I am not certain if it is national forest land, but it is accessible to the public by either foot travel or mountain bike. It is a short hike for a hot day and very pretty. We hiked/creek walked, bushwhacked about 1/2 mile one way. It was not that bad, but there is no good way down to the falls. Take along some rope. I walked in the stream much of the way which was fun and cooling on a 90 degree day. First Day of Summer! June 21, 2015

Visiting Blowing Rock and Hiking Elk River Falls North Carolina
In this weeks video we visit Blowing Rock North Carolina and hike the Elk RIver Falls near Blowing Rock while we were RV camping at Stone Mountain State Park NC. We decided to take a day trip from our Stone Mountain Campground at the suggestion of some friends who live in North Carolina. They suggested a few different hikes that included water falls and we settled on the Elk River Falls trail. It was a little tricky navigating to these falls as our GPS wasn't quite sure where to tell us to turn off the main road. But just followed the signs they had up and found it that way pretty easily.
The Elk River Falls were AMAZING!!! One thing that caught our eye right off the bat was the warnings that were posted about jumping from the falls and how dangerous it is. After doing some research it appears that a lot of injuries and deaths have occurred there while people have jumped from them. Sad....
We then drove into the Hallmark Town of Blowing Rock NC. Alli instantly fell in love with this cute little town. I did enjoy it too, but in my opinion the town of Elkin near where we were staying was just as cute! We love going to the Angry Troll in Elkin as they had great food and really GREAT service the two times we ate there. We loved it so much we actually bought a Angry Troll t-shirt!
We also hiked the Wolf Rock trail at Stone Mountain State Park while there. Didn't make it all the way as we ran out of steam after all the other hiking. All in all this was one great time staying at Stone Mountain NC. We really were truly sad to leave this campground. The last night we were there we laid out on a blanket and just star gazed for a long time. It was the most stars either of us can ever remember seeing!
So if you're in the Stone Mountain NC area, do yourself a favor and either camp here or just go in and do some incredible hiking there!
