Kofukuji Temple used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara, which is the most powerful family clan over much of the Nara and Heian Periods. The temple was founded in Nara at the same time as the capital foundation in 710. At the height of Fujiwara domination, the temple consisted of over 150 buildings.
Today there remain a couple of buildings of great historic importance, including a five story pagoda and a three story pagoda. The five story pagoda is 50 meter tall, ranking second in Japan, after the five story pagoda at Kyoto's Toji Temple with only seven meter gap. Kofukuji's pagoda is both a landmark and symbol of Nara. It was first built in 730, and most recent reconstruction was done in 1426.
While addmission to Kofukuji's temple grounds is free and it can be entered around the clock, there are two areas that require addmission fee: Kofukuji's National Treasure Museum and the Eastern Golden Hall. The National Treasure Museum, recently renovated, exhibits part of the temple's great art collection and is something that must not miss out on for lovers of Buddhist art. Among the many outstanding exhibits, the three-faced, six-armed Ashura Statue is one of the most renowned Buddhist statues in all of Japan.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (National Treasure Museum and Eastern Golden Hall)
Closed: Opened all year round.
Admission: 600 yen (National Treasure Museum), 300 yen (Eastern Golden Hall), 800 yen (both)

Japan Trip: Shin-Yakushiji Temple Nara35
Japan Trip: Shin-Yakushiji Temple Nara35
Shin-Yakushiji Temple was established during the Nara Period (710-794) by an empress to pray for recovery of the ailing emperor. It is devoted to Yakushi Buddha, the patron of medicine in Japanese Buddhism. Shin-Yakushiji means New Yakushi Temple, because there had already existed a Yakushiji Temple. During its heyday, Shin-Yakushiji once consisted of a large complex of buildings, but it suffered from fire damage and only one building, the present main hall or Hon-do has survived from the 8th century.
Inside the main hall, 12 life size statues of guardian deities stands surrounding a two meter tall statue of a seated Yakushi Buddha, which are the temple's main objects of worship. The Yakushi statue is a wooden statue while the guardians are made of clay. Each guardian has a different character and possesses a different weapon. Visitors will never be bored while admiring them. There are also a few small paths around the temple grounds so that visitors can stroll around.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00
Closed: Opened all year round.
Admission: 600 yen
Access information
It takes about five minutes by foot to Shin-Yakushiji Temple south of Nara Park. Support me on Ko-fi!
Nara Park (奈良公園, Nara Kōen) is a large park in central Nara. Established in 1880, it is the location of many of Nara's main attractions including Todaiji, Kasuga Taisha, Kofukuji and the Nara National Museum. It is also home to hundreds of freely roaming deer.
Considered the messengers of the gods, Nara's over 1000 deer have become a symbol of the city and have even been designated as a natural treasure. Deer crackers are for sale around the park, and some deer have learned to bow to visitors to ask to be fed. Nara's deer are surprisingly tame, although they can be aggressive if they think you will feed them, so make sure not to tease them with food.
Nara Park (奈良公園 Nara Kōen) is a public park located in the city of Nara, Japan, at the foot of Mount Wakakusa. Established in 1880 it is one of the oldest parks in Japan. Administratively, the park is under the control of Nara Prefecture. The park is one of the Places of Scenic Beauty designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Over 1,200 wild sika deer (シカ or 鹿 shika) freely roaming around in the park are also under designation of MEXT, classified as natural treasure. While the official size of the park is about 502 hectares (1,240 acres), the area including the grounds of Tōdai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, and Kasuga Shrine, which are either on the edge or surrounded by Nara Park, is as large as 660 hectares (1,600 acres).
While Nara Park is usually associated with the broad areas of the temples and the park proper, previously private gardens are now open to public. These gardens make use of the temple buildings as adjunct features of their landscapes.
The park is home to the Nara National Museum and Todai-ji, where the largest wooden building in the world houses a 15-metre (50 ft) tall statue of Buddha.
According to local folklore, Sika deer from this area were considered sacred due to a visit from Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto, one of the four gods of Kasuga Shrine. He was said to have been invited from Kashima Shrine in present-day Ibaraki Prefecture, and appeared on Mount Mikasa (also known as Mount Wakakusa) riding a white deer. From that point, the deer were considered divine and sacred by both Kasuga Shrine and Kōfuku-ji. Killing one of these sacred deer was a capital offense punishable by death up until 1637, the last recorded date of a breach of that law.
After World War II, the deer were officially stripped of their sacred/divine status, and were instead designated as national treasures and are protected as such. Today, visitors can purchase deer-crackers (鹿煎餅 Shika-senbei) to feed the deer in the park. These crackers are exclusively sold by the WNOW company.
The number of deer grew in the postwar period to around 1,200 in 2008, leading to concerns about environmental and crop damage and discussion of culling.
In 2010 a man was sentenced to six months in prison for killing a deer with a crossbow.
During fiscal 2016 a record number of 121 people were injured by deer. In 2016 it was announced that the area around Nara would be designated into four different zones, with the outer zones allowing deer to be captured and killed. The culling started in 2017, with a limit of 120 deer to be culled during 2017. As of July 2017 there were around 1,500 deer living in the park, and at least 164 people had been injured by them in fiscal 2017-2018. Most of them were tourists feeding the deer.
In August 2017 traps were set to catch deer on the outskirts of Nara. Most Japanese news coverage of the story did not include the fact the deer caught in the traps would be killed.[11][12]
In April 2018 Nara city set up new signs in English, Chinese and Japanese informing tourists that the deer are wild animals and to not tease them during feeding.
Alt-J's 2014 album, This Is All Yours has three tracks, Arrival in Nara, Nara and Leaving Nara, the second of which explicitly references Nara Park in its lyrics.

