First phase of Meng Wanzhou extradition hearing ends
The first phase of the Meng Wanzhou extradition hearing comes to a close. The final day saw the defense reply to arguments presented by Canadian prosecutors. This week's arguments focused on the test of double criminality, and whether Meng's alleged conduct is also a crime in Canada. The U.S. has charged Huawei's chief financial officer with fraud over allegations that she misled HSBC bank about Huawei's relationship with an Iran-based subsidiary putting the bank at risk of violating American sanctions against Iran. At the end of this phase of the hearing, the judge, Justice Heather Holmes, said she would reserve judgment. If she decides the test of double criminality has been met the hearing will continue with court dates in April, June and September already penciled in.

Along the Yangtze River: Green Development Accelerated in Yangtze River’s Upper Stream
The upper stream of the Yangtze River has seen progress in the pursuit of green and high-quality development.
In southwest China's Sichuan Province, Yibin is a city seeing the confluence of the Jinsha River and the Minjiang River, marking the start of the main waterway of the 6,397-km-long Yangtze River - the longest in China and Asia.
As a traditional industrial city, industrial transformation and upgrading is key for Yibin to achieve green development. All its industrial enterprises along the Yangtze River are undergoing demolition and relocation.
Water protection is deemed the priority of the economic development along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
The local government of Yibin City plans to relocate all the enterprises that might cause pollution to the river. In addition, the local government will invest over four billion yuan to help transform and upgrade those enterprises as well as to develop the Intelligent terminal industry, new energy vehicles and other emerging industries.
Sichuan is making progress in realizing high-quality development by innovation and accelerating industrial transformation.
In Mianyang City, the total volume of high-tech industry exceeds 170 billion yuan. In the meantime, Ziyang City became a national demonstration and development zone of transformation and upgrading along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Wuhan '6-10' Office Illegally Abducts Intellectuals
Follow us on TWITTER:
Like us on FACEBOOK:
The '6-10' Office is a Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) organization specifically established
for the persecution of Falun Gong in China.
At the end of last year, Wuhan 610 abducted several
Falun Gong practitioners who were skilled in writing.
They have been accused of using the
Internet to publish articles overseas.
They face charges including 'leaking state
secrets', and attempting to 'subvert state power'.
Authorities are intending to illegally
prosecute and sentence four of them.
On March 18, Minghui.net reported that seven intellectuals
in Wuhan were kidnapped in the last three months of 2012.
This included; Ms. Chen Gang, a teacher at Wuhan
University of Politics and Administration, with a Masters;
Ms. Cui Hai, a Drama school graduate from
Hubei Province, and former general manager of
Wuhan Chemicals Import and Export Corporation;
Chao Hu, a teacher at the Tongji Medical College;
Zhang Ruobing, an engineer at
Wuhan Optical Valley Software;
Professor Zhang Wei, at the Wuhan
University School of Art and Design;
Yan Kejian, chief economist of Agricultural
Development Bank from Hubei Province;
and Shen Xuewu, a teacher from the
Wuhan Military Economic Institute.
They were detained and tortured at a brainwashing center.
As a result, Cui Hai and Yan Kejian
suffered serious high-blood pressure.
Currently, authorities intend to prosecute
and sentence four of the abductees.
Charges include using the internet to publish
articles overseas, leaking state secrets,
and attempting to subvert state power.
Zhao Yuanming, a Chinese legal expert, points
out that many people in the world are now aware
of the CCP's brutal persecution of Falun Gong.
When Falun Gong practitioners expose the truth about
the crimes of the persecution, it has nothing to do with
leaking state secrets or subverting state power.
Zhao Yuanming: Exposing the CCP's illegal judiciary,
and the authorities crimes, are actually demanding justice.
It is a means to disclose this
to the international community.
The behavior these Falun Gong practitioners
show should be protected and encouraged.
They should not be seen as crimes
that lead to conviction and sentence.
Zhao Yuanming said that it is easy for the authorities
to give someone a bad name and then hang him.
