Morocco Travel Guide: Marrakech, Atlas Mountains and Essaouira
On this trip you’ll be heading to Marrakech, the heart of Morocco, where spices linger in the market air, the sun sets on street performers, and the senses are treated to a whirlwind of sights and sounds. Discover life in the sprawling medina or get lost in the alleyways towards the souqs. Marvel at the tilework found in the royal Bahia Palace and Dar Si Said or learn how ancient traditions are woven into the fabric of Marrakech; there’s more than one way to fall in love with this cosmopolitan city.
Morocco is a North African country renowned for diversity, and this is one of the things that make it such a fascinating destination to visit. It’s a place where one will find many cultural influences, and the landscape offers visitors a chance to experience the ocean, Atlas Mountain peaks and the Sahara Desert all in one go. You might be travelling to one country, but in Morocco, there is a whole world to explore.
In Essaouira discover how coastal winds and different tribes can shape a port city. It’s a melting pot with Arab, Berber and European influences. While the sea attracts windsurfers, culture vultures flock to the medina’s alleyways for galleries and a spot of people watching. The vibrancy found in the country’s cities is matched by life in the Middle Atlas Mountains, where visitors can swap people watching and fortified walls for hiking, folk music and stargazing.
Observe nomadic shepherds, hike through limestone river canyons, enjoy impressive views and Berber hospitality and warmth as you make Midelt your basecamp for the Middle Atlas Mountains. As the sun goes down on the soaring peaks, the stars will light up the skies.
If we’ve inspired you to explore this north African country further, head over to TourRadar for all the different ways you can discover a world of flavour, culture and history in Morocco.

#02 Tangier (Morocco Travel Guide)
Visiting Morocco is a once in a lifetime experience!
It is like a magic carpet, full of diverse landscapes, exotic combinations of colors, of ancient medinas, buildings with stunningly geometrical berber designs, cultural experiences which have been preserved over centuries, incredibly hospitable people who make even first time visitors feel as if they are coming home after a long voyage. A place where even your eyes & nose look forward to your next meal, not just your taste-buds. A taste of the regal life in the artistically designed riads, waking up looking at magical brass lamps, rooms with multihued curtains, pottery and carpets! Not only is Morocco a photographer’s paradise, but also a shopper’s paradise, where you feel like buying everything!
Tangier is a melting pot of various influences from all over the world, made richer over the centuries by travelers, artists, immigrants who visited, got sucked into the experience and also have kept it vibrant.
Tangier is such an international location for a reason. After a few centuries of Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish and British occupations, Tangier was declared an international zone in 1923. For the next 33 years (before Moroccan independence from France), Tangier was an important port for intercontinental trade, diplomacy, artists, writers, poets and philosophers who reveled in its freewheeling polyglot ambience. Henri Matisse, William S. Burroughs, Jean Genet, Paul and Jane Bowles, Tennessee Williams, Patricia Highsmith and Allen Ginsberg were famously inspired by Tangier; so are the artistically inclined, often foreign residents who own some of the most stylish homes here today.
Walk around the Tangier medina brings all the historic stories, cosmopolitan perspectives, artistic viewpoints, global influences over all these centuries to life. It is a good idea to sit at the 1920s Gran Café de Paris and take a time-lapse of your people watching and hear more stories about how Tangier has evolved over the centuries

#01 Casablanca and Rabat (Morocco Travel Guide)
Visiting Morocco is a once in a lifetime experience!

Casablanca, is the most populous city and Morocco’s commercial capital and looks like one. The stunning Hasan II mosque makes you realize that you don’t need to travel far in history to find beautiful architecture. With its exquisite wood carvings, delightful colours, picturesque location its a fine example of how we can turn our imagination into reality.
Rabat, the capital of a Kingdom and is home to 1.8 million people, still Morocco’s third largest city, Rabat, leads a relatively anonymous existence on the country’s Atlantic coast.
A short 45-minute train ride from Casablanca, Rabat is a place where Moroccan history spectacularly collides with modern life; and where the country’s European roots wonderfully weave themselves through its African heritage.
A huge mausoleum was constructed for Mohammed V, the former Moroccan King in Rabat, which is still worshiped by people in the country. It has white walls, green roof of a color of Islam, and at the entrance, guards in red uniform are always standing to protect the mausoleum.
Hassan Tower stands just opposite of Mohammed V’s Mausoleum. It was constructed by a sultan in the 12th century, supposed to be the biggest mosque in the country, and it was never completed. You’ll see a lot of columns around the tower, which shows how big the mosque could have been.
Kasbah Oudaya is one of the major highlights in Rabat. “Kasbah” usually means a big mansion or house, but here it’s a huge fortress town with its own palace and mosque, surrounded by stone walls. It was built in the 12th century, and still is the symbol of the old part of Rabat.
Just like other medinas in Morocco, old medina in Rabat is the center of people’s life and visiting here is a great chance to see the local life. Stop by a pharmacy to see traditional perfumes and medicine, a food market with fresh vegetables and fruits, even clothes shops are fun to come, to enjoy talking with local show owners. You can be a part of typical Morocco here.

On my trip to Morocco with two friends of mine, Eddy Sunarto and Yanni Rahardja in April-May 2009, occasionally I showed some small close-up tricks to the locals or whomever we met whenever we had chance during the cross-country trip.
We agreed that visiting the country itself as one of the most exciting experiences ever, adding to it we totally had a great fun as well as with being able to give some moment of happiness through the universal language of magic ...

► The BEST VPNs for China:
Today, we're going DEEP for some of the BEST street food in Marrakech, starting out bright and early for some EXTREME whole roast sheep AKA Royal Sheep AKA Sheep Popsicles. This is a classic Marrakech street food, the Méchoui, a whole roast baby sheep cooked underground in a big coal pit that is sealed with clay. We found the best place to eat it in Marrakech, where they have 6 ovens full of these baby sheep. They are served one by one to the hungry lineup of customers outside at the restaurant who either take it home to eat or who eat it street food style at the restaurant. This is definitely one of the most unique street foods in the world and super delicious to try on the streets of Marrakech!
If you're thinking of coming to Morocco to eat street food, you definitely have to come to Marrakech to eat this Mechoui AKA royal sheep. We found this at Ayachi grill on the outskirts of Marrakech.
After it's roast underground in the coal oven, its taken out and wrapped up in a plastic bag to let it steam and soften up. Then, it's chopped up and served on a plate with some bread, salt, and cumin. It's incredibly delicious!
After tasting that amazing Mechoui aka sheep POPSICLE, we kept going on the meat tour to get some BBQ beef kebabs right on the street. This is one of the best street foods in Marrakech, because it's served with this funky and strong butter that tastes like blue cheese.
This was found at bab taghzout. The BBQ is so smoky and it was fun to watch.
And to finish off our Marrakech street food adventure, we found another meat that was actually not my favourite. This was the stuffed spleen sandwich. It was full of beef and liver and had a funky offal aroma. We found it at Sidi Mimoun.
It was an AMAZING day in Marrakech, Morocco. We ate 3 delicious meats and it was all worth it! I hope you enjoy this travel vlog and the delicious street food that we found!
