Easy Off Road 4X4 Trails In Southern California
Are you new to off roading and looking for some easy 4x4 trails to get started on? This is the NotaRubicon’s list of favorite easy and beginner off-road trails. All of these 4x4 trails can be completed by any stock 4x4 vehicle and most are short enough that they can be completed in just a few hours.
Number 10 - Rainbow Basin
The very first trail that The Notarubion ever went on was Rainbow Basin . So easy, it can hardly be considered a trail, it’s a great dirt road for first-time off-road driver. Rainbow Basin is a colorful geologic formation in the Calico Peaks mountain range, about 8 miles north of Barstow just off of Ft. Irwin Road. The Rainbow basin is known for it’s beautifully colored rock formations.
Number 9 - The Red Canyon Jeep Trail
The Red Canyon Trail is a scenic trail that starts at Interstate 10 runs through the hills to Summit Road near Salton Sea. This trail is mostly flat easy road but there is one large, steep and intimidating hill to get up but any stock Jeep can make it easily.
Number 8 - The Bradshaw Trail
The Bradshaw Trail runs from Salton Sea to Blythe and is mostly flat, easy road with just a few sections of sand. There are several interesting things to see along the way including the abandoned Eagle Mountain railroad bridge.
Number 7 - Rattlesnake Canyon
Rattlesnake Canyon goes from highway 247 in Johnson Valley up into the mountains near Big Bear. There are a few sandy areas, a few narrow rocky spots, and usually mud in the winter months but any 4X4 Jeep or truck can complete this trail easily. Most times of the year you will find dozens of cows roaming free throughout the entire area
Number 6 - Burns Canyon Road (2N02)
Burns Canyon Road is an flat, easy dirt road that connects Pioneertown to Baldwin Lake near Big Bear. The Burns Canyon trail offers great views and also connects you with several other nearby trails such as Rattlesnake Canyon or harder trails such as Marble Canyon, Heartbreak Ridge and the Garden of Eden Jeep trail.
Number 5 - Lytle Creek Ridge
The Lytle Creek Ridge Trail is an easy trail composed mostly of fire roads and power line roads which cross the San Bernardino National Forest near the Cajon Pass. The trail runs from Lytle Creek to Lone Pine Canyon and offers beautiful views of the Inland Empire and Cajon Pass.
Number 4 - Old Dale Road
Old Dale Road in Joshua Tree runs through the Pinto Basin and into the Pinto Mountains, where it becomes Gold Crown Road. The route ends at Highway 62 not far from 29 Palms. There are dozens of abandoned mines and historic mining camps lining the route making it one of the NotaRubicon’s Favorites. There are a few rocky spots and shallow water crossing in winter months, but any stock Jeep or high-clearance 4x4 vehicle can travel this entire road easily.
Number 3 - Phillips Loop near Calico Ghost Town
UPDATE 2019 - Phillips Loop has become a bit washed out and may now be too difficult for some beginners! Drive at your own risk and don't go alone!
Phillips Loop is a beautiful scenic drive in the historic Calico mining district not far from Barstow. The loop takes you through the beautiful mountains and landscape of the Calico Mountains and takes you to Kramer’s Arch - an amazing natural structure large enough to drive your Jeep through.
Number 2 - Cajon Bypass (3N45)
Cajon Bypass (3N45) also known as Old Rt 66 is a short, rough, dirt road that was part of the Historic Route 66 over 100 years ago.
Starting at the summit of Cajon Pass behind where the Old Summit Inn once stood, it winds its way through the hills offering beautiful views of Cajon Pass before it connects to Highway 138
Number 1 - Cleghorn Trail (2N47)
The Notarubicon’s favorite trail! Cleghorn is a 14 mile long trail that is actually a flat dirt road but it has several optional offshoots that range from easy to difficult - perfect for practicing your off-road and 4X4 skills. Many of the offshoots on Cleghorn are steep, off-camber and full of deep ruts but if you stay on the road instead, it’s flat and easy making this the perfect trail for beginners to practice on.

Across the Nevada Desert: Tonopah to Hawthorne on US 95
Here's a look at the drive on US Highway 95, northbound from Tonopah to Hawthorne, Nevada. What I love about this drive is when you leave Tonopah, there's a billboard for the McDonald's in Hawthorne, proclaiming it's Just Ahead!. But Just Ahead actually means 100 miles -- totally worth it, though, for a McFlurry.
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in June 2018. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

