Loggia dei Lanzi (or Loggia della Signoria) is on the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy
The Loggia dei Lanzi, also called the Loggia della Signoria, is a building on a corner of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy, adjoining the Uffizi Gallery. It consists of wide arches open to the street. The arches rest on clustered pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The wide arches appealed so much to the Florentines, that Michelangelo even proposed that they should be continued all around the Piazza della Signoria. Sometimes erroneously referred to as Loggia dell' Orcagna[1] because it was once thought to be designed by that artist, it was built between 1376 and 1382 by Benci di Cione and Simone di Francesco Talenti, possibly following a design by Jacopo di Sione, to house the assemblies of the people and hold public ceremonies, such as the swearing into office of the Gonfaloniers and the Priors. Simone Talenti is also well-known from his contributions to the churches Orsanmichele and San Carlo. The vivacious construction of the Loggia is in stark contrast with the severe architecture of the Palazzo Vecchio. It is effectively an open-air sculpture gallery of antique and Renaissance art. The name Loggia dei Lanzi dates back to the reign of Grand Duke Cosimo I, when it was used to house his formidable landsknechts (In Italian: Lanzichenecchi, corrupted to Lanzi), or German mercenary pikemen. After the construction of the Uffizi at the rear of the Loggia, the Loggia's roof was modified by Bernardo Buontalenti and became a terrace from which the Medici princes could watch ceremonies in the piazza.

This open-air gallery displays spectacular sculptures. Adjacent to the Uffizi Gallery, the passage consists of wide arches open to the Piazza Signoria.
The first open-air exhibition area in the world was built in the 14th century and during the 16th century, it served as an expression of the Medici power. A roof garden was added later, from which the Medici family would watch ceremonies in the piazza.
Allow yourself enough time to explore the statues and don't miss the statue of Perseus, a grand bronze statue created by Benvenuto Cellini in 1554. The open-air gallery is always open - that means you can visit it at night when it is nicely illuminated and more importantly, less crowded.

STEFANO RICCI DONATES LIGHTING FOR THE LOGGIA DEI LANZI IN FLORENCE
STEFANO RICCI honored Florence by donating a new lighting for the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, Italy. The new lighting underwent its first testing on Monday, June 18th, concluding the daylong program put together for the 40th Anniversary of the Florentine Fashion House which launched the 82nd Pitti Immagine Uomo fair.
I would like to dedicate such an important day for my company, to beauty and to Florentine cultural heritage. As a businessman, in a context such as this one, I believe it to be my duty to publicly express my gratitude to everyone who has contributed to make this dream come true--said Stefano Ricci on the eve of the event.
The Superintendent Alessandra Marino declared In the Loggia dei Lanzi, the historical city's illumination will exploit the full potential offered by new technologies. It will be possible to manage the lighting in a more flexible manner, allowing to underline special events from everyday lighting settings. These should be moderate and pay respect to the architectural features of the monuments in order to blend with the darkness of night.

Piazza della Signoria:
Piazza della Signoria is an L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. It was named after the Palazzo della Signoria, also called Palazzo Vecchio. It is the focal point of the origin and of the history of the Florentine Republic and still maintains its reputation as the political hub of the city. It is the meeting place of Florentines as well as the numerous tourists, located near Ponte Vecchio and Piazza del Duomo and gateway to Uffizi Gallery. The impressive 14th-century Palazzo Vecchio is still preeminent with its crenellated tower. The square is also shared with the Loggia della Signoria, the Uffizi Gallery, the Palace of the Tribunale della Mercanzia (1359) (now the Bureau of Agriculture), and the Palazzo Uguccioni (1550, with a facade attributed to Raphael, who however died thirty years before its construction). Located in front of the Palazzo Vecchio is the Palace of the Assicurazioni Generali (1871, built in Renaissance style).
Palazzo Vecchio
The Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace) is the town hall of the city. This massive, Romanesque, crenellated fortress-palace is among the most impressive town halls of Tuscany. Overlooking the square with its copy of Michelangelo's David statue as well the gallery of statues in the adjacent Loggia dei Lanzi, it is one of the most significant public places in Italy, and it host cultural points and museums.Originally called the Palazzo della Signoria, after the Signoria of Florence, the ruling body of the Republic of Florence, it was also given several other names: Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo dei Priori, and Palazzo Ducale, in accordance with the varying use of the palace during its long history. The building acquired its current name when the Medici duke's residence was moved across the Arno to the Palazzo Pitti.

The city itself is an open-air museum! But if there is one place where this definition takes on its full meaning, it is the Loggia della Signoria. Or Loggia dei Lanzi. Or Loggia dell’Orcagna! Whatever its name, the loggia is a unique example of an open-air sculpture gallery containing antique and Renaissance art and one of Florence’s landmarks (and it’s free!).

It consists of wide arches open to the street and the name Loggia della Signoria comes from its location along one side of Piazza Signoria, adjoining the Uffizi Gallery. The name Loggia dei Lanzi has been used since the mid-sixteenth century, when the place was used by Grand Duke Cosimo I to house the German mercenary pikemen, known as “Lanzichenecchi”.
The name Loggia dell’Orcagna, on the other hand, is due to an incorrect attribution of a project.
It was built between 1376 and 1382 by Benci di Cione and Simone di Francesco Talenti, possibly according to a design by Jacopo di Sione, to house the assemblies of the people and to hold public ceremonies of the Florentine Republic.
Since the sixteenth century, with the creation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Loggia became an expression of Medici power and was intended to accommodate some sculptural masterpieces, becoming one of the first open-air exhibition areas in the world. Note that the sculptures were not positioned according to merely aesthetic criteria but to affirm and represent specific political meanings.
After the construction of the Uffizi, Buontalenti created a roof garden above the arches of the Loggia and the roof became a terrace from which the Medici could watch ceremonies in the piazza (today, it is one of the most spectacular terraces in Florence, attached to the Uffizi Museum, and it houses the museum’s bar and various events).
