Chile: Walking tour of Pucon - International Living
Walking tour of Pucon, Chile - International Living
internationalliving.com. The popular resort town of Pucon, in Chile's Lake District, lies on the shores of Lake Villarica. At just over 400 miles from the capital of Santiago, it's a driveable distance--but it's also only an hour or so from the regional airport of Temuco. Thanks to the area's Germanic heritage, Pucon looks a bit like a Swiss alpine village, but also a bit like a New England resort town, with shops selling hiking and mountain gear, and restaurants offering a range of international cuisines. The town is packed during the summer season of Jan-Feb, but is more tranquil much of the rest of the year.

We traveled to Pucon in the south of chile, which is one of my favorite places on earth. We went hiking in the national parks, swimming under a waterfall and relaxing at the cleanest beaches of all time or in the most wonderful hot water thermes ever. With the beautiful lake and the volcano at sunset a day couldn't be more perfect.
Pucón is a Chilean city and commune administered by the municipality of Pucón. It is located in the Province of Cautín, Araucanía Region, 100 km to the southeast of Temuco and 780 km to the south of Santiago. It is on the eastern shore of Lake Villarrica, and Villarrica volcano is located roughly 17 km to the south.
Pucón's location by a lake and volcano, along with its relatively stable climate, especially in summer, make it a popular destination for tourists. It offers a variety of sports and activities for tourists, including water skiing, snow skiing, backpacking, white water rafting and kayaking, horse back riding, natural hot springs, zip line rides, skydiving and guided ascents of Villarrica volcano.
Villarrica is the closest volcano to Pucón and is frequently climbed from the town. Other volcanoes in the area include Mocho-Choshuenco, Quetrupillán and Lanín. Villarrica has had more than 82 eruptions since 1558, the most recent of which occurred on March 3, 2015. It is possible to climb it throughout the year, if weather and volcanic activity permit. During winter, the summit is completely covered by snow, and offers views of at least seven of the surrounding lakes.
National parks in the area include Villarrica National Park, Huerquehue National Park and Villarrica National Reserve. Some of the main lakes near Pucón are Villarrica, Caburgua and Tinquilco.
There are several hot springs and spas in the commune of Pucón and the surrounding area, including: Palguín, Rio Blanco, Huife, Quimey-Co and Los Pozones. The nearby commune of Curarrehue also contains popular spas, including: Menetúe, San Luis, Trancura, Panqui and Ancamil.

Pucón, Chile - Things to do - Travel Guide
Pucón is extremely popular both with Chileans and foreigners for the beautiful views of Volcano Villarrica , which is the highest and most-active climbable volcano in South America. The city centre is a backpacker's paradise, filled with travel agencies offering a wide range of day trips. Apparently, also the night-life is quite active. If you don't like it crowded, avoid January and February as they are the busiest months. We visited in February.
We stayed just outside of the town in Caburgua on a lovely tranquil estate, Hotel Salto del Carileufu . From here we could explore the area avoiding the busy town centre unless eating out. Don't get me wrong it was a lovely place but in this guide we stick to things you can do in the area, around Pucón, rather than the town.
We visited numerous Waterfalls like Ojos Del Caburgua, and Salto El Léon. Spent hours just driving the local area with so many lakes and views to stop at and take pictures.
A highlight shown in the video was Termas Geometricas. It's a 2 hour scenic drive from Pucon and the last 30 minutes is on a bumpy gravel road, but don't let that put you off. Most 2 wheel drive cars are fine if you take it slow! It is really is an amazing place, Highly recommend you make the effort.
Anyway we hope you enjoy the video and follow us on to Argentina for the next part of our trip!

Pucón: Salto Palguin and Paso Chinay is part of the
#patagonia #trip : a #travel video through #argentinia and #chile
9 October 2017
We considered #Pucón as the beginning of our Patagonia #roundtrip. I really wanted to climb the #Villaricca #Vulcano. Unfortunately this was only possible after 2 days. So we had to spend 2 more days in Pucón. That is no problem at all. There is a lot to do out there!
We took the camper and drove to Palguin Alto. In the Palguin valley you will find 6 #waterfalls. We have visited the Salto Palguin only.
After visiting the Salto Palguin we continued the dirty road and passed the Termas Palguin. A few kilometers further the road was for 4x4 cars only. We parked the camper at a small parking and hiked the last 500 m to Quetrupillán o Chinay in the Villaricca National Park. The Quetrupillán o Chinay was closed. We have hiked on the Paso Chinay. There was a lot of snow on the road, so we understood why it was not possible to take this road on Thursday when we are heading for San Martin de los Andes in Argentina.
Just before the top of the Paso Chinay there was too much snow for hiking. We turned back and found a place to stay in Pucón at the Lago Villaricca.

