Union Pacific Big Boy #4014: The Great Race Across East Texas
On Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 10, 2019, we embarked on a big 2 day chase that was over 200 miles long. On both days we chased the legendary locomotive himself, the Union Pacific Big Boy #4014. On Day 1, we chased 4014 with Union Pacific SD70ace #4141 (also known as the George Bush engine or the George Bush Funeral Train) from Hearne to Palestine, Texas. On Day 2, 4141 was uncoupled from 4014 in Palestine. We chased it from Neches to Marshall, Texas. On Day 1, we chased what would be known as one of the final runs of 4141 before it'll be on static display in a museum in College Station. We seen 4014 already in Illinois and Iowa but we wasn’t able to get a whole of shots but we got a lot more shots this time!
4014 is a 4884-1 Big Boy type steam locomotive built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company and has a configuration of 4-8-8-4. 4014 and 24 other Big Boys was built for the Union Pacific Railroad to climb steep grades in the mountains of Wyoming and Utah. Orginally the Big Boys were going to be called Wasatch (a mountain range in Utah) but an unknown worker wrote in chalk Big Boy on the smokebox of the first ever Big Boy (#4000). 4014 and the other Big Boys were retired by 1959 and only 8 survived and 4014 is one of the 8. In 1961 4014 was brought to the RailGiants Train Museum in Pomona, California and sat on display there until 2013. In 2012, Union Pacific announced that they will be restoring a Big Boy to operation and chose 4014 because of the California climate. In 2014, 4014 was brought to its new home in Cheyenne, Wyoming where it where will be restored at and operated at. They began work in 2016 and finished right before the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad and just in time pull the excursion for it in May 2019 with Union Pacific FEF-3 Northern #844. From July 8 to August 8, it does a tour across the Midwest. And from September 27 to November 26, 4014 went on a long Southwest tour (the excursion on this video). In May 2019, 4014 would become the largest operating steam locomotive in the world and the largest surviving steam locomotive class in existence.
Join us while we were part of another adventure with one of our favorite steam locomotives of all time during its run through the Southwest. It truly was a dream come true to see 4014 come through our neck of the woods and hopefully it'll come through here again. I hope y'all enjoy!
If you want more information about 4014 please make sure to check their website.

The Ranch Life
Ranching and the west go hand in hand. You really can’t have one without the other. It is a tradition and heritage that has continued throughout the West, passed on from generation to generation. Here at the national cowboy and western heritage museum in Oklahoma city you can see ranching’s origins from when the Spanish first brought cattle here in the early 1500’s today’s modern day ranching operation, but what is ranch life really all about. We head to a small ranch in New Mexico to find out.

Places to see in ( Dallas - USA )
Places to see in ( Dallas - USA )
Dallas, a modern metropolis in north Texas, is a commercial and cultural hub of the region. Downtown’s Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza commemorates the site of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. In the Arts District, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Crow Collection of Asian Art cover thousands of years of art. The sleek Nasher Sculpture Center showcases contemporary sculpture.
Dallas is the largest and most populated city in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, which is also referred to as DFW, North Texas, or The Metroplex. Located in the north central portion of the state, The Metroplex is the most populated area in Texas. The City of Dallas by itself is the third most populated in the state behind Houston and San Antonio. DFW is home to the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, and you'll regularly be reminded of The Metroplex's mass enthusiasm for the team. With more shopping centers per capita than any other city in the US, Dallas is also known as a shopper's paradise.
Dallas is Texas' most mythical city, with a past and present rich in the stuff that American legends are made of. The 'Big D' is famous for its contributions to popular culture – notably the Cowboys and their cheerleaders, and Dallas, the TV series that once was a worldwide symbol of the USA. An upscale ethos makes for a vaunted dining and shopping scene, where the more conspicuous your consumption, the better.

American Cowboy Gallery
The American Cowboy Gallery, comprising 8,000 square feet, interprets the cowboy’s history and culture from Spanish colonial times to the 20th century. The gallery represents the most extensive exhibition on the working cowboy in the United States. Within the environment of a rough-hewn ranch building, in-depth presentations reveal how various elements of equipment, such as saddles, bits, and spurs, changed over time. Regional styles of equipment are discussed and displayed. Visitors believe this is a “mecca” for those interested in the real history of the “cowpuncher” and his authentic clothing and equipment.

