Names released in crash at Flight 93 chapel
Reported by: Melanie Gillespie
STONYCREEK TWP., Pa. -- One person is dead and another injured after two cars crash into the Flight 93 chapel in Somerset County.
Five accidents in two years, including three this year at the intersection in front of the Flight 93 chapel in Stonycreek Township.
The bishop of the chapel was the first one on scene and the first one to help when he heard the accident just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
State police said Amanda Price's car collided with Barbara Custer's at the intersection.
Custer ended up slamming into the church, while Price hit the newly dedicated bell tower.
Custer was killed in the crash and Price was flown to Memorial Medical Center where she's in serious condition.
As far as damage to the church goes, it looks minor from the outside, but on the inside, the Flight 93 Memorial room is destroyed and will have to be rebuilt.
Seeing the first deadly accident in his time here, the bishop said something needs to be done.
Normal church services may have to be postponed until the chapel is looked at structurally, but the bishop plans to hold a prayer service in honor of Custer and her family.

Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Flight 93
By: Maria Miller
SHANKSVILLE, Pa. -- A touching tribute was held Thursday morning to 40 of the passengers and crew who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
During the ceremony, in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the newly minted Congressional Gold Medal was presented. It was described by two children who were just babies when they each lost a parent on that fateful day.
The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award the U.S. Congress can bestow, and it's shared only with a small list of people who have made a significant impact on American history and culture. It's shared with people like George Washington, the Tuskeegee Airmen and Mother Theresa.
The medal for Flight 93 comes as part of the Fallen Heroes of 9/11 Act that was created by Congress in December, 2011.
It's one of three medals presented to all of the men and women who lost their lives in the terror attacks on the United State 13 years ago. Each medal has its own design.
The medal presented to the victims of Flight 93 is engraved with a scene of the crash site. The front of the medal has a sandstone boulder surrounded by trees with an inscription that reads, A common field one day, a field of honor forever.
The back of the medal shows a picture of the U.S. Capitol with 40 stars that represent the passengers and crew on Flight 93. It reads, Their courageous action will be remembered forever.
Forty people united with a single purpose and took on the mantle of heroism and stopped the hand of evil before it could strike another blow against our nation in Washington, DC, said Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett. Some of the families are here, others are here with us in spirit. This state and this nation are all here with us in spirit today.
The medal was on display at the National Memorial in Somerset County throughout the morning Thursday for visitors to see. It's now in the possession of the National Park Service. They said they'll keep it on display at the memorial for the next several days.
The medal will eventually be housed in a permanent display inside the Visitor's Center when it's completed, tentatively by next year.

The Flight 93 Tower of Voices will be dedicated September 9th. The tower is “a 93-foot tall concrete memorial that will serve as a landmark for Flight 93 National Memorial from the highway, marking the gateway to the park. Set among a ring of trees, the 93-foot tall tower will feature 40 wind chimes, whose sound will resonate throughout the memorial to honor each of the passengers and crew members.”
This video contains a sample of what the chimes might sound like when completed, along with construction photos from our upcoming story on the tower. Audio copyright Sam Pellman, courtesy nps.gov. Full recording available at
