KL's Pudu Glutton Lane Food Discovery #6 : Old-style Hakka mee lives on in KL’s Pudu !
The Hakka clans in KL’s off Jalan Pudu will surely know this place. It’s not only famous for its original-styles Hakka mee but also for the fact that it has been around since 1931! Indeed , this makes it a historical landmark ! Tai Bu mee or Hakka mee here is served not in plastic bowls but in old-style ceramic bowls . And this decades old shop is now operated by two brothers from 6am till late. In fact many drop by here for a late nite bowl of mee as supper! Tai Bu Mee is the shop name along Jalan Pudu at a corner side street and has been well recommended by the media as well as listed as one of the “10 hidden gems in Pudu you must try “ by OpenRice Malaysia. Besides the home-made Hakka mee you can try their famous “lou see fun” or mouse tail noodles too. Take a trip down 1950s at this unique noodle shop right in KL’s Pudu !

KL's Pudu Glutton Lane Food Discovery #8 : A Yong Tau Foo Hideout In KL’s Pudu
The first thing you would notice about this yong tau foo stall along KL’s off Jalan Pudu is certainly the variety of selections ranging from chilli, brinjal, bitter gout, lady’s finger to dried tau foo. Besides that this stall also serves pan mee that is made on- the- spot using an antique looking kneading machine. This stall is operated by the two ladies. For yong tau foo fans this stall will not disappoint, definitely. Folks from as far as Kepong have ventured here to taste the authentic difference ! The video shows how the stuffings are fried and noticed a dried oyster is added into it to give its unique taste. There is an air of home coked food here. Surely, because the servings are all freshly made and cooked right there ! And the ladies are always happy to welcome you to their kitchen !

Teh Tarik
Bahan Resep Teh Tarik :
Sediakan 200 ml air mendidih
Sediakan 2 kantong teh hitam aroma melati
Sediakan 50 ml susu evaporasi
Sediakan 3 sdm susu kental manis
Alat Resep Teh Tarik :
2 buah gelas bergagang ukuran besar (lebih baik berbahan plastik, stainless steel, atau kaleng, bukan berbahan beling)
Cara Membuat Resep Teh Tarik :

- Setelah adonan direndam, pipihkan hingga benar-benar tipis, lalu oleskan mentega hingga merata.

Jalan Sayur: The Glutton Street Night Market in Pudu
As far as tourists are concerned, the most popular and famous place for street food in Kuala Lumpur is Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang. Jalan Alor is a fun street and well worth a visit. However, because its audience is mostly foreigners, its food primarily is seasoned for the taste preferences of mainland Chinese tourists rather than locals.
For local Chinese-Malay people, one of the best known places for street food is Jalan Sayur in Pudu. Commonly referred to as Wai Sek Kai (為食街) in Cantonese — which often is embellished in its English translation to Glutton Street — this grimy night market has changed little in decades and is considered widely to maintain more traditional Cantonese and Peranakan flavours.
Jalan Sayur is the kind of street that a foodie tourist, particularly an Asian foodie tourist, might make an effort to visit, but it had minimal presence on the big tourist advisory sites under any of its names — Jalan Sayur, Wai Sek Kai, or Glutton Street — at the time that travelgasm.com first wrote this piece. The vast majority of tourists in Kuala Lumpur never make it to Jalan Sayur, and we think it is a worthy addition to our 7 Things Tourists Don't Do in Kuala Lumpur, but You Should accordingly.
Best Pudu Glutton Street Night Market Eateries
On our first visit to Jalan Sayur, we showed up around 5 PM, but this was too early and most vendors were not open yet. We had better luck on subsequent visits around 6 PM and 7 PM. In our experience, the area around the Pudu LRT station and the streets around the night market were poorly illuminated and practically deserted, and for that reason we would suggest that it is best to visit between 6 PM and 8 PM and not later in the evening.
Jalan Sayur is a small street with maybe two dozen stalls, so if some food looks tasty, give it a try; but a few of the best-known vendors include:
Chun Kee Tai Bu Mee (春记大埔面) - No doubt the most famous eatery in the area, this simple restaurant has sold handmade hakka-style noodles topped with minced meat and vegetables for generations. It is open for lunch and in the evening.
Chua Curry Chee Cheong Fun (咖哩豬腸粉) - Sells traditional Hong Kong-style rice noodles but instead of the more typical sweet, spicy, and peanut sauces, they top their noodles with soft pork skins and drown them in a thin curry sauce.
Lin Brothers Fried Radish Cake (林氏兄弟炒粿角) - Well-known for its Chinese-style radish cakes stir-fried with eggs, bean sprouts, and green onions.
Rong Jie BBQ Tofu (容姐烧豆腐) - A local favourite offering grilled tofu and grilled dried cuttlefish drizzled with thick, savory rojak sauce and crushed peanuts. It's an intense flavour combination.
Char Kuey Teow (炒粿條) - There are at least two or three vendors selling the classic Chinese-Malay noodles on Jalan Sayur. Compared to elsewhere in the city, these sellers tend to stir-fry on very high heat, use a particularly dark rich sauce, and prefer to mix in salted egg for a very strong flavour.
On our visits, our favourite was the char kuey teow without the salted egg, but char kuey teow always is our preferred Malaysian street food option. Certainly feel free to find your own favourites.
Below, we have mapped out what we believe to be the quickest and safest route from the Pudu LRT station to Jalan Sayur. Visit early in the evening, go as a group, and stick to the main street when walking around the corner to Jalan Sayur. Happy eating!
How to Get Here: Take LRT Ampang (Line 3, Yellow) or LRT Sri Petaling (Line 4, Brown) to Pudu Station (AG10, SP10). Use the Jalan San Pang Exit (past the small convenience stores in the station). Walk along the long path under the elevated train track, but turn left at the end to go to Jalan Pudu instead of turning right to go to the carpark by Jalan San Pang. Do not use the Jalan Pudu Exit. It empties into an awkward and dark alley behind retail buildings.Like Jalan Sayur? Tell your friends and frenemies on social media that you discovered it first:

