One minute in Maasailand
During a visit in Tanzania I got the opportunity to visit a Maasai village.
The Maasai tribe live in Kenya and Tanzania.
Their lifestyle is quite different and more traditional than many other tribes. They live in small dung-huts, made by the women. Traditionally they don’t use a matchbox to make a fire.
They are highly dependent on their livestock, and keep cows, goats and sheep. In dry times they can herd the cattle for many weeks away from the village to find green pastures. Their main sorce of flod is milk, mest and blood from the livestock. Nowadays many go to school and have adapted to a modern lifestyle. This village is located close to Lake Manyara in Tanzania where the tribe is still living according to old traditions.
The Maasai tribesmen traditionally wear a red cloth, the shuka. The women wear kangas, colorful fabrics with Swahili proverbs on.

African culture Maasai Warrior Dance - Kenya | Award Safaris
Kenya is an iconic East Africa #Safari destination and home to the Maasai tribe. The Maasai are well known for their unique culture and tribal dress. Your #Africa safari is not complete until you visit the colorful Maasai tribe. They are among the best known local populations due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress. The #Maasai tribe (or Masai) is a unique and popular tribe due to their long preserved culture. Despite education, civilization and western cultural influences, the Maasai people have clung to their traditional way of life, making them a symbol of Kenyan culture. The Maasai speak the Maa language and are a member of the Nilo-Saharan family that is related to Dinka and Nuer in the north.
Why do Maasai wear red?
RED is considered a sacred color, and is always the basic color of the shuka, or the maasai blanket worn around the shoulders by both men and women. It represents blood, and it is considered important for Maasai warriors to wear it as a way to protect themselves against wild animals.
What to do in Kenya. Traditions and culture of the Maasai
The warrior is a source of pride and of great importance in the Maasai culture. From childhood to adulthood, young Maasai boys begin to learn the responsibilities of being a man and a warrior. The role of a warrior is to protect their animals from human and animal predators, to build maasai homes known as kraals and to provide security to their families.
Maasai rite of passage - Eunoto
Like in many African cultures through rituals and ceremonies, including circumcision, Maasai boys are guided and mentored by their fathers and other elders on how to become a warrior. Although they still live their carefree lives as boys – raiding cattle, chasing young girls, and game hunting – a Maasai boy must also learn all of the cultural practices, customary laws and responsibilities he’ll require as an elder.
Eunoto is an elaborate ceremony that is usually performed to “graduate” the young man from their Moran and carefree lifestyle to that of a warrior. Beginning life as a warrior means a young man can now settle down and start a family, acquire cattle and become a responsible elder. In his late years, the middle-aged warrior will be elevated to a senior and more responsible elder during the Olng’eshere ceremony.
Why do Maasai drink blood?
The Maasai’s entire way of life truly revolves around their precious cattle. The maasai lifestyle revolves around their cattle. All of the Maasai’s needs for food are met by their cattle. They eat the meat, drink the milk and, on occasion, drink the blood. Bulls, oxen and lambs are slaughtered for meat on special occasions and for ceremonies.
Mixed blood and milk is used as a ritual drink in special celebrations, or given to the sick.
