Luckenbach Texas: Visit Fredericksburg TX
First made world-famous by Waylon, Willie and the Boys almost 40-years ago in song, Luckenbach Texas is what legends are made of.
This tiny German community was first established as a trading post in 1849 and now the historic dancehall, general store and bar is a great place to sit back and enjoy live Texas music, great company and a cold one in the Hill Country.
Hi folks, I’m Daryl Whitworth, and I grew up just a few short miles from Luckenbach Texas. So close in fact, we could hear the music when Willie would hold his big Fourth of July picnic here years ago.
Today in Luckenbach Texas you’ll find the legendary dancehall – with one of the great old wooden dance floors and a fun place to two-step every weekend.
Pickers’ circles happen daily and musicians, locals and visitors alike are welcome to strum their guitar, sing along and or just relax under the 400 year old oak trees. That’s right- Luckenbach Texas is home to live music 364 days a year- everyday but Christmas Day.
There are also some one of a kind festivals here: such as the Live Free & Fly Fourth of July Festival, Luckenbach Blues Festival, and even the Hill Country Food Truck Festival, all of which feature great live music.
For more information on events and the music, go to VisitFredericksburgTX.com to plan your getaway.

TRIP to Luckenbach Texas September 2019 Waylon Jennings Willie Nelson texas hill country
Luckenbach is an unincorporated community thirteen miles (19 km) from Fredericksburg in southeastern Gillespie County, Texas, United States, part of the Texas Hill Country. Luckenbach is known as a venue for country music.
Luckenbach, Texas is known primarily because of the famous song by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. For years, Willie even had his famous family picnic on the grounds at the banks of Snail Creek next to the old dance hall. ... For many Texans and Hill Country regulars, Hondo is known as a humorist and writer.
Today Luckenbach maintains a ghost-town feel with its small population and strong western aesthetic. One of its two main buildings houses the remnants of a post office, a working saloon, and a general store. The other is the dance hall. The post office was closed on April 30, 1971 and its zip code (78647) was retired. The general store remains active as a souvenir shop where visitors can purchase a variety of items, including merchandise featuring the town's motto Everybody's Somebody in Luckenbach, postcards, T-shirts, sarcastic and humorous signs, and the local newspaper.

Luckenbach, Texas

Luckenbach is an unincorporated community thirteen miles (19 km) from Fredericksburg in southeastern Gillespie County, Texas, United States, part of the Texas Hill Country. It consists of 9.142 acres (37,000 m2) between South Grape Creek (a tributary of the Pedernales River) and Snail Creek, just south of U.S. Highway 290 on the south side of Farm to Market Road 1376. This location is roughly 50 miles (80 km) north of San Antonio and 69 miles (111 km) west of Austin.
On December 15, 1847, a petition was submitted to create Gillespie County. In 1848, the legislature formed Gillespie County from Bexar and Travis counties. For more details on this topic, see List of Petitioners to Create Gillespie County, Texas. While the signers were overwhelmingly German immigrants, names also on the petition were Castillo, Pena, Munos, and a handful of non-German Anglo names.
Its oldest building is a combination general store and saloon reputedly opened in 1849 (1886 is more likely based on land improvement records of the state library) by Minna Engel, whose father was an itinerant preacher from Germany. The community, first named Grape Creek, was later named after Minna's husband, Carl Albert Luckenbach, who was then her fiance; they would later move to another town which became Albert, Texas. Luckenbach was first established as a community trading post and was one of the few that never broke a peace treaty with the Comanche Indians, with whom they traded.
Citizens of the town claimed one of them (Jacob Brodbeck) had launched the first airplane years before the Wright Brothers. Its population increased to a high of 492 in 1904, but by the 1960s, Luckenbach was almost a ghost town. An ad in the paper offering town — pop. 3 — for sale led Hondo Crouch, rancher and Texas folklorist, to buy Luckenbach for $30,000 in 1970, in partnership with Kathy Morgan and actor Guich Koock. Hondo used the town's rights as a municipality to govern the dance hall as he saw fit.
Today the town maintains a ghost town feel with its small population and strong western roots. One of its two main buildings houses a post office, saloon, and general store. The other is the dance hall.
Luckenbach's association with country music began in the summer of 1973, when Jerry Jeff Walker, backed by the Lost Gonzo Band, recorded a live album there called Viva Terlingua at Luckenbach Dancehall. That album became an outlaw country classic. Four years later (and a year after Crouch's death), Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson memorialized Luckenbach with the song Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love), cowritten by rock and soul producer Chips Moman and keyboardist Bobby Emmons. In his 2000 book Are You Ready for the Country?, author Peter Doggett recalls that Jennings later told audiences that he hated the song and (had) admitted 'The guys that wrote the thing have never been to Luckenbach. Neither have I.' Notable concert appearances in the town include Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Pat Green, Robert Earl Keen, and Lyle Lovett. The little community is still an active home to country music as of 2010, where folks gather by the score to listen to area musicians and drink cold beer, particularly Shiner Bock, a local favorite brewed by the oldest brewer in Texas.
Country Rock artists Kenny Chesney and Kid Rock later covered the Jennings/Nelson song as a duet as the two performed earlier.

