are said to have been originally used in the Church of the Apostles.
Unfortunately the mosque you see today is not the one Mehmet built. The original stood for nearly 300 years before toppling in an earthquake in 1766. The current baroque-style mosque was constructed between 1767 and 1771.
The front courtyard of the mosque is a favourite place for locals to congregate. On Wednesday the streets behind and to the north of the mosque host the Çarşamba Pazarı (Wednesday Market), selling food, clothing and household goods.

The reason I travel apart from just the fact that is fun is because it is the best education for me and I learn so much from it. Not just the history and about the places I visit but mainly from the people I meet. I can't explain how much I love meeting new people and widening my world. Religious Turks pray in Istanbul's Fatih mosque
(22 Jul 2016) Religious Turks gathered for prayers in Istanbul's Fatih mosque on Friday.
Most supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's governing AK party come from Turkey's more conservative and traditional classes.
Many of them feel that their views and traditions were given short shrift under Turkey's previous, staunchly secular rulers, most strongly represented in the armed forces who historically had a prominent role in the country's life.
Their support for Erdogan is due not only to the economic advances made under the AK party's decade in power, but also to the president's perceived personal piety and a more visible role for Islam in the country's public life.

Turkey - Istanbul - Child playing inside the Fatih mosque (Mehmet)
Child playing inside the Fatih mosque (Mehmet), Istanbul, Turkey.
Fatih Camii Istanbul Turkey , مسجد فاتح استنبول
Located in the middle of the historical peninsula of Istanbul in Fatih neighbourhood, the Fatih Mosque (Fatih Camii) is the mosque of Fatih Mosque Complex (Fatih Külliyesi) commissioned in 1463, ten years after the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453. The construction of the mosque lasted seven years and was finished in 1470. It was the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II (Mehmet the Conqueror) who commissioned the mosque, therefore his name was given to the mosque as well as neighbourhood. In Turkish, Fatih means “the conqueror”.
Fatih Mosque Complex used to contain several other structures including madrasas (religious high schools), dormitory for students, hospice, library, hospital, market, hamam, and tombs; unfortunately only madrasas, library, hospice, and tombs are surviving today. Other structures were destroyed as a result of the fires, earthquakes, and road construction took place in 1950s.
From Imperial Cemetery of Byzantine Empire to Ottoman Imperial Mosque
Fatih Mosque Complex was built on the site of the Church of Holy Apostles built in the first half of the fourth century CE. Even, the hospice located on the southeast of Fatih Mosque has a large courtyard and it is decorated with sixteen beautiful columns made from verdo antico, granite, and marble. It is believed that these columns were salvaged from the Church of the Holy Apostles. During the Byzantine period, the Church of the Holy Apostles was the most important church after the Hagia Sophia and a number Byzantine emperors including Constantine I were buried there.
The mosque complex was built by the imperial architect of the time, Atik Sinan (Sinan the Elder) and it is a huge complex covering an area of 3,400 square meters. However, the original mosque -built in 1470- was badly damaged in the 1509, 1557, and 1754 earthquakes. Lastly, it was completely destroyed by an earthquake on 22 May 1766 when the main dome collapsed and the walls were irreparably damaged. The current mosque -designed on a completely different plan than the fifteenth century mosque- was completed in 1771 by architect Mehmet Tahir during the reign of Mustafa III.
Amazing facts about the Fatih Mosque Complex
Only surviving elements from the first (fifteenth century) Fatih Mosque Complex are the mosque’s external portal, tombs of Mehmet II and his wife, and some parts of the mosque’s courtyard. Rest of the mosque is from the eighteenth century rebuilding.
Courtyard of the Fatih Mosque Complex is one of the largest mosque patios, therefore important people’s funeral ceremonies take place in Fatih Mosque.
Each wednesday the largest street market of Istanbul (Fatih Pazarı) takes place around the Fatih Mosque.
How to get to the Fatih Mosque
Located in Fatih, on Fevzipaşa Avenue, the easiest way to get to the Fatih Mosque is to take bus either from Taksim or Eminönü passing by Fatih and get off at Fatih Camii Bus Stop.
What else nearby?
Fatih Mosque is in the middle of Istanbul’s historical peninsula and there are a number of important landmarks of Istanbul close to the Fatih Mosque including Chora Museum, Fethiye Museum, Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque, and Valens Aqueduct. In addition, there are several traditional and affordable pricy restaurants close to the Fatih Mosque Complex such as Öz Kilis Kebap Salonu, Sedef Döner, Fatih Dürüm, and Sur Ocakbaşı.
Opening hours of the Fatih Mosque
The Fatih Mosque is open from 9am-6pm every day, but closed at prayer times. Fatih Mosque is very busy during Friday noon prayers, make sure to arrange your visit accordingly. Fatih Mosque - just like other public mosques of Istanbul- does not have an entrance fee or ticket price, hence donations are welcome.