The Tahoe Keys real estate homes for sale update, South Lake Tahoe 5.23.2011
check us out at for more fun and information about South Lake Tahoe.
This video is a complete real estate market update for The Tahoe Keys, a neighborhood on the California side of South Lake Tahoe.
The report here includes how to find current real estate trends and conditions and how to compare them to the last 4 years of real estate home sales activity.
(Number homes: 856)
The Tahoe Keys is one of Lake Tahoe's most desired and coveted neighborhoods.
Singularly unique from all other Lake Tahoe areas, the Tahoe Keys is the only South Lake Tahoe neighborhood with direct access to the lake by boat.
With a little less than 1,000 homes, The Tahoe Keys is located in a 740-acre private marina community interwoven with 11 miles of inland waterways.
Featuring lake front homes, resplendent canals, back-yard docks, a tranquil lagoon, and easy boat access to the Lake, the Tahoe Keys is an ideal neighborhood to enjoy the wonder that is the Lake Tahoe lifestyle.
The Keys is situated amid breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains of the Tahoe Basin. Snow capped mountain peaks, stunning sunsets, this is a setting for all Lake Tahoe seasons.
Home Value ranges from those without boat docks in the high $400KK's, and there aren't many of these, to high-end lake front estates in the multiple millions.
Tahoe Keys homes priced in the $5's and $6's can sell quickly. In the inventory mix will be older homes w good remodel opportunities, distressed properties, and recent remodels and newer homes to choose.
Many Keys homes offer vacation rental opportunities, with a few well-planned homes doing up to $100,000 a year or more in annual rental income, though that is certainly not the norm.
If vacation rental income is important to you, think of it as a welcome contribution to a monthly mortgage, but certainly not all of it.
In the Tahoe Keys, One will find lake front estates, homes on large lots w quick lake access, back yard docks in all shapes and sizes, homes on open meadows, and other sections of the keys with no direct lake access.
Attended by a progressive home owners association, this private community comes with many attractive amenities: an indoor and an outdoor pool, lush, relaxing park areas, a basketball court, volleyball court, seven tennis courts, a safe, fun-filled children's playground, a private beach and an inspiring sunset pier.
The Tahoe Keys is minutes away from easy vacation shopping, South Lake Tahoe dining, and with it's in-town location, the Keys is also minutes from Lake Tahoe's famed year around entertainment and nightlife attractions.
Located within the Keys, and central to it, is the Tahoe Keys Marina. It is open year-round, and offers full boat services, charter and fishing tours, a top-notch, fun, gourmet restaurant and a full program of training and instruction for most all Lake Tahoe water sports and recreation activities.
Jetskis, power boats, pontoon boats, sail boats, competition wake board, wave runners, paddle boards and kayaks can be rented here.
Boat slips are available for in the Marina for public rental, or for homes that do not have a dedicated dock, of which there are far fewer that those that do.

Finding Good Crappie Fishing Spots
Jason made a point in the fall and winter to look for new crappie fishing spots with his electronics. He started in some productive arms of the lake and idled along break lines looking for brush piles with fish.
These creek channel edges are often where fishermen like to drop their brush piles. So Jason scanned with Lowrance HDS 3D Structure Scan for likely looking spots and brush piles until he found schools of crappie holding on them.
Once he saw a good school of fish on a brush pile, he stopped and fished it. He would cast a jig over the top, when they quit biting that, he would pitch to the piles from a closer distance, and finally he would get right on top of them and fish vertically on the pile.
He had one of the best fall/winter periods for crappie fishing in recent years by getting out and hunting for fish more with his electronics.

Summer is fast approaching us. What better way to spend it then on some trails in California?
We already gave you our Top 5 trails in the Southeast, but now it's time to sound off on the Top 5 trails in the Golden State.
At number 5 on our list is Mendocino National Forest in Northwestern California.
Going on a trail in Mendocino is a completely serene nature experience. OHV Trails include the Grindstone Ranger District and Upper Lake Ranger District Trails. The absence of paved roads or highways crossing the forest makes Mendocino the perfect place if you’re looking for tranquility and solitude.
Next on our list is California’s Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Areas in the Southeast!
These are the largest sand dunes open to OHVs in the United States. They sprawl from Southeastern California all the way into Mexico. Going on the 1,000 square miles of the Algodones Sand Dune system should definitely get your rig ready for Baja!
After you do that check out the Mojave National Preserve which is nestled between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Mojave is the third largest national park in the country clocking in at a massive 16 million acres. Be sure to put the Afton Canyon, Cedar Canyon, Fort Piute, Aiken Mines and Lava Tube on your wish list when planning out your trails.
Not too far from Mojave is our number 2 pick Johnson Valley.
This is home to one of the most grueling and legendary off-road competitions in the world: the King of the Hammers. The so called “hammers” are a large mass of hills that best even the most experienced off-roaders.
Extreme rock crawling isn’t all it has to offer though. You can also get your fill of open deserts, dry lake beds and sand dunes.
The trail at the top of our list needs no introduction for off-roaders; it’s the legendary Rubicon Trail. While it is only 22 miles long, Rubicon has gained a reputation for being the premiere testing ground for 4x4 enthusiasts. It is home to the Jeep Jamboree and of course gives its namesake to Rubicon variants of the Jeep Wrangler.
Famous obstacles like Post Pile, Walker Hill, Spider Lake, Chappie Rock, Buck Island Dam, Big Sluice and more are sure to give you a challenge.
Wherever you take your 4x4 this summer, be sure to post videos of your adventures to our facebook page here.

