Brief Background Information
At Bear Mountain State Park hiking the world famous Appalachian trail, visiting the zoo and bird sanctuary, going ice skating; and noshing and swilling at Oktoberfest are just a handful of things to do.
Escape the city as a day trip, or stay a little longer. The Bear Mountain Inn, Overlook Lodge, and Stone Cottages are perfect accommodations for a romantic weekend, family retreat, or destination wedding.
Bear Mountain rises 1,293 feet (394 m) west of the Hudson River, mostly in Orange County New York. But the park itself stretches into Rockland county and contains other Hudson Highlands peaks such as Dunderberg and West Mountain.
Together with Harriman State Park, and the Palisades Interstate Park system, the area amounts to one of the largest contiguous wildernesses in New York State.
The area was once privately owned by railroad tycoon Edward H. Harriman.
After his death in 1909, his wife Mary donated 10,000 acres of the family property and $1M to New York State to establish the parklands.
Civil Engineers, George W. Perkins and William A. Welch built much of the infrastructure in and around the Hudson Highlands. They later expanded the parkland to 40,000 acres, getting financial help from JP Morgan and the Rockefellers.
Since opening in the early 1900s, it's been a favorite weekend retreat for millions of urban New Yorkers (45 miles away from Midtown Manhattan) and people from all over the North Eastern United States.

Loop Hike in Harriman State Park, NY
Seven of the RoughNex from three different states meet at a trailhead in Harriman State Park on a Friday night....
This hike was a beautiful example of what New York State has to offer. We went over Catamount Mountain and had a stunning view at night of Hawk Cliff and eventually stayed at Stone Memorial Shelter for the first night. We woke up and hiked towards Big Hill Shelter on the second day seeing and experiencing nature's best.

Riding on Seven Lakes Drive, Harriman State Park, One of Best Scenic Drive close to NYC
Seven lakes drive is one of most beautiful fall road in New York metropolitan area.
About Seven Lakes Dr.
Seven Lakes Drive is a north–south parkway located in the Hudson Valley region of New York in the United States. It extends for just under 18 miles (29 km) on a northeast–southwest alignment from an intersection with New York State Route 17 (NY 17) in the village of Sloatsburg to a junction with U.S. Route 9W (US 9W) and US 202 south of the Bear Mountain Bridge in the town of Stony Point. Most of the highway is located in either Harriman or Bear Mountain state parks, save for a small stretch near its western end. Ownership of Seven Lakes Drive is split between three entities, two of which are also responsible for maintenance of the road.
About Harriman State Park (New York)
At 47,527 acres (192.33 km2),[1] Harriman State Park is the second largest state park in New York State.[2] Located in Rockland and Orange counties 30 miles (48 km) north of New York City, it is a haven for hikers with over 200 miles (320 km) of hiking trails. The park is also known for its 31 lakes, multiple streams, public camping area, and great vistas. The park's hiking trails are currently maintained by volunteers from the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference.
On its northeastern edge, Harriman State Park borders the 5,000-acre (20 km2) Bear Mountain State Park as well as the United States Military Academy's 16,000-acre (65 km2) forest reserve. To the southwest, it partly borders the state-owned 18,000-acre (73 km2) Sterling Forest reserve. These areas, together with the state's Storm King forest reserve of 1,900 acres (7.7 km2), amount to contiguous protected forests that are substantially larger than Harriman alone.