#Pucón – San Martin de los Andes by Hua Hum Ferry on Lago Pirihueico
12 October 2017
After 3 days in Pucón the #Patogonia #Trip really started. This first stage was heading from Pucón in #Chile to San Martin de los Andes in #Argentina. The plan was to drive the 4x4 road over the Paso Chinay in the #Villaricca National Park. Unfortunately there was still too much snow to take the Paso Chinay. The #tourist info in Pucón advised us to take the Hua Hum Ferry from Puerto Fuy to Hua Hum over the Lago Pirihueico.
And indeed, it was a very nice road to Puerto Fuy, partly paved and partly unpaved. We were in time for the Hua Hum Ferry. It is important because the Hua Hum Ferry sails only once a day in these times. It was a very nice and relaxing sailing of 1,5 hour on the Lago Pirihueico. The weather was fine as well.
From Hua Hum it was only a few minutes to the Chilean-Argentinian border. It was quite at the border. Despite of all the warnings were we in half an hour through both the #Chilean and the #Argentinian borders. On this side of the Lago Pirihueico we only drove on dirt roads. Driving was fun, the flat tire was less #fun…

Walk Around Pucon, Chile
Walk Around Pucon, Chile
Pucon, Chile... World Class Kayaking
Sometimes life throws you a challenge.... Rise to it... I have been disabled for nearly 4 years now following an injury to my right leg. I'm now virtually unable to walk and use crutches to get around.
It's hard for me to find good things that came out of my accident but whitewater kayaking is definitely one of them. When I'm in a kayak, I'm in the same situation as anybody else and am no-longer defined by my disability. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found kayaking.
The two weeks I spent kayaking in Pucon, Chile were genuinely the best two weeks of my life. I paddled some stout waterfalls, including the 70 footer on the Middle Palguin and finished the trip off by paddling against Evan Garcia, in the Palguin extreme whitewater slalom race.
Thank you so much to Meg, Matt, Tony, Andy, James, Lill' James, Jenny, Steve and Kasia for being such an awesome team and for helping me out where my crutches couldn't. A special thank you to Oli for providing me with the motivation not to swim and for carrying my bags halfway across the world in spite of his gnarly splinters.
Thank you also to Pucon Kayak Hostel and Sergio Vidal for guiding, carrying my boat, and occasionally carrying me!
...Keep Kayaking

Pucon, Chile (Hiking the active Villarrica Volcano)
After finishing Patagonia, we didn't quite know how tired we were until arriving in Pucon, Chile. This town was exactly what we needed; a quiet mountain town with good infrastructure,
food, and again very friendly people.
Three days into relaxing and I needed a challenge. The new challenge was to summit the nearby Villarrica Volcano. The video and below cover my best memories of that day.
As we prepare to hike the last fifteen minutes to the top of the mountain, I ask, “Is the mask required”?
The response was, “If the gas is toxic, then use the mask”
To which I ask the obvious question of “When is it toxic”?
“You’ll know”
So I begin the last portion thinking, “Am I going to die from the gas”? Or better yet, will I merely pass out from the gas and fall into the volcano and become a sacrifice to the gods of Villarrica? None of that happens but when we arrive at the top, the smell is harsh. It’s like being at a hot spring but like I’ve never experienced before. The gas mask was great for breathing but my eyes were another story. After walking away from the smoke, clearing my eyes and walking back, I saw liquid magma exploding into the air. These few minutes we had at the top, despite the agonizing gas, were incredible and one of the best experiences on the trip.
That wasn’t all, we still had to descend. The day quickly turned from mountaineering expedition into an adventure park. After we geared up in suits that surely would make me win sexiest man of Pucon, we took our ride down the mountain via butt sliding down a series of ice luges. There was a minimal safety talk but all I heard was we would slide on our butts, brake with an ice axe, and if the speed was great enough then we would eventually stop by running into the person in front of us, brilliant! We had an incredible time and felt like I was five years old at a water park.
