Pietre paesina Susan Rudolf intern at I mosaici di Lastrucci Florence 2018
For the geologist and the scientist is Paesina stone a variety of Alberese limestone which can be found in all the Northern Apennine mountain areas of Italy. It is the most singular example of pictorial stone in the limestone family. Because of the depictions it is able to conjure up and because of its specific origin, it is also called: landscape stone, ruin stone, ruiniform limestone or marble, and Florentine marble.
It is a sedimentary stone mainly made of compressed limestone and clay formed in sea beds about 50 million years ago (Eocene-Paleocene epoch).
The drawings and colours that seem made by a talented painter, are instead absolutely natural; they are produced by the millenary work of mineralized infiltrations in hydroxides of Iron and Manganese.
The origin of its pictorial features is, however, still a matter of debate. According to some scholars these infiltrations gave rise to the chromatic variations, but only subsequent mechanical interaction determined micro-fractures resulting in layer slides that created the final ruiniform aspect. According to others, these micro fractures, composed of spathic calcite, were already present in the limestone and determined the geometric design which affected the infiltration penetration.

Perché Teatro in Bottega?
Teatro in Bottega a Firenze : Commesso Viaggiatore C.V 0.2 Firenze
Restoration of Santa Reparata church floor, Florence Cathedral
An extraordinary testament to ancient Florentia has been restored to its former glory thanks to a painstaking restoration project. The multicoloured mosaic floor of the Church of Santa Reparata in Florence Cathedral dates to the early Christian era and displays a magnificent peacock, a Christian symbol of the resurrection, and an epigraph with the names of 14 donors of the mosaic. The restoration took 18 months to complete and was conducted by restorers of Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, the institution that promotes and maintains the heritage of Florence Cathedral.

Bruno and Iacopo Lastrucci, Florentine Mosaic
At first glance, the masterpieces that come out of the workshop of Bruno & Iacopo Lastrucci might seem like paintings, but these works are made entirely out of inlaid stone. The technique known as pietre dure dates back to Renaissance Florence, when the Medici princes commissioned highly-skilled artisans to produce gorgeous inlaid furniture and objects to adorn their palaces and impress foreign dignitaries. Amazingly, there are still a handful of artisans that use the same 500 year-old techniques. Each richly colored stone is finely cut and filed to fit together seamlessly.
Bruno, 70, has been a mosaic artisan since he was a boy. What keeps him going strong? After all these years, I still feel like an apprentice, he says, like I still have a lot to learn, and maybe this is what keeps me fresh. His son, Iacopo, never imagined he would achieve the level of his father, a maestro, but decades of hard work have proven otherwise. In his spare time, Iacopo loves to go hunting for stones, many of which can be found in the hills and valleys of the Tuscan countryside. The Lastrucci mosaics can be found in museums and private art collections all over the world.