Jeffrey Gibson: This Is the Day
Jeffrey Gibson: This Is the Day
Curated by Johnson-Pote Director Tracy L. Adler
Videoography by Brett Novak
Jeffrey Gibson’s multidisciplinary practice encompasses a wide range of mediums and draws on a variety of influences and visual languages to comment on race, sexuality, religion, and gender, among other topical issues. Combining popular and queer culture with references to Native American history and current events, Gibson reflects on his Choctaw and Cherokee heritage as a means of exploring the significance, traditions, and rituals of personal adornment and identity.
This Is the Day features a series of embellished garments and helmets created for the exhibition that probe the layers of meaning and potential power presented through the ritual of dress. Also debuting is the video I Was Here, an original time-based work commissioned by the Wellin Museum that investigates the intersections between community and individuality, gender and identity, and notions of performance and ritual. These new pieces are presented alongside a large selection of works created between 2014 and 2018, demonstrating the depth and breadth of Gibson’s oeuvre. Often combining beadwork, fringe, and jingles associated with Native American powwow rituals with lyrics from hit songs from the 1980s and 1990s—such as “dearly beloved” and “hold me now”—Gibson blends a multitude of materials and references in an eclectic and celebratory mash-up.
Although his mediums and inspirations are diverse, Gibson notes that all his work originates with painting. The layering of color and glazes, the crisp low-relief lines defining geometric shapes, the synergy between form and internal color relationships—all work together to create a kind of legend for understanding Gibson’s work as a whole. Emanating from his painting practice are the impressionistic ceramics that reference prehistoric Mississippian head pots; the embellished punching bags, robes, tapestries, figures, and panels that riff on powwow attire; the weavings with their tensile fringe and layered color effects that nod to the tradition of non-objective painting; the garments and helmets that escalate the notion of adornment; and the video I Was Here, which brings documentary and magical realism together in an expansion of the artist’s work in the medium. Combining disparate influences and sensibilities, Gibson invites us to share in the hope and possibility that the differences that define us can also unite us.
Jeffrey Gibson (b. Colorado Springs, 1972) grew up in major urban centers across the United States, Germany, Korea, and England. He received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995, and an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art in London in 1998. His work has been featured in solo museum exhibitions at the National Academy Museum (2013), the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center (2017), and the Denver Art Museum (2018). Recent group shows include Prospect.3: Notes for Now in New Orleans (2015), Greater New York at MoMA PS1 (2016), and Desert X in Palm Springs (2017). Gibson is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant and the Creative Capital Foundation Grant. He is an artist-in-residence at Bard College and lives and works in Germantown, New York.
This exhibition was organized by the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art and will travel to the Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin, where it will be on view July 14 – September 29, 2019.
The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art’s programs are made possible, in part, with funds from the Daniel W. Dietrich ’64 Arts Museum Programming Fund; the Johnson-Pote Museum Director Fund; the John B. Root ’44 Exhibition Fund; the Edward W. and Grace C. Root Endowment Fund; the William G. Roehrick ’34 Lecture Fund; and private contributions.
Anchorage, Alaska
Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 570,374 square miles, over twice the size of Texas
Mount McKinley, or Denali The High One is the highest mountain in the United States and North America with an elevation of 20,320 feet.
Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with over 291,000 residents. At 61 degrees north is it slightly more northern than Oslo and Stockholm.
Because of the northern latitude, in the summer the days are very long although the temperatures rarely rise above the 70s. But that doesn't stop Alaska's residents from shedding their parkas for shorts the moment the sun appears.
Oscar Anderson was an early Anchorage resident, said to be the 18th person to set foot on the area and his house, built in 1915 was the first wood-frame house in Anchorage.
The Glacier Brewhouse is both a brewery and one of Anchorage's top restaurants. The place gets busy early so it is a good idea to make reservations. Aside from rotisserie meats the menu features lots of fresh local seafood. And who ever had fresh raspberry whet beer? The brewhouse was brewing it and it was delicious. Alaska glacier bottled water is a great way to taste the purity of the environment around Anchorage. This bottled water is a popular drink for Asians who visit and refer glaciers. Although there were rave reviews about the seafood chowder and the calamari, I tried the pita with hummus which was a great appetizer that went well with the raspberry wheat beer.
One can't be in Alaska without tasting king crab legs. The fresh version is more spectacular than the deep freeze version we get in the lower 48. Alaskan halibut also shines over their southern neighbors and at Glacier Brewhouse they serve it with a healthy balsamic salad and a not so healthy side of fries.
A popular street food are reindeer hot dogs which are actually a blend of pork sausage and reindeer. I didn't taste it but I understand it is a must try, unless you are Santa Claus. There are lots of tourist shops selling made in China souvenirs but if you want something that is truly Alaskan and unique, The Oomingmak Qiviut shop is an Alaskan native cooperative that produces Muskox products.
It is owned by approximately 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages of Alaska who knit each item by hand. Each village has a signature pattern derived from traditional aspects of village life and the Eskimo culture; they may come from an ancient artifact or a beadwork design.
The name Musk Ox is deceiving, as the animal does not produce musk, nor is it related to cattle. Skeletal and behavioral studies show a closer relationship to sheep and goats Qiviut is shed naturally each year during the spring months.
About 40 miles south of Anchorage is the Alyeska ski resort -- even in May there is abundant snow -- although skiers were not about. It has an average of 643 of annual snowfall and is known for its steep terrain. For off piste skiing - Chugach Powder Guides operate snowcat or helicopter adventure in the world-famous Chugach Mountain Range. Helicopters guarantee 16 - 20,000 vertical feet of skiing per day. The cost $1125 per person. If that price is unbearable ... the normal day ski lift pass is $60 for an adult.
Not far from Alyeska is Portage and the home of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The center takes in injured and orphaned animals and many who cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center.
Snickers, the porcupine is one such creature that was raised in a home and has a lot of personality .. so much so that a youtube video featuring him with almost 1.8 million views. (youtube.com/watch?v=U5I5H7EeC8k)
The center had recently taken in three orphaned moose calves who keep the four-year old moose Jack company. Jack had arrived at the center as a 3-day old moose with bite marks and a broken leg .. and a 20% chance of survival.
Muskox who's warm fur is used in making Qiviut products are an arctic survivor. Their thick coat grows up to 36 inches long.
The wood bison were extinct from Alaska until they were reintroduced in 2003. They are the largest land animal in North America.
Bears are also residents at the center including brown bears, black bears and a grizzly bear.
Heading south toward the coastal town of Whittier brings one to the Whittier tunnel. This is the longest combined railroad car tunnel in North America and connects the commuters between the Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. The tunnel opened in 1943.
Whittier is home to lots of sea life from birds, to sea otters, seals, whales, and sea lions.
In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake (the largest ever recorded in North America)
generated a major tectonic tsunami. The waves destroyed Girdwood and Portage and evidence of the damage today is still visible from the dead wood forests in the area.