Joyful Walk in Fatih Mosque - It is G-I-A-N-T !!!
Fatih Mosque is actually a part of Fatih Kulliye (Kulliye means a social complex which generally constist of a mosque, a fountain (to wudu before pray), madrasah (like a college and also a university), a sibyan mektebi (first school), a library, a darussifa (hospital), a hamam (bath) and a graveyard.
Fatih Camii is the mosque in the Fatih Kulliye. It is absolutely GIANT and it triggers yor soul completely when you step in.
There is fabulous islamic calligraphies inside.
Also you can see the diversity of the people (ethnical and social diversity) inside the mosque garden. People hang out, have their dinner on this garden all the times of the day. In ramadan people break their fast on this garden. It is a place to socialize and relax. It is so windy everytime (spring, summer, autumn, winter, day, night .....)
The mosque has really a spiritual side. Its giant dome makes it like the King of the buldings around.
Believe me you will not want to leave this mosque after you get in.
Şehzade (Mehmet) Mosque and Complex
Şehzade Mehmet Mosque and Complex
The Şehzade Mosque (Turkish: 'Şehzade Camii') is a 16th-century Ottoman imperial mosque located in the district of Fatih, on the third hill of Istanbul, Turkey. It was commissioned by Süleyman the Magnificent as a memorial to his son Şehzade Mehmed who died in 1543. It is sometimes referred to as the Prince's Mosque in English.
History
The construction of the Şehzade Complex (külliye) was ordered by the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent as a memorial to his favorite son Şehzade Mehmed (born 1520-1) who died in 1543 while returning to Istanbul after a victorious military campaign in Hungary.[2] Mehmed was the eldest son of Süleyman's only legal wife Hürrem - although not his eldest son - and before his untimely death he was primed to accept the sultanate following Süleyman's reign. Süleyman is said to have personally mourned the death of Mehmed for forty days at his temporary tomb in Istanbul, the site upon which the imperial architect Mimar Sinan would construct a lavish mausoleum to Mehmed as one part of a larger mosque complex dedicated to the princely heir. The complex was Sinan's first important imperial commission and ultimately one of his most ambitious architectural works, even though it was designed early in his long career.

Suleymaniye Mosque-Istanbul
The Süleymaniye Mosque is less visited than the Blue Mosque but definitely worth a visit. As a bonus, you get a great view of New Istanbul, the Golden Horn, and the Bosporus Strait. The mosque was built on the order of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The construction work began in 1550 and the mosque was finished in 1557 and designed by the greatest architect of his time, Mimar Sinan. The mosque was extensively renovated from 2008-2010.
The main dome is 174 feet high and has a diameter of 90 feet. At the time it was built, the dome was the highest in the Ottoman Empire.
This vast religious complex blended Islamic and Byzantine architectural elements. It combines tall, slender minarets with large domed buildings supported by half domes in the style of the Byzantine church Hagia Sophia.

Nuruosmaniye Mosque
My instagram page
Subscribe to my channel here:
Nuruosmaniye Mosque
Istanbul’s first mosque designed in Baroque style, Nuruosmaniye Mosque, was built by architect Mustafa Ağa and a non-Muslim Greek master Simeon Kalfa on one of the seven hills of Istanbul. It is located right next to the entrance of the Grand Bazaar in the Çemberlitas neighborhood of Fatih district. The construction of the mosque started in 1748 on the request of Sultan Mahmud, but on his death it was completed by the support of his brother and successor Sultan Osman III in 1755. The mosque was named “Nuruosmaniye”, meaning “the light of Osman”, after Osman III, but also because the mosque has many windows providing lots of light in the mosque. Nuruosmaniye Mosque was built as a part of a larger complex that consisted of a madrasa (Islamic school), imaret (soup kitchen), muvakkit’s (timekeeper’s) chamber, library, han (trade centre) and surrounding shops. In 2010, the restoration work on the mosque commenced. The mosque was re-opened for worship in 2012.
The mosque was constructed during an era of increased Western influence in architecture, and as such, Nuruosmaniye Mosque can be considered a milestone of Ottoman Architecture. It also has some distinctive architectural characteristics distinguishing it from other mosques. First, it is the first royal religious complex that displays baroque and neo-classical elements such as shells, scrolls, molded cornices, and cartouches in its flamboyant surface decoration. Second, it has a porched-shaped polygonal courtyard without an ablution fountain, which is a common feature in Ottoman architecture. Another important feature of the building is the polygonal shape of the mihrab (niche) projection and the way it is covered with a half dome. The mosque has one of the biggest domes amongst Ottoman structures, with 32 windows surrounding it. The mosque is also illuminated by 174 windows, and has two minarets with two balconies.
