Katherine Kiernan Mulgrew, or Kate Mulgrew, was born on April 29, 1955. She grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, being the oldest girl in an Irish Catholic family of 8. When Kate, as a 12-year-old, expressed an interest in acting, her mother, Joan, brought home biographies of great actresses and sent Kate to summer acting schools. At age 17, she left home and traveled to New York City to study acting. At New York University, she was accepted into Stella Adler's Conservatory. At the end of her junior year, she left the university to commit herself full time to her craft. Her early career included portraying Mary Ryan for two years on the ABC soap opera Ryan's Hope (1975) while also playing the role of Emily in the American Shakespeare Theatre production of Our Town in Stratford, Connecticut. When Kate was only 23, she played Kate Columbo in a series created especially for her, Mrs. Columbo (1979). In this series, she was playing the wife of one of television's most beloved detectives, Lt. Columbo. While a critical success, the series was canceled after two seasons.
Kate also starred in several feature films, such as Lovespell (1981), A Stranger Is Watching (1982) with Rip Torn, Remo - Unbewaffnet und gefährlich (1985) and Schmeiß' die Mama aus dem Zug! (1987) with Danny DeVito. In 1981, she traveled to Europe to film the ABC miniseries Die Manions aus Amerika (1981) with Pierce Brosnan. About that time, she married theater director Robert H. Egan and, a few years later, she had two sons: Ian Thomas and Alexander James. In the drama series, Herzschlag des Lebens - Göttinnen in Weiß (1988), Kate played Dr. Joanne Springsteen, the head of a medical clinic. However, in series such as: Murphy Brown (1988), Mord ist ihr Hobby (1984), Chefarzt Dr. Westphall (1982) and Cheers (1982), she only had guest roles.
In 1993, Kate separated from her husband, Robert H. Egan, with whom she had been married for 12 years. In 1995, the divorce became final, and she was on the verge of having to sell her house (and move into an apartment in Westwood) when something incredible happened. She had been called to resume a role in a television series after the original actress, Geneviève Bujold, left two days into filming. What she did not know then was that this role was going to become her most famous one. The role in question was Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek - Raumschiff Voyager (1995). At the moment, she played Katharine Hepburn in the play Tea at Five on some stages in the United States.

The Story Behind America's Fastest-Growing Newspaper
The Epoch Times is quickly becoming a household name across America. Learn about our history and why 'Truth and Tradition' is our motto.

Inside the video:
People are talking about The Epoch Times... “Factual. Honest news. Not biased. Completely straight-forward. Not emotionally going up and down. Bringing morality back to newspapers. Honest, old-fashioned journalism. You’re presenting the facts, and letting the reader decide.”
The Epoch Times is a fearlessly independent news media that publishes in 35 countries and 21 languages.
Truth and Tradition is our motto. Founded as an antidote to communist propaganda, today we’re quickly becoming a household name across America.
Our subscribers thank us for our relentless and unbiased coverage.
Jasper Fakkert, our editor-in-chief says, “I’ve been a part of The Epoch Times for nearly a decade because I’ve seen there’s no other major media outlet in the world as devoted to real journalism. The Epoch Times has never had any corporate or political agenda. We only serve our readers, and we’ll stay that way, no matter what.”
We connected the dots around Spygate, the Obama administration’s elaborate efforts against Trump’s 2016 campaign.
We often break news months ahead of other media on topics such as Chinese espionage, cyberwarfare, subversion in America, and more.
But our authoritative reporting didn’t only just begin. We are tried and true.
Our paper was born out of the need to respond to a human rights catastrophe in China,” says Stephen Gregory, our publisher. It was enabled by the Communist Party’s vicious and dishonest propaganda. We soon learned that Western media were picking up and amplifying the lies. The Epoch Times' truthful reporting exposed the Communist Party’s lies for the Chinese people, but it also helped protect our Western audience. It disabused for them the lies in this propaganda. Our reporting has also helped uncover how communist ideas are taking root in our own country. The Epoch Times started as a small and unknown publication in one of the toughest media markets in the world. We have built it through hard work and trial and error.
We were founded in the year 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia by Chinese-Americans who had fled communist China.
Our independent reporting came at a price. Our staff members in China were jailed and tortured for their reporting, some for as long as 10 years.
Because our founders believed in truthfulness, compassion and tolerance, the principles of the spiritual practice Falun Gong, they felt such sacrifices were worth it to ensure for the world an independent, honest media, one that would report on the most pressing issues of our time.
As many major media are losing people’s trust and declining further every day, the fastest-growing newspaper in America delivers truth and tradition.

Gail Ofrey Daugherty Funeral, Part 1
May 8, 2013
Georgia National Cemetary
Gail O. Daugherty, 85, of Woodstock, GA, and North Myrtle Beach, SC, died on
Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Heritage Hospice in Marietta, Georgia. The cause of death
was complications from pneumonia. Born February 24, 1928, in Philippi (Barbour
County), West Virginia, to Lee and Stella (nee Mackey) Daugherty, he was the third of
five children, all of whom have now passed.
Gail Daugherty was a direct descendant of John W. Daugherty, who was born in Ireland
in 1765 and emigrated to the United States in the late 18th century. Entering America
through Baltimore, he married Elizabeth Byers and settled in Rockingham County, VA.
The next five generations of the family worked mainly as yeomen farmers in Virginia
and then West Virginia. Gail, in the sixth generation, joined the Navy as a teen-ager. He
was sent to Bikini Atoll as a seaman and witnessed the first two nuclear bomb tests at
that site.
Shortly after his discharge from the Navy, Gail Daugherty joined the Coast Guard,
where he made his career, retiring as a noncommissioned chief warrant officer in 1980
after thirty years of service. The core of his career was spent at the helm of icebreakers
on the Great Lakes. His duty posts included Cleveland, Milwaukee, Cape May, NJ,
Marquette and Grand Haven, MI, among others. He served three commands at sea.
Gail Daugherty graduated at the top of his class from the Coast Guard leadership
school in Los Angeles. He always read profusely, favoring English translations of the
classics. On his deathbed he recited from memory, unsolicited, Mark Antony's oration to
Friends, Romans, countrymen from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
Gail Daugherty was buried in Georgia National Cemetery in a Coast Guard service on
May 8, 2013, a United States flag draping his coffin. Kathryn Daugherty of Orlando,
older daughter of Gail's oldest child, Patrick, represented the eighth generation of the
family in America at the military service for her grandfather.
