Ascension Island views from Western coast in 1984
#AscensionIsland #SouthAtlantic #Island
Tour of Ascension Island taken in 1984 whilst I was working on the Maersk Ascension - which can be seen in parts of the film - anchored in Clarence Bay just over 1 mile off Georgetown, the Capital on the West Coast. Other features which can be seen are - the centre of the island looking towards Two Boats Village; Traveller's Hill; BBC World Service Atlantic Relay Station; US Air Base; RAF Wideawake Airfield; Sisters Mountain; Georgetown; Long Beach; Fort Bedford a two-gun shore battery at Cross Hill, above Georgetown. The battery remains largely intact to this day, together with its guns, BL 5.5 inch Mark I naval guns removed from HMS Hood during a refit in Malta in 1938. A cricket match taking place between the Church and the Exiles Club in Georgetown; Football match taking place on the football pitch near to Long Beach; The world's worst Golf Course which I had the pleasure of playing on - and there weren't greens but browns (smooth sand).
Various ships can be seen at anchor including Maersk Ascension and SS Uganda. Those with a keen eye will notice the Sea Rider heading towards Georgetown from the Maersk Ascension. A couple of Wessex Helicopters from RN 845 Squadron are seen flying near Long Beach.
The Maersk Ascension arrived at Ascension Island in 1983 and remained until 1999 on a MoD charter.
The film was originally filmed using a Super 8mm Cine Camera and digitally converted using a Winait Film Scanner.
Ascension Island is part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha under the sovereignty of the British Crown. The territory is presided over by a Governor, who is resident on St Helena, appointed by HM the Queen. The Governor is represented on Ascension by the Administrator.
Ascension, like the United Kingdom’s other Overseas Territories and the Crown Territories, is not part of the United Kingdom. It has its own Constitution (shared with St Helena and Tristan da Cunha), is internally self-governing, makes its own laws and as a separate fiscal jurisdiction, has tax raising powers through the Governor. The United Kingdom is responsible for defence, international relations and internal security.
Ascension Island lies in the South Atlantic (7 56’S, 14 22’W) 800 miles northwest of the island of Saint Helena and covers an area of 34 square miles. The climate is sub-tropical with temperatures ranging from 20-31°C. Showers occur throughout the year with slightly heavier rains in the January-April period. The island is volcanic, and its lower slopes and western side are made up of volcanic ash with little vegetation. Green Mountain, which rises to a height of 2,818 feet at the centre of the island, is lush and green. Despite its small size there is a lot to do on the island.
There is no indigenous or permanent population. The inhabitants of the island comprise the employees and families of the organisations working on the island.
Ascension Island
Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, around 1,600 kilometres (1,000 mi) from the coast of Africa and 2,250 kilometres (1,400 mi) from the coast of South America, which is roughly midway between the horn of South America and Africa. It is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, of which the main island, Saint Helena, is around 1,300 kilometres (800 mi) to the southeast. The territory also includes the remotest populated archipelago on Earth, the sparsely populated Tristan da Cunha archipelago, some 3,730 kilometres (2,300 mi) to the south (about thirty degrees of latitude) and about halfway to the Antarctic Circle.
The island is named after the day of its recorded discovery, Ascension Day, and is located at 7°56′S 14°22′W, about as far south of the equator as tropical Venezuela is to its north. Historically, it has played a role as an important safe haven and coaling station to mariners and for commercial airliners during the days of international air travel by flying boats and during World War II was an important naval and air station, especially providing antisubmarine warfare bases in the Battle of the Atlantic and throughout the war. Ascension Island was garrisoned by the British Admiralty from 22 October 1815 to 1922.

Apollo In Ascension: a Michael Orrom documentary from 1967
In 1966, Cable & Wireless commissioned British documentary film maker Michael Orrom to make a film about the construction of an earth station on Ascension Island. The earth station was designed to be part of Nasa's historic Apollo moon-shot project, allowing Nasa to communicate with the Apollo spacecraft.
Narrated by actor Julian Glover, shot by David Muir, and edited by R. Q. McNaughton, 'Apollo In Ascension' was premiered in Hong Kong in 28th March, 1967.
The documentary film presented here is a digitalised version of a 16mm copy held in the Cable & Wireless Archive at the Telegraph Museum, in Porthcurno.
For an introduction to the film, please watch our video 'The Making of Apollo In Ascension: a brief introduction to the 1967 Cable & Wireless film'.

