5 Cape Dutch Wine Estates to have lunch in Cape Town
Cape Dutch Wine Estates have this in common; good food, excellent wine and beautiful architecture. This makes them great venues for functions
We have chosen 5 Estates. It is by no means an exhaustive list. It is however, a good basis to start organising your time in the Cape. So let's introduce the 5 Estates.
1. Lanzerac
It is one of the oldest farms on the Stellenbosch area and was established in the 1700's.
It has been the trusted lunch venue for locals for many years and popular with tourists. Whether you want to stay over, get married, have lunch go for wine tasting or just have scones and tea. It is always be an enjoyable experience.
2. Boschendal
Whether you visit for a morning afternoon or for a full day, there are certainly lots to do at Boschendal. This could be anything from a picnic, swimming in a dam, trout fishing, or horse riding. You can even get married there. So a good place to stop for lunch.
3. Spier
With 4 restaurants and picnics on offer you will not go hungry. You may also want to combine it with a Segway tour. Check if there are any local artists performing at amphitheatre in the evening
3. Vergelegen
Favourite of many locals and tourists. It is also the oldest farm in the area. The first owner, Adrian, was the son of the first governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. Today the farm is well developed and their wines compete with the best in the world.
One attraction not to be missed is the lovely Camphor trees planted by Adrian, which is in front of the restaurant. The gardens are a must see and in December the hydrangeas are in bloom, which give an awesome purple picture.
Vergelegen is to be enjoyed by all ages. You can visit the wineries, or have picnic on the lawn, or have cheesecake in the Stables restaurant. There is also a more formal option of dining in the Camphors at Vergelegen restaurant.
4. Lourensford
The Lourensford Estate was once part of the Vergelegen Wine Estate. Today this wine making estate also farms with flowers and fruit. Be sure to visit the art studio, take a guided walk, do some mountain biking or take a tour of the gardens. Visit The Millhouse Kitchen for lunch. They only use locally produced ingredients. A great event is the weekly market where you can taste the Estate's wine and beer available as well as crafts and art.

Young Guns 5 - Throwing out the textbook
Book your tickets online at
Wine Cellar’s much-anticipated Young Guns events are back. Now in its 5th year, Young Guns is a chance to meet the talented young winemakers who are throwing out the textbook and pushing the boundaries of winemaking. Most importantly, you will be tasting the wines that they want to drink, produced in a style that they choose to make all under their own labels. Many of them, of course, have serious day jobs and work for notable wineries. Young Guns 5 is brought to you by Wine Cellar and Tsogo Sun and will be held on the 24th, 25th and 26th of June in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
Each year Wine Cellar invites some of the country’s most innovative 20 and 30-somethings to showcase their wines and explain their philosophy to an audience of eager tasters. This informal yet seated tasting will once again be filled with great wine, music and much laughter. Since its debut in 2011, Young Guns has become a highlight of the South African tasting calendar and former participants such as Peter-Allan Finlayson, Craig Hawkins and Chris and Suzaan Alheit have gone on to become today’s winemaking stars. To add to the excitement, this year’s line-up will include a Mystery Vintage Gun, whose identity will only be revealed on the night!

Constantia - Buitenverwachting - Hidden gems
Buitenverwachting – Beyond Expectations!!!
This place really is beyond expectations. They have platters that perfectly pair with their wines, artisanal coffee, a lovely restaurant and cater for weddings and other functions.
Their Flagship Bordeaux blend, Christine was also at the top of our list with complexity and length that produces a wine with great ageing potential.
This beautiful farm on the east-facing slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg and barely 12km from False Bay, originally formed part of the Constantia Estate, which was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa.
Chef Edgar Osojnik’s Austrian roots are evident in their dining experience, which is a delight for the taste buds of the connoisseur.
Edgar’s sense of artistry are portrayed to perfection adding a mouth-watering experience for all palates. Menus are frequently changed, using only the finest produce sourced locally and internationally. “Voted one of the Top 100 Restaurants” American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards – 2016.
Their CoffeeBloc serves world class coffee made from the highest grade beans and roasted at Buitenverwachting by Quaffee who also supply a variety of coffee machines and accessories. Coffee Connoisseur Lars has put his stamp of approval on the selection as is fanatical about the quality and consistency of what gets served here.
If you are looking for more than food, wine and great scenery, you will find Meagan Maack and Colette Martin’s Jewellery collection on display in the tasting room. They also manufacture their jewellery on the Estate in one of the original Cape Dutch buildings. Meagan Maack and Colette Martin go back a long way and have achieved their aspirational dream which is to make exquisite, high quality Jewellery.
We visited Buitenverwachting and selected their Wooded Sauvignon blanc called Maximus (28 months in new french oak) as our gem. It is simply one of a kind.

Merryvale Wines at Wine Watch with Winemaker
Then the next night Thursday, April 2 we have one of the top wineries to visit in St. Helen, Merryvale Winery. Some of our wine drinking people with stronger constitutions would tell you the reason is because Merryvale’s tasting room is open till 6pm so you tasters that never want to quit usually end up here as it is one of the only wineries in Napa open past 4:30. But… the wines are also outstanding with their top iconic Bordeaux blend, Profile being one of the best wines in its class in any given vintage. I remember when the winery used to conduct blind tastings with Profile versus other top level wines from Napa including; Insignia, Opus one, SLWC Cask 23, etc. and the Profile always finished in one of the top spots usually 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
Join us as we taste through the new releases from this landmark winery along with a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines prepared by Wine Watch Caterings Toni Lampasone. The fee for this tasting is $95+ tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.
