Description:
Since the invention of the modern automobile, we have been in love with our cars, trucks and motorcycles. It’s hard to think how we could function on a daily basis without a personal car around to take us to the grocery store, movie theatre or over to a friend’s house. This mode of transportation is such an important part of most peoples’ lives that we have no idea how we’d cope if cars suddenly disappeared tomorrow. Sure, most cars pollute and after a decade or so we get rid of the old and bring in a new car – filling up wrecking yards and burnings tons of gasoline in the process. The automobile is so important that rather than develop a whole new mode of transportation we instead focus our energy on creating more efficient gasoline burning engines and new models of electric cars. Nonetheless, the car is an integral part of our lives and our culture.
Of course, many people have often heard the saying (but never really payed any attention to it) that driving is one of the most dangerous things we do in our daily lives. Indeed, getting behind the wheel of your ride and heading off to work or some other destination can be very dangerous. Statistically, the number crunchers say that you are far more likely to die driving your car than flying in a plane. The numbers seem to back this up by showing that over 90 people are killed every day in motor vehicle accidents in the US alone. It all makes sense once you think about it. If you think about all the people out on the road and add in distracted and drunk drivers, mechanical failures and bad weather then it’s easy to see why driving can be so dangerous.
But what about the actual sections of roads and highways that seemingly have a high number of accidents and fatalities all year round. That is, it can be bad enough driving on ‘regular’ roads and highways around the world but there are roads which, for whatever reason, just seem more dangerous than the rest. You are probably picturing the classic mountain side road, carved into the rock with minimal safety barriers and exposed to landslides and all the inclement weather you can think of. Yes, those roads are very dangerous, but they aren’t the only ones to avoid driving on.
As part two of our ‘dangerous roads’ series, we look at 10 roads you probably wouldn’t want to drive on. These motorways are found all across the world, in all sorts of environments and at all sorts of altitudes. There are the expected mountain roads – narrow and crumbling where one small mistake means you are going for a very long fall. There are also the remote and isolated highways running through deserts and the vastness of Siberia. There are even the sea level roads which provide their own nasty little surprise that can ruin your day (or life). We guarantee that after seeing this your daily commute will appear to be a walk in the park.

Luxury iPic theater opens in Manhattan
(7 Oct 2016) LUXURY IPIC THEATER OPENS IN MANHATTAN
More and more people are opting to stay home to watch movies these days. iPic Entertainment is continuing its effort to reverse that trend with the opening of its first iPic luxury theater in New York City.
The iPic Theaters Fulton Market opens its door to the public Friday (7 OCT), offering what iPic Entertainment CEO and Founder Hamid Hashemi says is the most comfortable way to watch a movie in a movie theater.
The lap of luxury - as you can see we're sitting in a pod. These are custom designed patented pods that encapsulate two leather-covered seats. The seats are reclining, push of a button, you can get your seats reclined, pillows and blankets, popcorn is no charge. This is truly an affordable luxury, really the best way that can watch a movie. If you were to watch a movie at your home, this is how you would be watching it.
Hashemi maintains that even with advancements in home entertainment, there's still nothing like watching a movie - with other people - at the theater.
You can have the greatest kitchen in your house, you still go out to a restaurant. You're going out to a restaurant because you're going for a shared experience. Movies are the same. Yes, you can watch them at home, people have the greatest flat screen TVs now and a great sound system but still really nothing replaces sharing those feelings and emotions with a group of people.
This is the 15th luxury theater iPic Entertainment has opened in the United States since 2006, with other theaters in such cities as Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Chicago and Redmond in Washington State.
Part of the luxury experience is getting to eat food - beyond just popcorn, nachos and Raisinets and served right to your seat. iPic theaters feature food developed by Chef Sherry Yard, who says she's a movie buff herself.
We're all busy. We don't have that much time. Quite often you're running, you're trying to get to the theater to see a great movie and you're trying to fit in a dinner right before hand and here at iPic, we've redefined the way you can dine in the dark. It's truly amazing that you can have tuna on crispy rice, you can have a lobster roll, Caesar salads, filet mignon sliders, just the most amazing food right here at your seat, laid back, watching the best movies ever.
Yard says the food is crafted so moviegoers won't make a mess while eating during the film.
In addition to our creativity, the most important thing is that the guest can dine in the dark and when you dine in the dark you can't really see perfectly and you're watching the movie, so you need food that's really going to interact and handheld items. So things you can pick up with your fingers, things that are easy to eat - never too loud, never too smelly.
The company even features what it calls ninja butlers who will bring people food in the theater before and during the movie, as quickly and quietly as possible, so as not to disturb the movie watching experience.
There's even a full restaurant and bar upstairs at iPic Theaters Fulton Market called the Tuck Room, featuring Yard's food and some creative drinks from executive bartender and sommelier Adam Seger. He says he calls his approach to providing drinks as farm to glass.
We're really in touch with the seasons, with making everything we possibly can make from scratch from maraschino cherries, our own homemade ginger beer to even hand cutting our own ice for our Old Fashions and for Manhattans and then we also are inspired from everything from the rich history in lower Manhattan.
The iPic Theater is located in the Fulton Market Building in Manhattan's South Street Seaport.