Secret Garden in Asakusa | Ep. 070 | OurLifeInJapan
Today we visited a secret garden in Asakusa. Denpo-in Temple Garden is hidden next to the famous Senso-ji Temple, and has been closed for the public. However, just since the last couple of years, you can visit it for a limited time a year (6 weeks during the Spring). We took our bicycles, and also sampled some amazing coffee at Bridge Cafe in Kappabashi and vegan curry at Sasaya Cafe in Sumida.

【The Star Festival TANABATA】
According to legend, on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar two star-crossed deities called Ori-hime and Hiko-boshi meet in the heavens.
Orihime represents Vega, Hikoboshi represents Altair.
Orihime and Hikoboshi fell in love and were so crazy about each other that they could not focus on their work.
The heavenly gods got angry and separated Orihime and Hikoboshi
onto the different sides of the Milk Way.
However, the heavenly gods felt sorry for them and allowed them to cross the Ama-no-gawa to meet each other once a year on July 7th.
On this day, many people pray for good weather on July 7th,
because if it rains, Orihime and Hikoboshi will not be able to meet up due to the rising water levels of Ama-no-gawa.
It is part of a tradition practiced throughout Japan celebrating
the arrival of the star festival Tanabata.
We put up bamboo decorations to celebrate the reunion of Orihime and Hikoboshi on Tanabata.
It is believed that your wish will come true if you write it on the Tanzaku and hang it on the bamboo sticks.
It is said that Tanabata is a special day for lovers because it is the day where lovers reunite.
Zojoji was founded in 1393 as an orthodox and fundamental nembutsu seminary for Jodo shu in the Kanto (east Japan) region.
Zojoji was relocated to the present site in 1598 after Ieyasu Tokugawa, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, entered Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1590 to establish his provincial government.

Japan - Land of the rising sun Part 3 Kobe
Travel with Video Adventures through Japan and discover the history and the beauty of this ancient land.
Kobe is the capital of Hyogo Prefecture and one of Japan's ten largest cities. Located between the sea and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is also considered one of Japan's most attractive cities.
Kobe has been an important port city for many centuries. Kobe Port was one of the first Japanese ports to be opened to foreign trade in the late Edo Period, and the city remains one of Japan's more cosmopolitan cities.
In January 1995, Kobe was hit by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, which killed over 5000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings. Just 15 years later, the city is completely rebuilt, and few signs of the terrible event are left
