Port of Southampton, Southampton, England, United Kingdom, Europe
The Port of Southampton is a major passenger and cargo port located in the central part of the south coast of England. It benefits from a sheltered location, unique double tides, close proximity to the motorway network and good rail links. Owned and operated by Associated British Ports since 1982, the port is the busiest cruise terminal and second largest container port in the UK. The port is located ten miles (16 km) inland, between the confluence of the rivers Test and Itchen and the head of the mile wide inlet (technically a ria or drowned valley), known as Southampton Water. The mouth of the inlet is protected from the effects of foul weather by the mass of the Isle of Wight, which gives the port an advantageous sheltered location. Additional advantages include a densely populated hinterland and close proximity to London, and excellent rail and road links to the rest of Britain which, however, bypass the congestion of London. The average tidal range is approximately 5 feet (1.5 metres), with 17 hours per day of rising water thanks to the port's double tides. These allow the largest container and cruise ships access to the port for up to 80 per cent of the time, according to the container terminal operator DP World Southampton. A common misconception is that the double tide is caused by 'one tide coming up each side of the Isle of Wight'. However, the effect is actually caused as a result of tidal flow through the English Channel. High tide at one end of the Channel (Dover) occurs at the same time as low tide at the other end (Land's End). Points near the centre have one high water as the tidal swell goes from left to right, another as it then goes from right to left, making two for each one at either end, neither as high as the one at each end. The first full-time cruise ship was Ceylon, a P&O liner converted in 1881. Up to this point ship owners had occasionally used liners for off-season cruising. From 1881 the growth of the cruise industry proceeded slowly until the 1970s when major shipping operators became badly affected by the rise in popularity of longhaul jet air travel. Faced with falling demand for their mail and passengers services they turned their business to holiday cruises voyages that usually end where they begin, providing short leisure visits to other ports on the way. In the case of Southampton at the time ships affected included Cunard's QE2 and the P&O vessels SS Oriana and SS Canberra: all originally built as fast liners, they began to offer a growing variety of cruises. Through the 1990s cruising's growing popularity saw huge increases in ship size and numbers as well as terminal capacity, with Southampton becoming one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. Cruise ship sizes have risen substantially in recent years. Currently the largest vessel using the Port of Southampton is Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas, with a length of 338.8m, a gross tonnage of 154,407 and a maximum passenger capacity of 4,375. As a consequence of these high capacities, the passenger port is currently experiencing its busiest period in terms of either tonnage of shipping or number of passengers (but not the actual number of ships). In 2005, the number of passengers using the port totalled 738,000, higher than it had been in any one year of the previous century. Since then it has increased year on year, and the figure for 2010 was 1.2 million passengers, representing 307 calls by passenger ships. On average, each docking is worth £1.25 million to the local economy. The very modern and well-equipped container terminal is operated by DP World Southampton. The container port has 210 acres (85 ha) of land -- not counting the 375 acres (152 ha) in the older Western Docks -- available for port operations. Loading and unloading operations can be performed simultaneously on four large deep-sea container ships, plus one smaller ship 500 ft (150m) in length. This makes it the country's second largest such terminal, after that at Felixstowe. Southampton handles most of the trade from the Far East. The railway line from Southampton has recently been upgraded to a loading gauge of W10 on the route between the container port and the ABP terminal in Birmingham, where it links with lines that have already received this treatment. This allows the railway line to handle the taller containers now in widespread use. Permission has been received from the Marine Management Organisation to extend the container terminal into berths 201 and 202. The quay is to be rebuilt, and will be over 1640 ft (500m) in length. The depth of water in the main channel is to be increased by dredging to 63 ft (16m).

After breakfast Sean and Stef prepare their cruise tags and check out of their hotel the Hampton by Hilton, London Waterloo. Then it's a short walk to the London Waterloo train station where Sean and Stef take the South Western Railway to Southampton. Sean and Stef purchased first class tickets to make more room for their bags. A short 90 minute ride later Sean and Stef arrive in the Southampton train station where they intended on taking a cab to the port but they only take cash. So they opted instead for an Uber. A five minute uber ride later and Sean and Stef arrive at the Ocean Terminal where the P&O Ventura waits to take them on a Norwegian journey!
Sean and Stef check in to the P&O Ventura and after a delightful coffee break it's time to board the ship. Sean and Stef embark on the ship and find their inside stateroom. Their luggage was their waiting for them so they unpack and get ready for muster drill, the lifeboat drill complete with life vests!
After muster drill it's time to sail away from Southampton. After a fun and chilly sail away Sean and Stef head back to the cabin to shower and change for dinner. Dinner tonight is at Sindhu at East, the Indian restaurant on board. After Sindhu Sean and Stef enjoy live music in the atrium followed by drinks in the Havana club.
It's been a fantastic embarkation day on the P&O Ventura. Tomorrow is ship tour day as Sean and Stef sail to Norway.

