Vanity Station brings drag to life in Halifax | Behind the Scenes
On Feb. 25, Halifax drag queen Vanity Station (Connor McKiggan) took over the University of King's College's Wardroom for Drag for Justice, a drag queen fundraiser.
Station – an international development studies student at Dalhousie – and several other local queens performed to various songs to raise money for the Equality Effect's 160 Girls Project.
We got a behind the scenes look at what it takes to get dressed in drag – makeup, padding, wigs and all! We also sat down with Station to hear what drag means for her.

In the Parlour Room - Say it with Swagger
Say it with Swagger
Not all of us can say it with swagger like history's toastmakers. Wordsmiths like Oscar Wilde and Ralph Waldo Emerson held their own and their companions' attention when giving a toast -- can you do the same?
Here are some tips to help you lead the charge when charging your glasses at the next occasion.
Lead with it -- it sets the tone, whether witty and whimsical or raunchy and rowdy -- you want to be able to direct everyone's attention so the beginning of your event is your best bet.
Take the correct stance -- standing, holding a glass at chest-height, and project your voice. There's no point in going through all of this hard work if half the guests can't hear you.
Keep it short and sincere -- if you had to sum up the reason for the toast in as few words as possible -- start there. If you had to tweet the toast, could you? This is a great way to keep it short and sweet, which is something everyone appreciates. Although I encourage brevity, I don't want you to be brief over making the most of the moment -- so weigh each side of the recommendation appropriately.
Consider your audience -- so this goes without saying -- avoid being too zealous when it comes to any topic in particular. And don't say anything you wouldn't want your mother hearing you say. How long can a toast be? I'd say by the time your arm signals it's tired from holding a glass up, you've over done it!
Quote someone famous -- With the state of search engines these days you should be able to find the perfect quote for your occasion in less than 20 minutes. Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. I like BrainyQuote.com
Practice -- Run through your toast a few times before delivering it -- highlight the key points and run through it in your head -- if you can't remember the whole thing, you've overwritten. Remember Short & Sincere wins the day here.
However you finish it up, end on a high note. If you've cracked a joke or made an amusing observation, bring us back to the point of why we're all here -- a compliment to the guest or guests of honour is all you need to do to tie everything up with a nice neat bow.
THAT'S IT: Do it at the beginning, Keep it short and sincere, consider your audience, throw in a quote for good measure, Practice and End on a high note.
Q&A: What's the best toast you've ever heard? Are you a toastmaster supreme? Are you looking for ways to raise your toasting skills? If you have any Event related Questions you'd like us to answer; comment on this video or write to us at service@parlourroomevents.com and remember to share this video with your friends.