Under CCP rule, persecution people for their words
is a very common tactic to repress Chinese citizens.
Zhao Yuanming: Especially after Jiang Zemin's reign,
various names for persecuting peoples words have appeared.
For example, if you are promoting Falun Gong,
pasting a slogan, pasing a leaflet,
or talking about it, you are subverting state power.
They are making up charges.
Zhao Yuanming points out that the CCP's persecution
of Falun Gong is completely illegal and unconstitutional.
After the 18th Party Congress, Jiang's
faction basically has left the leadership.
Yet, the CCP is still persecuting Falun Gong, which
reflects the struggles of the top levels in the CCP.
Zhao Yuanming: The Jiang faction and their agents
are unwilling to accept defeat or quit the stage of history.
They have put their evil hands into the very roots of China.
When you publish some articles on the internet,
you will be convicted. China is not ruled by law.
Jiang Zemin's policy towards Falun Gong
was to ruin them financially, destroy them
physically, and ruin their reputation.
Zhang Tianliang, a political commentator pointed out that
the CCP has lost all the support from Chinese citizens.
It is not because corruption has occurred, but because the
public has completely understood the nature of the CCP.
Zhang Tianliang: We all know the CCP has no
future and it will be off the stage of history soon.
The more people the CCP arrests
now, the more crimes it commits.
That cannot prolong its life,
but it will shorten its evil rule.
We are reminded of February 2012, when Wang Lijun,
then Director of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau,
fled to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu to seek asylum.
This further exposed the crimes of organ harvesting
from living Falun Gong practitioners in China.
In September 2012, the UN Human Rights Council,
with more than 190 countries and more than 200 representatives of human rights organizations,
strongly condemned the CCP's inhumane atrocities.
There was a call for action.

Peking University Sues Former Professor for Online Weibo Post
Follow us on TWITTER:
Like us on FACEBOOK:
A hearing for the defamation case of former Peking
University Professor Zou Hengfu took place on January 20.
Zou Hengfu is an internationally renowned economist and
a Professor of Central University of Finance and Economics.
In August 2012, a post by Professor Zou
on his Weibo alleged that the Peking University
faculty preyed on young staff at the restaurant.
He later referred to a small number of professors and deans.
In a Sina Weibo post dated August 21, 2012, Zou Hengfu
stated that Peking University deans, professors, and
chairmen preyed on the waitresses at Mengtaoyuan.
Mengtaoyuan is a restaurant on the university campus.
He added that there are too many
lustful people in Peking University.
Both Peking University and the restaurant filed
lawsuits in September against Zou Hengfu.
This was on allegation of defamation in his Weibo post.
On January 20 at 9am, Beijing Haidian
District Court conducted a public hearing.
Zou Hengfu did not appear in court, but
was represented by his defense counsel.
The two sides did not agree on mediation,
so the court will choose a sentencing date.
Zou Hengfu's lawyer, Zhu Zhengfu spoke to NTD.
One of their main defense points was that
Peking University is not an appropriate legal
body, and is not qualified to sue Zou Hengfu.
Zhu Zhengfu, defense attorney: Professor Zou
criticized some professors at Peking University.
He did not criticize the University. Professors and the
University are two different identities and legal relations.
The ones to sue Professor Zou should
be those professors, not the University.
The University was not the direct object of Professor Zou's
criticism, and thus not qualified to sue Professor Zou Hengfu.
Zhu Zhengfu's second major defense point is that the Peking
University is an administrative body, and not a civil subject.
This body does not carry a reputation.
Zhu Zhengfu: Defamation refers to private rights
in civil law, and are only enjoyed by a civil subject.
Being an administrative body, the relationship between
Peking University and a small number of professors
belongs to those managing and those managed.
Therefore, Peking University does
not enjoy the right of reputation.
Because it does not enjoy the right of
reputation, defamation is out of the question.
Zhu Zhengfu specially emphasized that Professor Zou,
as a citizen, has the right to criticize and supervise.