Dance'in Fool's at Anhalt Hall
September 20, 2014
Anhalt Hall is a dance hall and community center on Anhalt Road in Spring Branch, Texas, a mile off Highway 46 and twenty-eight miles west of New Braunfels. The first part of the hall was constructed in 1879, and additions were completed in 1898 and 1908.
German immigrants first settled the area around Anhalt in 1855. The site was known as Krause Settlement by 1859. The general store there was built by Conrad and Louis Krause in 1856 and became the post office in 1879. The community grew quickly since it was situated at the midpoint on the trail between New Braunfels and Boerne. Krause Settlement became a place where travelers could water their animals, do business at the freight station, and rest before traveling on. When the post office was established in 1879, the name of the community was changed to Anhalt at the suggestion of local settler Heinrich Wehe. There have been two explanations offered for the name Anhalt. One, that it designates stopping place in German, and the other, that it refers to a region of the same name in Germany.
Wehe maintained the freight station on his place; a number of residents were freighters who transported goods between the Gulf Coast and communities inland. Anhalt Hall became the meeting place for the Germania Farmer Verein (German Farmer Association), an association formed in 1875 to protect cattle from thieves and Indians. The residents branded their cattle with the association brand G and began to alert residents and law officers to rustling. The program was successful, and by February 7, 1876, members received a state charter and adopted bylaws.
When the first part of Anhalt Hall was completed in 1879, the association used it as a meeting place. This part of the hall is now the old office and the ladies' restroom. In 1887 the German Farmer Association began building a larger meeting hall connected to the original structure. It was completed in 1898 and is the present-day seating area for the dance hall. In 1908 a 6,000-square-foot oak dance floor was added to the hall. The bandstand and center stage were added to the hall after 1908. The hall has high ceilings and large fans at each end. In 1993 the association spent $60,000 to replace the tin roof which had been damaged by leaks and to make other structural repairs. A lean-to added to the south side of the building provides covered seating. The dance floor was refurbished during the renovation.
The first six-piece brass band in Comal County, the William Specht Spring Branch Band, was formed in 1880 and played at Anhalt Hall. George Strait, as part of the Ace in the Hole Band, played at Anhalt Hall for the Smithson Valley High School FFA dance in 1978. Country singers such as Clay Blaker, Gary P. Nunn, Johnny Rodriguez, Geronimo Treviño, Chris Wall, and Jerry Jeff Walker have performed at Anhalt Hall. The movie All the Pretty Horses (2000), which starred Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz and was directed by Billy Bob Thornton, includes a scene filmed at Anhalt Hall.
As of 2011 the German Farmer Association still met at the hall throughout the year, including for two major festivals--Maifest and Oktoberfest. Maifest and Oktoberfest are held on the third Sundays in May and October. After holding a successful picnic in May 1877, the association decided to hold a planting festival in the fall that would exhibit field and garden products and livestock. This event became known as Oktoberfest and has been held at Anhalt since 1877. Oktoberfest features entertainment and dances and a traditional meal of pot roast, peas, potato salad, and sauerkraut.

