Hereford Inlet Lighthouse
This was my home base during the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ 2017. My great grandfather was Keeper here as was his second wife hence I feel especially connected. The Challenge encourages folks to visit and climb if they wish 11 working lighthouses and 3 life saving stations across New Jersey - from Sandy Hook to Cape May then up the Delaware. The event this year occurred Oct 21-22 and was the first I attended. And another first - the largest turnout the event has experienced. I met so many dedicated souls ensuring that our lighthouse heritage remains alive and well. Their dedication, effort, sacrifices and desire to provide an authentic experience all contribute to this unique event. In just four minutes, I've tried to capture a small taste for your cerebral enjoyment.

Hereford Inlet Light Celebrated
Hereford Inlet Light Celebrated
Many residents and guests attended National Lighthouse Day Aug. 7 at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood.
Constructed in 1874, Hereford Light is the oldest building in the Wildwoods, according to City Clerk Scott Jett who grew up in North Wildwood.
Mayor Patrick Rosenello thanked Jett for his efforts, commenting on Jett's passion for Hereford Lighthouse. Rosenello also reflected on the partnership with federal, state, and local officials in the care and maintenance of the lighthouse.
Due to the lighthouse's aid to navigation, the Hereford Light remains a relevant focal point for North Wildwood. However, on May 11, the light's rotating beam malfunctioned. A temporary beam shone until July 19 when a new beam was installed by U.S. Coast Guard.
According to Jett, the Coast Guard expedited the process and installed the beacon at no cost to the city.
Residents will see the familiar, flashing light as Jett did as a boy. The old light from 1964 is on display inside the lighthouse.

Hereford Light Marks First Year under NW Care
On the anniversary of the conflict between the Friends of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse and the City of North Wildwood, the Herald asked City Clerk Scott Jett, who also serves as city historian and Historical Commission chairman, how affairs stood at Hereford Light.
According to Jett, volunteers said they saw the biggest turn out they could remember during the summer months as tourists explored the lighthouse and grounds.
Two full-time employees and one part-time employee staffed the lighthouse. Volunteers staff the lighthouse during the shoulder season.
Expenses are paid for through the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse Trust Fund, approved by the state.
According to official accounts, $17,000 remains in the fund. Funds are raised by donations and other fundraising activities. The total income for Hereford Light was $22,000.
The seven-member Historical Commission dropped the $5 admission fee so families could visit the grounds and historical displays for free.
The grounds are maintained by the city's Buildings, Parks, and Grounds Department. According to Jett, comments on the grounds’ conditions have been good in 2018.
The iconic Japanese black pine trees still line the perimeter and cannot be cut down, as feared, without approval of the Department of Environmental Protection.
The lighthouse and grounds belong to the State of New Jersey and are leased directly to the city. Jett said the city's goal is to preserve its history for future generations.
Cape May Lighthouse
Located in Cape May Point State Park, the tower is the third documented lighthouse at the southern tip of New Jersey. A visit to this lighthouse has become a requisite feature for Cape May summer visitors.

Amazing Ocean Views Location is everything and timing is a close second. This home is situated with very big views of Hereford inlet and the ocean. The home is being sold strictly as-is and would be perfect for a handyman or contractor to build their dream. There is a newer 2 car gagrage on the property to use during renovations as a work area or storage. Homes this close to the Ocean with beautiful water views don't come up for sale that often so here is your chance.

San Pedro, California - Point Fermin Lighthouse HD (2014)
The lighthouse was built in 1874 and designed by Paul J. Pelz, who also designed Point Fermin's sister stations, East Brother Island Light in Richmond, California, Mare Island Light, in Carquinez Strait, California (demolished in the 1930s), Point Hueneme Light in California (replaced in 1940), Hereford Inlet Light in North Wildwood, New Jersey, and Point Adams Light in Washington State (burned down by the Lighthouse Service in 1912), all in essentially the same style. The original fourth order Fresnel lens was removed in 1942 and a wood replica lantern was installed in 1974. The lighthouse was saved from demolition in 1972 and refurbished in 1974, and a new lantern room and gallery were built by local preservationists. In 1972, the light was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Historical Information from Coast Guard web site:
Point Fermin Light was built in 1874 with lumber from California redwoods.
In 1941 the light was extinguished due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There was fear that the light would serve as a beacon for enemy planes and ships. Later, the lantern room and gallery were removed. They were replaced by a lookout shack that remained for the next 30 years, and was referred to as the chicken coop by locals.
In 1972 the light was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The light fell into disuse and disrepair. A new lantern room and gallery were built in 1974.
The building has now been restored to its original state and is open to the public as the Point Fermin Lighthouse Historic Site and Museum.
The original Fresnel lens from the lighthouse, removed in the 1940s, had been missing for decades. After being found and positively identified, on November 13, 2006 the lens was relocated to a display in the restored lighthouse museum from the real estate office of Louis Busch in Malibu, California where it had been on display.
The lighthouse is open daily except Monday and holidays.
In June 2011, the General Services Administration made the Point Fermin Light (along with 11 others) available at no cost to public organizations willing to preserve them.
