Places to see in ( Hilton Head - USA )
Hilton Head Island is part of the Lowcountry region in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It's known for Atlantic Ocean beaches and golf courses. The Harbour Town Lighthouse and Museum marks the southwest tip. The Coastal Discovery Museum features heritage buildings, trees and themed gardens. Between the island and mainland, the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge salt marsh hosts deer, alligators and birds.
Hilton Head Island is a vacation playland with famous beaches and great golf courses that overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Across Port Royal Sound, tony Hilton Head Island is South Carolina's largest barrier island and one of America's top golf spots. There are dozens of courses, many enclosed in posh private residential communities (historically known as 'plantations,' now often called 'resorts'). The island was the first eco-planned destination in the USA. Founder Charles Fraser believed a resort should blend with nature, so subdued colors, strict zoning laws (no building over five stories high, signage must be low and lit from below) and a distinct lack of streetlights characterize the environment here. But while summer traffic and miles of stoplights can stifle an appreciation of the beauty of the island, you can find some lush nature preserves, wide, white beaches hard-packed enough for bike riding, and a whole lot of dolphins.

Why Mitchelville Matters to Me
Mitchelville's legacy lives on today. Once as a major destination on the Underground Railroad, it was the first self-governed settlement for freedmen in the United States.

Good colored people, you have a great work to do, and you are in a position of responsibility. This experiment is to give you freedom, position, homes, your families, property, your own soil. It seems to me a better time is coming ... a better day is dawning.
With these words, Union General Ormsby Mitchel proclaimed that the land the people of Mitchelville, South Carolina, had once toiled under the chains of slavery was now their own.
The triumphant and touching post-Civil War story of the rise of the first self-governed settlement for freedmen in the United States took place right here, on Hilton Head Island.
It's a story as old and as rich as the soil itself; a testament to the sacrifice, resilience and perseverance of our nation's very first freedmen, and thanks to The Mitchelville Preservation Project, today, America can relive it.
In 1862, shorly after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed -- while most of the African-American slave population was still trying to adjust to the idea of their new post-war freedom -- the people of Mitchelville were busy creating a completely new, self-governed culture that would be the guidepost for generations to follow.
These industrious new citizens built homes on neatly arranged streets, elected their own officials, developed laws, built an economy, and implemented mandatory education for their children. In fact, the reports of the success of Mitchelville were so glowing, that the famous Underground Railroad freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman, was sent to Hilton Head to see this bustling town, so she could share the story of Mitchelville's self-governed success with future freedmen towns.
Situated on Hilton Head Island, SC, Mitchelville represents a jewel within the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor that forms the roots of the African-American's contribution to the heritage of freedom in America.
Today the Gullah, direct decedents of those who settled on Mitchelville, still live and continue the traditions of their ancestors.
Da spirit of freedom lives in we.

MITCHELVILLE: SPREADING THE STORY
Few Americans know the groundbreaking, country-shifting story that is Mitchelville, says Randy Dolyniuk, chairman of the non-profit Mitchelville Preservation Project. Beaufort County leaders like Dolyniuk feel the story of the nation's first self-governed Freedmen's town — the birthplace of African American freedom — is as historically significant as any in United States history. Josh Mitelman has the latest on efforts to make Mitchelville a household name everywhere.

The Story Of Mitchelville! - The LanceScurv Show
PLEASE GO TO:
Before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 and at the height of the Civil War, a group of escaped slaves, considered “contraband of war”, set about creating their own town on the grounds of the former Drayton Plantation on Hilton Head Island. Here Union General Ormsby Mitchel, created an actual town – instead of one of the more prevalent camps – with orderly streets, simple but accommodating wooden homes, a church, and most importantly, gave its inhabitants the freedom to govern themselves.
The newly minted citizens went about their business with elections, enacting various laws, collecting taxes, making a living, and naming their town “Mitcheville”, in honor of the forward-thinking General Mitchel. A compulsory education law for children was enacted— most likely the first such law in the South.
Today, over 150 years after the Civil War began, local Gullah, direct descendents of Mitchelville, carry on the traditions of their history-making ancestors and work with a diverse group of Islander’s to preserve and promote Mitchelville and its story of freedom.
While a work in progress, The Mitchelville Freedom Park, located on Beach City Road, has been fitted with a covered gazebo, an observation platform looking out toward Port Royal Sound, and kiosks telling the Mitcheville story through words and historical images.
Plans are in process by the Mitchelville Preservation Project to construct replica structures and offer learning opportunities to the public through lectures, exhibits, tours and special events.
It is the desire of those dedicated to the preservation of Mitchelville that the physical site exists as historical fact, but also that it’s very human, very American story of hope and perseverance serves to educate and inspire us all.
