Route 66 has gained a reputation as the United States of America’s most famous road. How did that happen, and why does it still matter?
In this episode of Vox Almanac, Vox’s Phil Edwards explores the history of the road and the textures of its present, from the road itself to the roadside attractions along the way, to the people who enjoy its diversions and those who help maintain them. It reveals a road that’s changed a lot over the decades but remains vital in unexpected ways.
When Cyrus Avery helped found Route 66 in the 1920s, he strived to create a road that would connect the Midwest to the West, and he resorted to promotional tricks and wheeling and dealing to get it done. The road quickly became a key route for migrants escaping the dust bowl and depression, forming its early reputation as “the Mother Road.”
That’s because it’s a road that’s more than a strip of concrete (or gravel, or dirt). It’s a historical document of everyone who’s traveled on it — as the many contributions from Vox’s YouTube subscribers show, that keeps it going even as the interstates run alongside it.
The number of Route 66 resources out there is huge, but we found these particularly helpful.

Route 66 Time lapse - Our Honeymoon May 2015 - Long Version
In May 2015 we got married and decided to drive Route 66 for our honeymoon.
This video is a time lapse of the mother road, starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica. I will also create a shorter version so check my other videos.
Filmed using a GoPro Hero 4 in time lapse mode. The first state (Illinois) has some footage missing due to power issues. But from St Louis onwards its pretty much complete.
2936 miles in a 5.7 ltr Hemi V8 Dodge Challenger.
We loved it.
First Snow in New Mexico

Ep 5: Route 66 in the Rod Iron
The final episode - we travel through more desert heat and more beautiful mountains to reach the end of Route 66 at the Santa Monica Pier. In just 11 days my dad and I drove our hand made, wrought iron, 1967 Volkswagen Beetle from our home in Canada to the starting point of Route 66 in Chicago, all the way to the End of the Trail in California visiting countless small towns, abandoned towns, roadside attractions and more.
In Episode 5 we leave our Las Vegas detour and rejoin Route 66 as we pass through the tiny, almost ghost town of Amboy, California. We then continue through the desert, pass by Joshua Tree, find a major fuel leak, and stop for a visit with Randy Carlson from Old Bug. Randy is an expert on old Volkswagens and has even owned a few of Rafael Esparza Prieto's original wrought iron beetles from Mexico.
From there we drive the final leg of our journey and head towards the Santa Monica Pier and the End of the Trail sign. Our journey took us 11 days and when we left, we really didn't know what to expect. We had no accommodations booked and no set schedule, we just drove as far as we could each day. We were slowed down by rain and mechanical issues, but also by the iconic Route 66 roadside attractions and then of course a detour to Las Vegas. In the end, our road trip saw us travel over 3,000 miles and through 11 states and 2 countries.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped us complete our road trip along the way, like Randy and Sebastien who drove with us to the Santa Monica Pier and helped film the last leg, the couple in New Mexico who drove back to their house to find us extra wire when we were having electrical issues, the repair shops in Missouri who let us use their tools and equipment and especially the biggest thank you to everyone we saw along the way who waved, stopped to say hi and shared pictures of our journey on Instagram - you helped make our trip that much more special.
This is Episode 5 of our trip. You can watch Episodes 1-4 on our channel youtube.com/traveleatwod and visit us on Instagram as well at instagram.com/traveleatwod.
Special thank you to Sebastien Schmit for the extra LA footage.

Police Brutality: 14 yr old girl Tasered in the Head
Police Brutality: DASH CAM VIDEO:
Tucumcari Police Chief Roger Hatcher has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into last weeks Taser shooting of a teenage girl.
Hatcher said he shot two Taser darts at Kailee Martinez, 14, Thursday while responding to a domestic dispute between the girl and her mother. One hit her in the head and the other struck her back.
Martinez said she was released from Albuquerques University of New Mexico Hospital on Sunday following a two-hour surgery to remove one of the darts from her head.
The surgery left her with 18 staples and six stitches.
I feel good being home, Martinez said Tuesday. It is a lot better than being in a hospital.
Martinez mother, Stacy Akin, said she drove her daughter to police headquarters after they fought about a cell phone.
Hatcher said the girl walked away from the police station and when he talked with Akin she had a bloody lip and scratches from a fight.
Hatcher said he found the girl in a city park, but when he tried to talk to her she ran into traffic without looking.
Hatcher said he was unable to catch her and used the stun gun because he didnt know where she might go and he had to get her stopped.
I was going to the park to clear my mind, Martinez said. I go there when I get angry. It is a place where I can calm down.
Martinez said she saw Hatcher drive around the park and did not want to stay there and deal with him. She said she was walking west across Monroe Street when Hatcher got out of his vehicle and told her to stop.
I remember him saying 'stop, stop' and then watching him pull it out (Taser), Martinez said. The next thing I remember was being in the ambulance, handcuffed.
Akin said her family has hired an attorney but declined to discuss any legal actions the family may take.
Akin said they will return to Albuquerque in a week for a follow-up doctors appointment.
To be honest, none of this should have ever happened, Akin said.
Rose said Hatcher was placed on administrative leave Monday
