STRESA. The Best Place to go in ITALY. (Lake District)
We spend an afternoon exploring the islands of Stresa! Situated in Northern Italy, Stresa is on Lake Maggiore and surrounded by the Alps! Stresa has a few different islands and we visited two of them.
We started on Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island) where we had a pizza lunch and then explore the small streets. We also flew our drone to get some great overhead footage of the island.
We then made our way over to Isola Bella to spend some time in the palace and the amazing gardens, which are supposed to be one of the best examples of Italian gardens in all of Italy. While there we encountered white peacocks for the first time.

Internationally recognised as the jewel of Lake Maggiore, Stresa is one of the most exclusive tourist destinations on Lake Maggiore. In addition to millions of tourists, the Borromean Islands also enchanted Stendhal, Liszt, and Mendelssohn. Dumas recalled them in “The Count of Montecristo”, Turner and Corot represented them in oil paintings and watercolours, D’Annunzio even tried to rent one. Just across from the town of Stresa (in Italy), the archipelago is easily accessible in just few hours by ferryboat from Locarno or Ascona. It consists of three islands: Isola Bella with its grandiose mansion and terraced gardens, Isola Madre with its luxurious English park, and Isola dei Pescatori, a picturesque fishing village boasting an ancient atmosphere.
Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island): It is the smallest and quaintest of the three islands, and the only one with permanent residents. The restaurants on the island offer menus based on the typical cuisine of the lake.
Isola Bella (Beatiful Island): dominated by its magnificent Baroque palazzo, which is accompanied by a luxuriant Italian-style garden laid out over ten terraces, 37 meters high. The garden displays exotic plants of great rarity and many strikingly lovely flowers, alongside statues, fountains and the Unicorn, depicted in the coat-of-arms of the aristocratic Borromeo family. There are also beautiful white peacocks, free to roam the gardens, which with their regal bearing contribute to giving Isola Bella the flavour of past times.

An Italian Adventure: Family Trip to Lake Maggiore (July 2018)
During the first week of the summer holidays in 2018 we travelled to Lake Maggiore in northern Italy to celebrate the end of or eldest daughter's primary school journey and for some family time together before she started high school in September.
We stayed at Villa Caruso through Bookings For You and explored Luino, Maccagno, Cannobio and Laveno during our stay.
We loved it there - the fantastic scenery, the delicious food, the beautiful towns and the incredible sunsets. There was so much more we could have done - hopefully we'll be able to make a return trip one day.
There is a series of posts on the blog all about what we got up to with plenty of photos.

Riding Lake Maggiore by bike
Staring in Golina, Switzerland, my friend Mursel Rexhepi and I rode around this beautiful lake. Our travels took us across the border to Italy and back again. The total distance was 176 kms. The roads were good with only a few tunnels. We stopped several times to cool off in the lake. Total elevation gained was 2800m.

This was a trip I've been longing to make in years. Who on Earth haven't heard of the beauty of Italian lakes? Ok, out of people with passion to travel?)
Right.
So I decided to visit Como and Maggiore (but also visited Lugano and Orta, because I just couldn't sleep well knowing they are so close to me).
Lake Maggiore is second largest lake of the area and is located by the southern Alps. Thought that Switzerland is THAT close made my knees shake with excitement but I knew I'd better make a separate trip eventually. Who said traveling is a bliss? It's a stress, especially in Europe, where everything is so close))
Stresa (0:14) turned out to be a lovely city with narrow streets, people chilling in cafes, posh hotels (1:01) and nice beach.
It was such a hot day, I decided to take a boat trip and it appeared that I could make a trip to Borromean islands right from the beach. (1:28) It was a blissful ride itself (1:47), the lake is surrounded with mountains and landscapes are stunning!
First stop was at Isola dei Pescatori (2:16), the only inhabited island, which was tiny but very beautiful and romantic (look: 2:34; 2:40; 2:44) :)) I spent my time there mostly by the water watching the lake and trying to believe it's all real.
Isola Bella (3:04), larger island dominated by Borromeo palace (3:30) also offers great sights of the lake and surrounding islands. If only I could attach smells! Salty waters, blooming flowers, gelato & pizza, coffee and fruits. Happy tourists everywhere, though a bit melting from sun. Isola Bella says goodbye by showing its most beautiful sight: amazingly beautiful gardens (4:50).
P.S. Doesn't it remind you of Laputa, the castle in the sky at 4:58? ????

Family trip to Lake Orta, Italy
For our last European trip before we move back to the US, we took a three day trip to Lake Orta, Italy. It's one of our favorite destinations and is incredibly kid friendly.
Places to see in ( Stresa - Italy ) Isola Pescatori
Places to see in ( Stresa - Italy ) Isola Pescatori
Isola dei Pescatori is an island in Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. As the most northerly of the three principal Borromean Islands it is also known as Isola Superiore and, with a population of 57, it is the only one to be inhabited all year round. Unlike Isola Bella and Isola Madre, the island no longer belongs to the Borromeo.
The island is about 375 metres long by 100 metres wide. A narrow street running along its spine is joined by cobbled alleys to the promenade that encircles the island. The promenade is frequently flooded and the houses built against it are constructed to allow for this.
In 1971, the population of the island was 208. While the traditional occupation of fishing still exists—local restaurants providing a ready market for the fish—tourism has become central to the economic life of the island as its picturesque charms have made Isola dei Pescatori a popular destination, particularly for day-trippers, but also for more extended visits. In addition to the hotels, restaurants and gift-shops, there are boutiques selling craft products.
The church of San Vittore (Victor the Moor) retains traces of an ancient chapel that was probably constructed for the monks of Scozzòla (an abbey of San Donato di Sesto Calende founded by Liutardo, bishop of Pavia, in the mid ninth century). The church was previously dedicated to S. Gangolfo (Gangulphus), whose veneration is linked with the Abbey of San Donato.
