Contemporary Camouflage- Interview with Rebecca Hannon
Contemporary Camouflage
Rebecca Hannon
Mary E. Black Gallery
1061 Marginal Rd. Suite 140, Halifax, NS
Opening: Thursday March 7, 6pm
On view: March 8 – April 28, 2019
FREE ADMISSION
Tuesday – Friday: 9am – 5pm
Saturday & Sunday: 11am – 4pm
A dazzling display is about to take over the Mary E. Black Gallery from March 7 to April 28. Local contemporary jeweller Rebecca Hannon has been playing with notions of concealing-and-revealing following her research into the extra ordinary history of Dazzle Camouflage used in WWI. This bright and visually stimulating camo was designed to confuse the senses of three dimensional forms and distance. Rebecca Hannon will envelope the Mary E. Black Gallery in an immersive installation, covering the walls with patterns of Dazzle Camo to create a back drop for her graphically stunning jewellery.
While playing with these concepts of strange camouflage, Hannon has also been meticulously problem-solving her way through a complex exploration of interlocking forms. Her brightly coloured jewelry is constructed from two dimensional pieces, lazer cut from laminate material that slots together forming three dimensional jewellery. Concealing the complicated structure and revealing agile, flowing jewellery Hannon’s works are intricate matrices of shapes and colour that trick the eye into perceiving simple, bright and fun wearable objects.
In Contemporary Camouflage Rebecca Hannon explores the perception of flatness and depth and uses the history of camouflage to explore adornment in humans and nature.

'Radiant Abyss:' a collaborative art installation by NS students
What does the ‘A’ in STEAM stand for?
The ARTS!
During the first week of November, more than 600 students from across Nova Scotia participated in STEMfest 2018 at the Nova Centre. The conference was designed specifically to give Grades 7 and 8 the opportunity to participate in hands-on, inquiry-based, career-related workshops in science, technology, engineering and math while teachers attended relevant professional learning sessions.
Sabine Fels, one of HRCE’s Fine Arts Specialists, added the arts into the conference by coordinating the creation of a collective student art installation to be permanently housed in the main foyer of the Nova Centre as a legacy feature. Radiant Abyss involves a critical examination of society’s plastic use and the effects of plastic pollution on our oceans and waterways.
The piece will be revealed in June.
Learn more about the project in this video.

Episode 2 of The Good News! This week i went to a craft fair at the Cunard Centre. I talked to inspiring entrepreneurs, a new grand mother, and more. The interview that touched me the most was the girl who mentioned losing her Dad this year. I lost my Dad 3 years ago and it was his passing that inspired me to follow my dreams and create projects like The Good News! Enjoy :)

Nova Scotia Community College: Kassondra
One of a series of four 30 second TV spots extolling the virtues of NSCC (Nova Scotia Community College). The brief was short and to the point: Tell the stories of 4 successful NSCC students in their own words and animate the results. We were given complete freedom to develop the styles and content of each of the spots, something that rarely happens in advertising.
NSCC: Kassondra. Made entirely of paper sculptures and model train set figures, this spot illustrates Kassondrass experiences in NSCCs business program. The different elements were constructed by hand over a 4 week period and animated using a stop-motion technique.