An after work run on the Hunter Lake Jeep Trail, Reno, Nevada
More info on the Hunter Lake Road Jeep Trail:
First off, this is Lightning Dragon's FIRST project that he shot completely. All of the primary camera footage was captured by a 6 year old!
The crew took on the Hunter Lake Jeep Trail after work a few weeks ago. This trail starts right outside of the Caughlin Ranch neighborhood in south west Reno Nevada and is an easy day or half day trip. But it's NOT an easy after work trip.
The road out from Big Meadow is LONG AND BUMPY. Like amazingly epicly bumpy. I recommend you turn around and head back out the way you came after seeing the beautiful Big Meadow.
Vehicles on this trip:
Our 1999 3rd Gen 4Runner
Jeep JK Unlimited Sport
Jeep JK Unlimited Rubicon
The road bisects the Mt. Rose Wilderness area which spans the greater part of the high ridge of the Carson Range from Tahoe Meadow on the south to Reno on the North. The Hunter Lake Road is cherry-stemmed into the wilderness area. Cherry-Stem roads are not uncommon and represent a compromise between wilderness preservation and motorized access.
How to find Hunter Lake Jeep Road
The road is shown on the Forest Service map though it isn’t labeled. The road designation is FR 392 and is signed as such, though only once you get up out of the congested area above Reno. There is potentially some challenge finding the route as trails and roads criss-cross all over down there. Best shot is to start at the end of Pinehaven Dr. follow the main route west up the mountain from there.
What to expect
As it winds up from Caughlin Ranch and enters the evergreen forest of the Carson Range, the Hunter Lake Jeep Trail is basically easy. You should have no trouble getting any SUV with real 4×4 up it. Crossovers with traction control, and decent clearance could also make it, though slowly. Subarus, like this one, might also make it. Down low on the trail the major obstacles are loose climbs with alternating pot holes and ruts. These are the holes like at 2:10 in the video where you see the front driver side tire of my 4Runner come up. There are a few spots where this will happen. Traction control and lockers can help, as can picking a better line.
Higher up the trees thin out and the trail it becomes rocky and there is one spot in particular where you see me having trouble getting up. That was probably a bad choice of line as well, but with the locker on it had no trouble. I don’t believe there is a bypass for this. Once you get to the top of the ridge and leave views of Reno behind, the road enters a dense forest and winds through the trees.
Alternate Routes
There are many alternate routes signed along the way. These are out and back spurs and loops off the main trail. They are signed 392a, 392b and so on. I have not explored or mapped them though I would like to some time.
Hunter Lake and Big Meadows
Totally hidden, and more or less anonymous and unknown to most people who live in Reno, even those who, like me, felt they had done a lot of exploring in the area, are the beautiful wild Big Meadows and Hunter Lake.
These days neither is much of a lake. I’ve heard and read that 10 – 20 years ago it Hunter Lake was occasionally a lake in the spring melt, but now it is just a meadow. There is a turnout and kiosk there, but not much else. It is a beautiful pristine spot however and is worth stopping to walk around and have a snack.
As you continue on from Hunter Lake the going is rough. REALLY ROUGH. There are some small obstacles, though no real challenges. But it is a long haul out to Big Meadows. The aptly named meadow is shockingly large given that it sits atop a mountain you probably always assumed held nothing but bear poop and scraggy rocks. There is a defunct timber dam through the meadow that makes an interesting hike. This is a great place to stop for exploration and lunch, should you be smart enough to nit be going through at 9 PM on a week day. Both Big Meadow and Hunter Lake were originally man made to provide water for saw mills in the area.
Getting back home
My recommendation is to turn around at big meadow and head back the way you came. It’s shorter and more fun.
If you want to make a loop out of it, head out the west end of the meadow where FR 392 Ts into FR 462. Turning left on FR 462 will take you across into the Bronco Canyon burn area. There might well be a way out, but the main route is gated at the property boundary near the log cabin on the Truckee river near Floriston. Heading right on 462 takes you past Cone Peak and a microwave relay station before descending Garson Road to Interstate 80 at Boomtown.
Garson road is not a challenge, per-se. It is brutally long and bumpy though. You’re probably thinking, “how bad could it be?” Trust me man, it’s bad. It will take 2 – 3 hours from Big meadow to get back to I-80. The first time we did it it was a rainy Saturday afternoon and was quite beautiful.

Road Trip: Bishop, CA to Reno, NV via Hwy 395
Reno, Nevada is the nearest big city, via Highway 395, to Bishop in the Eastern High Sierra of California and all of us here have made the trip dozens of times. It is such a pretty drive that I decided to film my trip up there to capture the beautiful and interesting scenery along the way.
I shot this video off-the-cuff so to speak, in August of 2012 during a trip to Reno, Nevada with a Canon HV40 HDV camera at 24fps.- Mike The Chevy Cheuvront, KIBS-FM radio, Bishop, CA.