COWBOYS DANCEHALL
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
Cowboys Dancehall is a 70,000 square foot state of the art entertainment complex that offers a variety of entertaining options for groups of 50 to 4,000! With two levels, two dance floors and a 20,000 square foot indoor rodeo arena the options are endless! They also feature seven theater size screens and twenty 42” plasmas.
TWO LEVELS OF ENTERTAINMENT
The Ground Floor
The focal point of the ground floor is the Main Stage, which features a three-tiered,
“Las Vegas” style performance stage, capable of multi-level positioning. The stage backdrop continues the “old western town” storefront façade matching the building’s exterior architecture. Fronting the stage is the Texas-sized dance floor, which is flanked on three sides by bar rails and seating.
Bars and beerwells servicing the main music and dancing area are strategically located throughout the ground floor. Rest rooms are located in two of the floor’s four corners. The General Store and Coat Check are located near the front entrance. The Mechanical Bull is stationed in the middle of a spiral staircase, so spectators can gather around the staircase and look down upon the rider. Still on the ground floor, but visually separate from the Main Stage are the indoor rodeo arena and grandstands.
The Mezzanine Level
The mezzanine level of Cowboys is all about “the view.” The seating around the perimeters of the ground level dance floor allow the guests to get an overall picture of the club. The projection screens and video monitors enhance their experience with optimum viewing of the performance area. The mezzanine level also provides a balcony, showcasing the rodeo arena, and a spiral staircase overlooking the mechanical bullpen.
With three bars and its own dance floor, a gaming area complete with billiards and more, as well as food service and catering areas, the mezzanine level is the perfect setting for special events and private parties. This is the Single LARGEST Dance Floor We've EVER experienced,.......W~O~W!
Then,...Our 2nd Venue of the Evening was the Midnight Rodeo and it was exactly what Jim remembered from 20+ years ago.
What can you say about a nightclub that has thrived for over 30 years in an industry where two years is the average? Let’s just say that Midnight Rodeo and those who have been here, understand. Over 25,000 square feet continue to be enjoyed by young and old alike – as country music and a patented race track dance floor transcend all age groups in appeal. Customer surveys pinpoint the following when responding to the question: what do you like about us? Atmosphere, music, dance floor, friendly staff, age group of guests and our favorite and 2nd highest answer – “Everything!” Midnight Rodeo – An Acre of Dancin’ and Glancin’ at Thousand Oaks & Nacogdoches in San Antonio.

USA: COUNTRY SINGER WILLIE NELSON AT FARM AID CONCERT
English/Nat
Country Western singer Willie Nelson is celebrating the Fourth of July by helping drought-stricken farmers.
About 10-thousand people are expected to attend a Farm Aid 1996 concert in Texas.
Farm Aid promoters say proceeds from the show will go to a fund for farmers in the Southwest hit by this year's devastating drought.
Country star Willie Nelson has teamed up with other performers to put on a day-long concert near Luckenbach, Texas.
They're hoping to raise money for farmers in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas who are fighting drought conditions that have crippled the region.
President Clinton has declared a state of emergency in the area.
In Texas alone it's believed the drought has cost farmers and ranchers 2.4 (b) billion U- S dollars in damage.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
There's a lot of entertainers that realise how bad it is because we go up and down the highway everyday and we talk to farmers and ranchers every night. So we know how it is. It's kind of difficult to explain to someone who's in the city - sitting there - having enough problems of their own: paying the rent, buying the groceries, paying the car payment - or even on a higher level - if you've got a bank note to meet somewhere or you're not really that - you don't really have time to think about the farmer.
SUPERCAPTION: Willie Nelson, Country Music singer
His fans are clearly impressed with his efforts.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well, I think it's great. I think Willie Nelson deserves a big - not only a round of applause - we need to build a statue for him. He's done more for the farmer in the business than anyone I know of - what this money does is it goes to certain grants - or certain groups that are helping farmers out. It doesn't matter if it's an attorney fee or whether it's consulting fees or what.
SUPERCAPTION: Carl King, Texas Corn Growers Association
SOUNDBITE: (English)
If it weren't for his efforts in bringing things like this to the public - the general public - no one would really realise what is going on.
SUPER CAPTION: David Warzecha, American Beef Producers and Consumers Association
The talent roster for Thursday's concert includes Waylon Jennings, Leon Russell, Billy Joe Shaver, Asleep At The Wheel, and Robert Earl Keen, among others.
The Farm Aid concerts were first organised in the mid 80's to help farmers hit by tough economic times.
