Eastern Voices in the West Country
Eastern Voices in the West Country exhibition is the result of the first oral history project that looks into the previously unexplored history of Chinese immigrants in Bath. The video presented here is the centre piece of the exhibition. Other parts of the exhibition include archive photos and newspaper stories related to Chinese who lived in Bath from as earlier as nearly a century ago until 70s; portraits of interviewees with their treasured objects.
The project is supported by the Bath and North East Somerset Performance Reward Grant.

Many of the streets and squares were laid out by John Wood, the Elder, and in the 18th century the city became fashionable and the population grew. Jane Austen lived in Bath in the early 19th century. Further building was undertaken in the 19th century and following the Bath Blitz in World War II.
The city has software, publishing and service-oriented industries. Theatres, museums and other cultural and sporting venues have helped make it a major centre for tourism, with more than one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors to the city each year.
There are several museums including the Museum of Bath Architecture, the Victoria Art Gallery, the Museum of East Asian Art, the Herschel Museum of Astronomy and the Holburne Museum. The city has two universities – the University of Bath and Bath Spa University – with Bath College providing further education. Sporting clubs include Bath Rugby and Bath City F.C. while TeamBath is the umbrella name for all of the University of Bath sports teams.

First-ever Thea Porter exhibition opens
The late Thea Porter was an artist, fashion designer and interior designer who opened a Soho boutique in 1966 which instantly drew rock and film stars.
From her Greek Street base, she sold interiors and clothes featuring Eastern textiles and was later credited with pioneering the now iconic 'bohemian chic' look.
London Live’s Alison Earle went to the Fashion and Textile Museum in south east London to see a preview of the first ever exhibition to celebrate the designer.
Curator Laura McLaws Helms said: I spent several years interviewing people and made an elaborate database of every (Thea Porter) piece I know of in the world.
I was attracted to her love of luxury in her designs and the exoticism that she brought together with a sense of fantasy, she added.
The exhibition Thea Porter: 70s Bohemian Chic runs until May 3.

We went on a day trip to Bath and enjoyed a homeschool workshop at the Museum of East Asian Art. The children learnt about Ancient Chinese civilisation and tried their hand at Chinese calligraphy. Then we went to Lush to buy some Shampoo bars and soap to start our plastic free journey!
