Icy Strait Point is a privately owned tourist destination just outside the small village of Hoonah, Alaska. It is located on Chichagof Island and is named after the nearby Icy Strait. Owned by Huna Totem Corporation, it is the only privately owned cruise destination in Alaska, as most stops are owned by the cities in which they are located. Huna Totem Corporation is owned by approximately 1,350 Alaskan Natives with aboriginal ties to Hoonah and the Glacier Bay area. Many of them are of the Tlingit people.
Location: 108 Cannery Road, Hoonah, Alaska
Description Icy Strait Point
=====================
The corporation's goal was to preserve the character of the local village and culture as much as possible, despite the influx of visitors, while still providing substantial help to local economic prospects. They have won several awards for doing this, including in 2008 a Travel to a Better World Award from National Geographic Traveler magazine, in 2012 a Global Vision Award from Travel + Leisure magazine, and in 2013 a finalist World Savers Award from Condé Nast Traveler magazine.
The site includes the 1930s Hoonah Packing Company facility, now converted into a museum, restaurant, and shops. In the view of two travel books, the cannery at the site has been beautifully restored. At the dock, traditionally garbed presenters offer a look at Huna Tlingit culture, and an indoor theatrical production along the same lines is also offered. All shops located there are owned by Alaskans. Alaska's Wildest Kitchen shows visitors the importance of salmon and subsistence fishing in the Tlingit culture and features a culinary instruction space where local residents demonstrate how to fillet salmon and halibut and turn them into burgers, spreads, casseroles, and grilled entrees. The local town of Hoonah is a mile's walk, and reveals contemporary Tlingit life. A 2014 USA Today article described the chance to experience Alaska Native culture in small villages such as Hoonah one of the ten reasons to visit the state.
For the most part, however, Icy Strait Point is a jumping-off point for shore excursions for the cruise passengers. The most well-known of these is the ZipRider zip-line that completes its run near the facility, which was constructed by the Huna Totem Corporation. Opening in May 2007, it measures 5,330 feet (1,620 m) and made claims to being the longest in the world, or later to at least being one of the longest and highest – at 1,330 feet (410 m) – in North America. It has been rated a statewide must do attraction by the Anchorage Daily News. The zip-line was also featured in September 2013 on Travel Channel's Ride-iculous show.
Another popular excursion is to search for coastal brown bears on the nearby Spasski River, where sightings happen but are not guaranteed. Other wildlife, such as bald eagles, are frequently seen in the area. Whale watching excursions are also conducted, as the facility is near the Point Adolphus feeding area for humpback whales. By 2011, attractions at and around Icy Strait Point had reached the level where they were getting non-cruise visitors as well.

Icy Strait Point Tour via Alaska Cruise (4K)
Take a tour of Icy Strait Point in Honnah Alaksa. We visited during our Alaska cruise in June of 2017. In this video you will see the walkway that goes from the pier to Icy Strait Point Adventure Center. It is not a long walk at around 10 minutes, but not short either, and if you need help there is a cart that will help transport you to and fro.
The Adventure Center has a coffee shop, restrooms and tour desks where you can book activities. There is a restaurant called Duck Point Smokehouse right outside. Behind the Adventure Center you can observe those coming down on the Icy Strait Point Zipline (costs ~$149). We were told that it takes about 45 minutes for a bus to haul guests up the hill where they would take the ziprider down.
You can then take a scenic 10 minute walk to the Icy Strait Point/former cannery. Inside were exhibits from the former Hoonah cannery. We were a bit surprised at the shop located right in the middle of the museum, however, which made it seem a bit too commercialized.
There were other restaurants there such as The Cookhouse which offered Reindeer Sausage, and the Crab Station that sold Port Frederick Sound Dungeness Crab. We were actually looking forward to trying the Dungeness Crab but were told that the crabs wouldn't come in for another week.
The favorite thing we did there was the Nature Trail- a tranquil 20 minute stroll through a real Alaskan forest that takes you from the beach near the pier back to the Adventure Center compound.
Overall Icy Strait Point was an enjoyable port. The beauty of nature with plenty of comfortable facilities for guests, along with a range of excursions/activities available including the popular zipline ride. We did wish that we had more time at the port as the all-aboard time was 1:30 PM.

Claims to be the largest Ziprider in the world. Vertical drop higher than the Empire State Building. 45 minute bus ride up the mountain, 90 seconds zipline down! Shore excursion from Icy Strait Point, Hoonah off the Celebrity Millennium cruise of the Inside Passage up the SE coast of Alaska.
Alaska 2016: Icy Strait Point May 30
Hoonah town with 760 residents. This felt like the real Alaska. Our excursion was with a local couple who has a small beautiful boat that carries six. The wife picked us up and drove us through town struggling to make the town interesting; after what seemed like ten minutes we were at the marina for the boat ride. The goal was to find whales as this area seems to be most attractive to them. We found otters, sea lions and whales; we have more otters and sea lions in our area than we saw, however. We captured several tails of whales, one of them pretty close to our boat as you can see in the video; however none breached. Meeting this charming couple and learning about them and their business was a very rewarding portion of this excursion.

Whale Watching in ALASKA
Whale watching in Alaska was awesome! We went on a ship with Major Marine Tours and saw a humpback whale when they said they were most likely all gone this year. Saw some of the amazing Kenai Fjords National Park as well! Boat was a bit bumpy, but worth it.
P.S. I had no service to update yesterday :/

Ridin' the ZipRider at Icy Strait Point (Hoonah, AK), 2017
At the tiny town of Hoonah, Alaska (full-time pop. 760, mostly Tlingit), Icy Strait Point is the new economic driver. Fishing had its time. Forestry did, too. But as those industries waned, tourism took over. The Huna Totem Corporation, owned by about 1,350 Alaska aboriginals, is one of a dozen official Native corporations formed under a state claims settlement act. Since 2004, the Huna Totem Corporation has run Icy Strait Point, essentially a tourist stop for cruise ship passengers. Now, more than 1 million people have been to Hoonah.
When Joy and I were there five years ago, our ship had to anchor out and we had to go ashore on a lifeboat, or tender. We pulled up at the old cannery dock, walked through a museum and enjoyed the ZipRider (more about that in a moment).
But a few years later, the Huna Totem Corporation and the Town of Hoonah teamed up to build a dedicated cruise ship dock — pilings, concrete floats, massive bumpers, a walkway/ramp that supports forklifts and small shuttle carts. It's a huge improvement for accessibility.
