Bearing Precious Seed Hand-size
A review of the hand-size KJV Bible from Bearing Precious Seed in Milford, Ohio. Here is a link to where you can buy it:
History of England Hume Smollett 1843 rare Exeter NH leather book Williams
(Small pocket-sized 19th century leather bound book- near miniature size and format).
History of England, by John Robinson, D.D.
1843, Exeter, NH, J. & B. Williams. pp. 276; 255. two volumes bound in one. Likely a local NH or Boston binding, perhaps by J. Williams firm.
Original publishers full calf binding, smooth spine gilt ruled into compartments, large central devices and title. Two primitive almost folk-art wood engraved frontis pieces.
Wonderful period leather binding, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Base of front cover leather splitting but board remains firmly attached by binding cords, end papers and leather. Leather remains supple, light surface scuffing, nicer than typical for the type and era.
Pleasing age patina to the item, impossible to recreate and very different from a modern book.
Short video captures condition and appearance much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the book.
Book measures: 5 1/8 H X 3 /4 W.

The Cambridge Cameo with Apocrypha, CD257A
A review of the Cambridge Cameo Standard Reference Bible with Apocrypha, CD257A. ISBN: 0521509467, 9780521509466. This older Cameo has a sewn binding; opaque paper; the words of Christ in black; a Bible dictionary; and gilt (but not art-gilt) page edges. It is printed in a small (8 pt) font in a double-column, verse-by-verse format, with page-ordered references in a center column. The cover is a stiff, black calfskin leather, much less flexible than the calfskin cover on the more recent red letter Cameo with Apocrypha (the KJ455:XRA). It came in an attractive slipcase. In this video, I compare the font in this older Cambridge Cameo with that in the newer Cameo, the Oxford Brevier Clarendon (Allan 6C), and the Oxford Brevier Black-face.

The French Revolution: Crash Course World History #29
In which John Green examines the French Revolution, and gets into how and why it differed from the American Revolution. Was it the serial authoritarian regimes? The guillotine? The Reign of Terror? All of this and more contributed to the French Revolution not being quite as revolutionary as it could have been. France endured multiple constitutions, the heads of heads of state literally rolled, and then they ended up with a megalomaniacal little emperor by the name of Napoleon. But how did all of this change the world, and how did it lead to other, more successful revolutions around the world? Watch this video and find out. Spoiler alert: Marie Antoinette never said, Let them eat cake. Sorry.

More about Heart of Darkness:
Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad. Before its 1903 publication, it appeared as a three-part series (1899) in Blackwood's Magazine. It was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the 100 best novels and part of the Western canon. The story centres on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. He is an Englishman who takes a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a river-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the protagonist, Marlow, encounters: the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the African natives, and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil. Although Conrad does not give the name of the river, at the time of writing the Congo Free State, the location of the large and important Congo River, was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. In the story, Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver. However, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to civilization, in a cover-up. Kurtz has a reputation throughout the region. (Summary adapted from from Wikipedia.org)

HEART OF DARKNESS
By Joseph Conrad
I
The Nellie, a cruising yawl, swung to her anchor without a flutter of
the sails, and was at rest. The flood had made, the wind was nearly
calm, and being bound down the river, the only thing for it was to come
to and wait for the turn of the tide.
The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of
an interminable waterway. In the offing the sea and the sky were welded
together without a joint, and in the luminous space the tanned sails
of the barges drifting up with the tide seemed to stand still in red
clusters of canvas sharply peaked, with gleams of varnished sprits. A
haze rested on the low shores that ran out to sea in vanishing flatness.
The air was dark above Gravesend, and farther back still seemed
condensed into a mournful gloom, brooding motionless over the biggest,
and the greatest, town on earth.
The Director of Companies was our captain and our host. We four
affectionately watched his back as he stood in the bows looking to
seaward. On the whole river there was nothing that looked half so
nautical. He resembled a pilot, which to a seaman is trustworthiness
personified. It was difficult to realize his work was not out there in
the luminous estuary, but behind him, within the brooding gloom.

The Cambridge Interlinear Bible KJV RV in Goatskin
A twenty-three minute tour of the Cambridge Interlinear Bible, which makes it possible to read either the 1885 Revised Version or the 1611 King James Version from the same page. Included also are some examples of where the English Standard Version has reverted to the King James Version readings.
I purchased my copy in 2007: Cambridge replaced this goatskin edition with one bound in calfskin (ISBN 978-1-107-63093-2, 9781107630932). To see how the calfskin book differs from the goatskin edition, take a look at this video: .

Modern Poetry (ENGL 310) with Langdon Hammer
Professor Hammer introduces students to the material that will be covered in the course of the semester. Course readings and requirements are also addressed. Early publications of poems are discussed as they appeared in small magazines such as Blast, Broom, and The Criterion. Book publication of the same poems and other poetry collections are then discussed in contrast. A number of modern English poets are presented such as Eliot, Hughes, Moore, Yeats, and photographs are shown in order to introduce students to the major poets of the early twentieth century.