The Port of Southampton is a major passenger and cargo port located in the central part of the south coast of England. It has been an important port since the Roman occupation of Britain nearly two thousand years ago, and has a multifaceted history. From the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century, it was a centre for naval shipbuilding and a departure point for soldiers going to war. The port also played a role in the development of hovercraft, flying boat services, seaplanes and the Spitfire fighter plane. Before the advent of jet travel, Southampton was Britain's gateway to the world. The port also played a minor role in the history of Britain's canals.
RMS Titanic is, as of the time of its construction, the largest ship ever built, nearly 900 feet long and 25 stories high. The pride of J. Bruce Ismay and the White Star Line, this elegant 46,000-ton luxury ocean liner was launched in April 1912 with sixteen watertight compartments in the lower section which can be sealed individually with the intention that the mighty ship remain afloat even on collision with another vessel, providing plenty of time to summon assistance with the state-of-the-art five kilowatt Marconi wireless telegraph apparatus.
This magnificent steamship, constructed at an estimated cost of £1,564,000 and travelling with an 885-person crew, is equipped with every luxury and built to serve a clientèle which includes many famous millionaires. Titanic's maximum total capacity is 3547 passengers, her port of registry is Liverpool. She carries the sixteen lifeboats required by regulations and an additional four collapsible lifeboats; these twenty boats can carry a combined maximum of 1098 people.
Trans-Atlantic travel is offered in first, second and third-class price ranges, with the first class offering the most extensive amenities: a squash court, gymnasium, Turkish bath, heated salt-water swimming pool, deck games such as ring toss or shuffleboard, a fully stocked library, a variety of cafés and lounges, and dining halls where first class passengers may dine in opulence. Even the facilities in third class are excellent compared to those of other ocean liners of the era.
One way fares for the trans-Atlantic crossing (1912 currency) are a not-insubstantial £870 for a First Class parlour suite, £30 for a First Class berth, £12 for Second Class and a somewhat more economical £3 to £8 for Third Class. Constructed by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, the RMS Titanic departs Southampton to speed the well-to-do and many emigrants on their way toward New York City. The maiden voyage in April 1912 will have 2,228 people on board including notables such as John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest man in the world.

Titanic 2 Will Cross the Ocean Soon, You Can Get Aboard
Have you ever wondered what it was like to travel on Titanic? Well, soon you’ll be able to take a trip on the greatest liner of all time, without risking your life. For over a century, the history of the Titanic has fascinated people all over the planet. Lucky for us, businessman Clive Palmer, one of the richest men in Australia, is a fan himself. In 2012, he announced his project to build a replica of the legendary ship. That was exactly 100 years after the real Titanic went down in the North Atlantic.
Palmer wanted to recreate the whole experience so much that he named his cruise company Blue Star Line. It’s a nod to The White Star Line, which owned the original Titanic. This man forked over $500 million to make his dream come true. And 7 years later, the construction’s finally coming to an end.

Animation is created by Bright Side.
SUMMARY:
- Designers and historians made sure that the interiors were as close to the original liner as possible.
- Just imagine: A library, a gymnasium, and even Turkish baths were on board this glorious ship over 100 years ago!
- Like its predecessor, it'll feature a squash court and a gym, and be furnished with the newest fitness equipment, at least by the century-old standards.
- Animals enjoyed being well taken care of aboard too, especially 12 pooches who had their own kennel.
- One of the most lavish spaces of theTitanic was the lounge. The walls in there were trimmed with mother of pearl and mahogany wood.
- And let’s not forget the extravagant dining room of the first class. It was 92 feet wide and 114 feet long.
- The ship will serve 3 categories of passengers, so there will be 3 types of cabins accordingly. The first-class will enjoy more spacious suites with large canopy beds, tables and even their own fireplaces for decoration.
- The second-class ones will be less luxurious but quite cozy. They’ll have bunk beds or sofas embedded right in the walls.
- And the third-class cabins will also be just like a century ago. They were the smallest and the most humble ones, and often had 4 cots in a room; but that was still more than decent for that time.
- Titanic II will accommodate around 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members as well, but the number of rafts and life jackets will be increased significantly.
- The new Titanic will have a stronger, welded hull, rather than a riveted one. Apparently, this part of the boat was damaged when it crashed into the iceberg, allowing water to gush in.
- Titanic II will have an extra deck, raising the total number to 10 rather than 9, as it was in 1912.
- To allow the passengers to experience the bygone era to the max, the crew will give out big dresses and tuxedos. They even thought about having no internet or TV onboard.
- Its maiden voyage is scheduled for 2022. The ship will travel from Dubai to the English city of Southampton, and then to New York, following the route of its legendary ancestor.