Saint Helena ( hə-LEE-nə) is a volcanic tropical island in the South Atlantic Ocean, 4,000 kilometres (2,500 mi) east of Rio de Janeiro and 1,950 kilometres (1,210 mi) west of the Cunene River, which marks the border between Namibia and Angola in southwestern Africa. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Saint Helena measures about 16 by 8 kilometres (10 by 5 mi) and has a population of 4,534 (2016 census). It was named after Saint Helena of Constantinople.
It is one of the most remote islands in the world, and was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. It was an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa for centuries. Napoleon was imprisoned there in exile by the British, as was Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo (for leading a Zulu army against British rule) and more than 5,000 Boers taken prisoner during the Second Boer War, including Piet Cronjé.Saint Helena is Britain's second-oldest overseas territory after Bermuda.

SUMMARY
=======
Anguilla ( ann-GWIL-ə) is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean. It is one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, lying east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and directly north of Saint Martin. The territory consists of the main island of Anguilla, approximately 16 miles (26 km) long by 3 miles (4.8 km) wide at its widest point, together with a number of much smaller islands and cays with no permanent population. The island's capital is The Valley. The total land area of the territory is 35 square miles (91 km2), with a population of approximately 14,764 (2016 estimate).
Anguilla has become a popular tax haven, having no capital gains, estate, profit, sales, or corporate taxes. In April 2011, faced with a mounting deficit, it introduced a 3% Interim Stabilisation Levy, Anguilla's first form of income tax. Anguilla also has a 0.75% property tax.
Banknotes of the pound sterling
Sterling banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the British Islands (encompassing the United Kingdom and the British Crown dependencies), denominated in pounds sterling (symbol: £; ISO 4217 currency code GBP). One pound is equivalent to 100 pence.
The pound is the official currency of the United Kingdom and the Crown dependencies of Britain. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.

SUMMARY
=======
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people can face violence motivated by hateful attitudes towards their sexuality or gender identity. Violence may be executed by the state, as in laws prescribing corporal punishment for homosexual acts (see homosexuality laws), or by individuals engaging in intimidation, mobbing, assault, or lynching (see gay bashing, trans bashing). Violence targeted at people because of their perceived sexuality can be psychological or physical and can extend to murder. These actions may be motivated by homophobia, lesbophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and may be influenced by cultural, religious, or political mores and biases.Currently, homosexual acts are legal in almost all Western countries, and in many of these countries violence against LGBT people is classified as a hate crime, with such violence often being connected with conservative or religious leaning ideologies which condemn homosexuality, or being perpetrated by individuals who associate homosexuality with being weak, ill, feminine, or immoral. Outside the West, many countries, particularly those where the dominant religion is Islam, most African countries (excluding South Africa), most Asian countries (excluding the LGBT-friendly countries of Israel, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines) and some former-Communist countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, such as Russia, Poland, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, are currently very dangerous for LGBT people because of discrimination against homosexuals which influences both discriminatory legislation and physical violence.In Europe, the European Union's Employment Equality Framework Directive and Charter of Fundamental Rights offer some protection against sexuality-based discrimination.
Historically, state-sanctioned persecution of homosexuals was mostly limited to male homosexuality, termed sodomy. During the medieval and early modern period, the penalty for sodomy was usually death. During the modern period (from the 19th century to the mid-20th century) in the Western world, the penalty was usually a fine or imprisonment.
There was a drop in locations where homosexual acts remained illegal from 2009 when there were 80 countries worldwide (notably throughout the Middle East, Central Asia and in most of Africa, but also in some of the Caribbean and Oceania) with five carrying the death penalty to 2016 when 72 countries criminalized consensual sexual acts between adults of the same sex.
Brazil is reported to have the world's highest LGBT murder rate, with more than 380 murders in 2017 alone, an increase of 30% compared to 2016.