Battleship Texas State Historic Site (in La Porte, TX)
The Texas was in service from 1914 to 1948 and became a museum ship soon thereafter. It is one of the few US Navy ships that served in both World Wars. The ship is convenient to Houston and visiting provides a good perspective of how battleships operated and crew life.
UP Big Boy 4014 Visits Southern New Mexico
In late October, Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive 4014 made a visit to Southern New Mexico as part of it's Great Race Across The Southwest Tour. In this video we chase the locomotive from a location called Gary (West of Lordsburg) to Lordsburg on October 19. The next day we chased the engine from Lordsburg to El Paso, Texas. Highlights include great morning sun, a meet, and the former Southern Pacific bridge in El Paso.
Union Pacific 4014 is a 4-8-8-4 class Big Boy built by Alco (American Locomotive Company) in 1941. It pulled fast freight trains over the mountains of Utah and Wyoming. It was retired in 1959 and placed on display at the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, CA in 1961. In 2013 the engine was reaquired by UP to be restored to operation. In 2014 the engines left the museum grounds and headed for the UP steam shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming for restoration. In 2019 the engine was brought back to steam and in May the engines went on it's first excursion trip with Up 4-8-4 #844, known as the Great Race to Ogden, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. In July and August of 2019, 4014 went on the Great Race Across The Midwest tour, and visited states such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota. In September 2019 the engine started its Southwest tour mentioned earlier, passing through the states of Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. At the time of this upload, 4014 is in Colorado, and the tour is due to be finished on November 27, when the engine will be in storage until 2020.

Big Boy 4014 Rolls Through Northeast Kansas!
I was able to have the once in a lifetime experience of seeing the Union Pacific's 4014 Big Boy train as it travels across the country in the celebration of 150 years of the trans-continental railroad being completed. The train rolled right through my hometown and stopped at a nearby town (Manhattan Kansas). I am so glad I was able to capture this once in a lifetime experience and share it with you all! The train will continue its journey across the United States with its final destination in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
