Masai Mara | Kenya Series | Africa Vlog
Masai Mara has always been on my must visit list! The game drives, the food, the people and the WILDLIFE of course was to die for! We would head out @ 5:45 am( before sunrise) and often return only after enjoying the beautiful Mara sunsets! The wildlife included lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, hippos, zebras and wildebeests of course! During the month of July- August, millions of them move into the Masai mara ecosystem in search of greener pastures!
On the last day we decided to visit a local masai village. These all located all around the reserve and one can book a day tour in order to go visit the same. A small entrance fee of about $15 per person must be paid to the accountant of the tribe in order to get a complete guided tour of the village. The masai culture is an interested one indeed. In the masai tribe if a man is interested in marrying a woman he must exchange her for an agreed number of cows. This usually ranges anywhere between 1-5 cows sometimes even more. The masai tribe consumes their own medicines ie medicines maid by their own village doctor. They consume cow blood and milk as their staple diet.

INSIDE THE MASAI MARA
While shooting a film for my client, All Travels African, I got a chance to visit The Masai Mara. Watch what I experienced through this journey.
#TheMasaiMara is a surreal experience and if you get a chance to go, don't say no...just go. It might not be around one day.
With the Government backed SGR passing through the Masai Mara, the effect on the eco-system in the Mara & coupled with other issues facing this great conservancy - it could be disastrous.

Maasai Mara National Park - Kenya
Maasai Mara is situated in south-west Kenya and is one of Africa’s Greatest Wildlife Reserves. Together with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania it forms Africa’s most diverse, incredible and most spectacular eco-systems and possibly the world’s top safari big game viewing eco-system.
Made famous by the abundance of the big cats, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and the Great Wildebeest Migration and the Maasai people, well known for their distinctive custom and dress. The Maasai Mara Ecosystem holds one of the highest lion densities in world and this is where over TWO MILLION Wildebeest, Zebra and Thomsons Gazelle migrate annually. Maasai Mara National Reserve stretches 1,510 sq km (580 sq miles) and raises 1,500-2,170 meters above sea level. It hosts over 95 species of mammals and 570 recorded species of birds.
Distance:
It’s about 270 km from the capital Nairobi City and takes about 5-6 hours by road or 40-45 minutes by flight. The road is great for the most part. There is a section from Narok town to Sekenani Gate that is dirt road but fairly good. The other road through Lemek and Aitong town is not good day all, very bumpy.
Best Time To Visit:
With the wildebeest migration in JULY – OCTOBER, this is the best time to see this incredible movement of animals. Although it is not guaranteed that the wildebeest get to Maasai Mara, it has yet to let us down. Also, December to February are great times as it is dryer and good for the Big Cats. The Maasai Mara is an all year round destination with the big cats, and all the big game still in the Maasai Mara Ecosystem.
Recommended Number of Days:
Safaris including the Maasai Mara are without a doubt some of the best you ever get. To get the best out of your safari time, try a book a seven day safari at least and cover two or more other destinations. Due the amount to be seen in the reserve we feel a THREE to FOUR day safari is suitable. If you are interested in photography the longer you stay the more chance of getting the ultimate photo. We also recommend that you add on a few more days to see more of Kenya. (Amboseli National Park, Tsavo East National Park, Tsavo West National Park, Northern Kenya. Why not add some beach to… we like Watamu Beach & Diani Beach).

Masai Mara & Lake Nakuru Tour Part-1
The Maasai Mara National Reserve (also known as Masai Mara and by the locals as The Mara) is a large game reserve in Narok County, Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Mara Region, Tanzania. It is named in honor of the Maasai people (the ancestral inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from afar: Mara, which is Maa (Maasai language) for spotted, an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.
It is globally famous for its exceptional population of lions, leopards and cheetahs, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is only a fraction of the Greater Mara Ecosystem, which includes the following Group Ranches: Koiyaki, Lemek, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, and Kimintet.
Magical Scenes : Maasai Mara National Reserve
There is fresh grass sprouting in the Mara ecosystem following rains experienced in recent weeks making wildlife viewing excellent and more pleasant. In the tourism calendar in this area, the grass is a highlight of the wildbeest migration from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara National Reserve which starts next month.

#DAY1 | TRAVEL TO MASAI MARA ON A BUDGET | 3 CAMPING DAYS | VLOG|

What's Masai Mara Safari Like
Maasai Mara Game Reserve is the top safari destination in Kenya and is about 260km from Nairobi, Kenya's Capital.
Game Drive Safari
A game drive means to see wildlife by driving in a safari vehicle. Maasai Mara is a popular place to spot the Big 5: Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo, Rhino. Together with the Serengeti in Tanzania, Masai Mara forms Africa’s one of the most diverse safari big game viewing eco-system.
A usual game drive lasts the whole day. It involves a lot of driving and stopping when an animal has been spotted through the aid of your driver/ guide, who is a professional wildlife spotter.
In the game drive, you will see the animals in their natural habitat and we recommend a stay of at least 2 to 3 nights to appreciate them. Each day, you usually bring a pack-lunch arranged by your tour operator. There is also an area where you can go on a short walking safari with a park ranger.
Accommodation
In a typical safari, camp means accommodation which is often a tented camp or a lodge-like the one that we stayed at. This type falls under Mid-range accommodation by Kenya standards. There is also plenty of mid-luxury to high-end luxury options for a heftier price tag. There are budget options too that are still private tented camps, it just varies on the amenities with basic interiors but you still have everything you need. Finally, there are camping sites too for the cheapest option.
Masai Mara is a year-round destination, just avoid the rainy season from April to May and also the peak season of June to October where prices are higher and crowds pile up unless you want to see the Great Migration.
The Masai Mara death bed
From July to about October every year, millions of wildebeests make the perilous journey between the Mara and the Serengeti, across the deadly Mara River, Battling the tide, and the waiting predators. This annual stampede is one of nature’s most spectacular events. But now the mighty Mara River is on a fight for it’s life, and it’s seemingly losing the battle. Tonight we assess the damage done on this fragile ecosystem and that if not urgently corrected, could spell the end, for the eighth wonder of the world. Sheila Sendeyo has the story.
Equestriaqn Safari in Kenya with Hidden Trails
A nine-day exploration safari on horseback in the Masai Mara wilderness area.
The Masai Mara Game Reserve and Greater Mara Conservancies represent most people's idea of East Africa. The landscape is one of rolling savanna, intersected by dark green veins of riverine woodland on the banks of the Mara and Talek rivers. This wilderness is an extension of the Serengeti (Tanzania) ecosystem and is considered by many to be Kenya's best wildlife sanctuary, where animals can still be seen in vast numbers. Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, hippo, crocodile, antelope and gazelle are some of the many species to be found.