Pudu Glutton's Lane Food Discovery #3 : Steaming Hot Fried Radish Cake !
We continue with this food trail into Pudu's glutton lane with a steaming hot plate of fried radish cake. Firstly you will notice the queue... all eager for their turn as they reach the stall. Here's a simple stall that has a long history for its simple one dish offering ! The master chef can be seen doing his non-stop frying on a big kuali using not one but two ladles! The oversized kuali serves two purposes, one part for keeping the radish cake hot while the other part for the actual hot frying sequence. It's a skill that comes with years of experience on how to make sure that the radish cake is not too burned. Have a go at this delicious street food at the glutton lane here and taste for yourself a unique slice of food culture.

What to See and Eat in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
What to See and Eat in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
TRAVEL HUSTLE REPEAT GEAR ►
MY FILM MAKING KIT ►
Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia and is amongst the fastest growing cities in Southeast Asia. In this episode of our Malaysia video series, David explores the country’s bustling capital city to show you the best of what to see and eat in Kuala Lumpur.
Nowhere else in Kuala Lumpur can you see the mix of Chinese, Indian, and British architecture than in and around Merdeka Square. There are several important historic buildings located here. One such building is the KL City Gallery, which was an old printing press turned gallery space where visitors can learn about KL’s history. Across the street is the stunning Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the City Theatre.
After sightseeing around Merdeka Square, David heads into the Central Market to check out some of the handicrafts and shop for masks to add to his collection. The Central Market is a great place to purchase souvenirs and expertly crafted items. David picked up a couple of Indonesian-style Batik masks at the Native Gallery on the second floor.
Another KL landmark that David visits is the Thean Hou Temple, a massive Buddhist temple overlooking the Bricksfield neighborhood (AKA “Little India”). After prayer service, David heads into Little India to get a small “taste” of what Malay Indian culture is all about. He and Ana sample some Indian fare at a local restaurant and get some henna art done on their hands.
The National Monument is their next stop – a sculpture commemorating Malaysia’s struggle for freedom. The bronze sculpture depicts a group of soldiers holding the Malaysian national flag. If the sculpture looks familiar it’s because the same Austrian sculptor, Felix de Weldon, designed the Marine Corps War Memorial in Virgina, .
The Petronas Towers were once the tallest twin towers in the world! They continue to be Malaysia’s most iconic buildings. David heads up to the Sky Bridge to check out the amazing views and learn about the history of the towers. The observation deck is located on the 86th floor.
Now, where to eat in Kuala Lumpur:
First stop is Madras Lane in Chinatown to a restaurant specializing in chicken and rice and barbequed pork. Since the weather that day was hot, David couldn’t skip out on trying a refreshing ABC dessert (Ice Kacang AKA Air Batu Campur), which is basically shaved ice with red beans, sweet corn, jellies, and evaporated milk. It is the ULTIMATE refresher on a hot day.
At night, Jalan Alor Street in the Bukit Bintang district is a great place to eat. It is lively and there are so many types of dishes to try! Some standout dishes are the Hokkien pork noodles, chicken satay, and butter prawns. Ti
Next up is another food street called Jalan Sayur. You won’t find many tourists here – this food street is more of a local hangout. David tries a few dishes including fried pork fat with curry, prawn noodles, fried chicken, and a fish cake. As you may have noticed, there aren’t many common Malaysian dishes here, so serious foodies only!
Be sure to bring cash.
And those are David’s top recommendations of what to see and eat in Kuala Lumpur.
Have you been to KL, share your suggestions for what to see and eat!