The Nightmare World of Gang Stalking
More than 10,000 people worldwide claim they're the victims of a vast organized surveillance effort designed to ruin their lives, a phenomenon known as gang stalking. Mental health experts see gang stalking as a symptom of paranoia, but the self-identified victims who insist what they're experiencing is real have come together online and in support groups to share their stories.
VICE met up with a handful of Americans who claim their lives have been derailed by gang stalking to understand what serious consequences the phenomenon presents. Then we hear from Dr. Josh Bazell, one of many physicians who believes the victims of gang stalking are experiencing dangerous delusions that could be treated by mental health professionals.

The city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation: O'Hare International Airport is the second-busiest airport in the world when measured by aircraft traffic; the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and rail road freight. The city has one of the world's largest and most diversified economies with no single industry employing more than 14% of the workforce.
In 2015, Chicago had over 52 million international and domestic visitors. Chicago's culture includes the visual arts, novels, film, theater, especially improvisational comedy, and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, gospel and house music. It also has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues. Chicago has many nicknames, the best-known being the Windy City.
Tourism
In 2014, Chicago attracted 50.17 million domestic leisure travelers, 11.09 million domestic business travelers and 1.308 million overseas visitors. These visitors contributed more than US$13.7 billion to Chicago's economy. Upscale shopping along the Magnificent Mile and State Street, thousands of restaurants, as well as Chicago's eminent architecture, continue to draw tourists. The city is the United States' third-largest convention destination.
Sports
The city has two Major League Baseball (MLB) teams: the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox. In 1885, the first steel-framed high-rise building, the Home Insurance Building, rose in the city as Chicago ushered in the skyscraper era, which would then be followed by many other cities around the world. Today, Chicago's skyline is among the world's tallest and most dense.

Chicago is the 2nd most visited city in the US, with 58 million domestic and international visitors in 2018, behind New York City's approximate 65 million visitors. Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States. With an estimated population of 2,705,994 (2018), it is the most populous city in the Midwest. Chicago is the principal city of the Chicago metropolitan area, often referred to as Chicagoland, and the county seat of Cook County, the second most populous county in the United States. Located on the shores of freshwater Lake Michigan, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed and grew rapidly in the mid-19th century. The construction boom accelerated population growth throughout the following decades, and by 1900 Chicago was the fifth largest city in the world. Chicago made noted contributions to urban planning and zoning standards, including new construction styles (including the Chicago School of architecture), the development of the City Beautiful Movement, and the steel-framed skyscraper.

The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698 distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2), New York City is also the most densely populated major city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world, with an estimated 20.3 million people in its 2017 Metropolitan Statistical Area and 23.7 million residents in its Combined Statistical Area. A global power city, New York City has been described as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world, and exerts a significant impact upon commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, and sports. The city's fast pace defines the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. New York City is home to more than 3.2 million residents born outside the United States, the largest foreign-born population of any city in the world. In 2013, the tri-state New York Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.4 trillion. If greater New York City were a sovereign state, it would have the 12th highest GDP in the world.
New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship, social tolerance, and environmental sustainability, and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity.
Many districts and landmarks in New York City are well known, and the city received a record 61 million tourists in 2016, hosting three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013. Several sources have ranked New York the most photographed city in the world. Times Square, iconic as the world's heart and its Crossroads, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and the city is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive in the world. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, with multiple signature Chinatowns developing across the city. Providing continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems worldwide, with 472 stations in operation. Over 120 colleges and universities are located in New York City, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top universities in the world.
