Big Bend Explorations, January 2020, Day 1
“According to Indian legend, when the Great Creator made the Earth and finished placing the stars in the sky, the birds in the air and the fish in the sea, there was a large pile of rejected stony material left over. Finished with His job, He threw this into one heap and made the Big Bend.” So said Ross Maxwell, a geologist and first superintendent of Big Bend National Park. It had been five years since I had traversed this remarkable region. I was eager for a return trip, as well as an opportunity to take my Jeep Gladiator on its maiden adventure. So, some friends and I assembled a crew of six folks (and one way cool dog) in four vehicles to spend four days in Pinto Canyon, Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park. On day 1, we drive from Marfa through Pinto Canyon to Ruidosa, then to Fort Leaton near Presidio, then on to Guale 1 and 2 Campsites on Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Christmas on the Border - Texas Parks and Wildlife [Official]
The first Christmas celebration in Mexico took place in 1538 when missionaries brought Roman Catholicism to the new continent. Ever since then, the story of La Posada, where Joseph and Mary look for a place to stay the night on the original Christmas eve, has been celebrated in this part of the world. Texas Parks and Wildlife takes us to Presidio, Texas where folks from both sides of the border bring this religious story to life.
Fort Leaton will present La Posada again this year on December 18th. Las Posadas begins on December 16 and continues for nine days followed by the presentation of gifts on January 6 which is called Dia de los Tres Reyes or Three King Day. Repairing the Adobe Walls in the Presidio Officers' Club
No place in the Presidio is more beloved than the historic Officers' Club, located on the Main Post. Over the course 235 years, the building has played many roles. It served as offices and living quarters for the fort commander, as a post headquarters, as officers' quarters, and as a social center for the Spanish, Mexican, and United States armies. With each new use the building has grown and evolved, like the Presidio itself.
Today, the oldest and most revered building in the Presidio (and one of the two oldest in San Francisco) is undergoing a comprehensive historic rehabilitation that will revive its original grandeur and restore it as a focal point for visitors and as a venue for cultural events.
This video describes the process of repairing the historic adobe walls inside the Officers' Club.
The Officers' Club will reopen as a community and social hub housing the Presidio Heritage Center in 2013. The project is expected to receive a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
