Science and theatre of whale songs | Little Bulb Theatre & Paul White | TEDxSouthamptonUniversity
In this fact filled and frankly funny talk, Professor Paul White and Little Bulb Theatre discuss how they developed a new stage production that showcased the latest science on the songs of the humpback whale.
Little Bulb Theatre is a national touring theatre company based in the South East of England Combining innovative character work, beautiful imagery and exciting homemade music, they aspire to create performances that with humour and sadness will touch, startle and entertain.
Paul White is Professor of Statistical Signal Processing in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton and is currently the Director of that Institute. His research interests include signal processing, underwater acoustics and bioacoustics - the way animals, especially marine mammals such as whales, use sound.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Five lined Skink basking in New Jersey
Five-lined Skink. New Jersey wildlife videography from Morris County.
Five-lined Skinks are the only native lizards in North NJ though they are widespread elsewhere in the US. Their young have vivid blue tails, adult males have bright orange heads, and females remain mostly a bronze color. I find them most often by glacial lakes.
The other wild lizards of New Jersey are the Eastern Fence Lizard and the Ground Skink but neither ranges into Northern New Jersey.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Pantanal (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɐ̃taˈnaw]) is a natural region encompassing the world's largest tropical wetland area. It is located mostly within the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, but it extends into Mato Grosso and portions of Bolivia and Paraguay. It sprawls over an area estimated at between 140,000 and 195,000 square kilometres (54,000 and 75,000 sq mi). Various subregional ecosystems exist, each with distinct hydrological, geological and ecological characteristics; up to 12 of them have been defined (RADAMBRASIL 1982).Roughly 80% of the Pantanal floodplains are submerged during the rainy seasons, nurturing an astonishing biologically diverse collection of aquatic plants and helping to support a dense array of animal species.
The name Pantanal comes from the Portuguese word pântano, meaning wetland, bog, swamp, quagmire or marsh. By comparison, the Brazilian highlands are locally referred to as the planalto, plateau or, literally, high plain.