Zou Hengfu submitted some evidence that has been
made public, to back up his initial Weibo statement.
On the day of the hearing, Zou Hengfu issued a new post.
In this era, when China's sacred education is
being undermined by adulterous corruption and
entertainment, what an irony that Peking University
files lawsuit on behalf of those who are promiscuous.
Zhu Zhengfu says that they have submitted evidence to
the court, detailing the promiscuous lifestyle and misconduct
of those Peking University professors who were mentioned.
There is more evidence yet to be submitted.
Zhu Zhengfu: Some evidence was provided
by staff and students of Peking University.
We don't see it appropriate to present
it now, because of its complexity.
We still need time to further identify the authenticity of these
materials. That is why it is yet to be presented to the court.
During the date of the hearing, Zou Hengfu
also forwarded a 2009 article by China News.
It was entitled Former Vice-Chancellor of Peking
University: If you don't want your daughter being
molested, don't let her study her Ph.D. in China.
This former Vice President revealed information to his friend
during dinner, according to the professors around him.
The doctoral advisors have all their
writings finished by the male students.
When appropriate, they will also
recruit a couple of female students.
These female students must devote their
body to the professor to get their diploma.
He added that internal estimation by professors
showed more than 70% of female Ph.D. students
have been raped while pursuing their degrees.
Zou Hengfu is a renowned economist, who has served at
the World Bank, Shenzhen University, Wuhan University
Department of Mathematical Economics and Finance,
and Central University of Finance and Economics.
He was the first Chinese Harvard doctoratal student in
economics since the Communist took the power in 1949.
Zou Hengfu was the Head of Guanghua School of
Management at Peking University between 1998 and 2007.

Chongqing (, also US: , Chinese: [ʈʂʰʊ̌ŋ.tɕʰîŋ] (listen)), alternately romanized as Chungking, is a major city in southwest China. Administratively, it is one of China's four municipalities under the direct administration of central government (the other three are Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin), and the only such municipality in China located far away from the coast.Chongqing was a municipality during the Republic of China (ROC) administration, serving as its wartime capital during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945); during this period, Chongqing was listed as one of the world's four anti-fascist command centers, along with Washington, D.C., London and Moscow. The current municipality was recreated on 14 March 1997 to help develop the central and western parts of China. The Chongqing administrative municipality has a population of over 30 million, spread over an area the size of Austria. The city of Chongqing made of 9 urban districts has a much smaller population of 18,384,100 as of 2016 estimation. According to the 2010 census, Chongqing is the most populous Chinese municipality, and also the largest direct-controlled municipality in China, containing 26 districts, eight counties, and four autonomous counties.
The official abbreviation of the city, Yu (渝), was approved by the State Council on 18 April 1997. This abbreviation is derived from the old name of a part of the Jialing River that runs through Chongqing and feeds into the Yangtze River.
Chongqing has a significant history and culture. Being one of China's National Central Cities, it serves as the economic centre of the upstream Yangtze basin. It is a major manufacturing centre and transportation hub; a July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit described it as one of China's 13 emerging megalopolises.

Founded by the state of Shu prior to its incorporation into China, Chengdu is unique as a major Chinese settlement that has maintained its name (nearly) unchanged throughout the imperial, republican, and communist eras. It was the capital of Liu Bei's Shu during the Three Kingdoms Era, as well as several other local kingdoms during the Middle Ages.It is now one of the most important economic, financial, commercial, cultural, transportation, and communication centers in Western China. Shenzhen
Shenzhen (Chinese: 深圳) is a major city in the south of Southern China's Guangdong Province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The area became China's first—and one of the most successful—Special Economic Zones (SEZs). It currently also holds sub-provincial administrative status, with powers slightly less than a province. According to the 2010 National Census, Shenzhen is the tenth most populous city in mainland China with a population of 10.35 million.
Shenzhen's modern cityscape is the result of the vibrant economy made possible by rapid foreign investment since the institution of the policy of reform and opening establishment of the SEZ in late 1979, before which it was only a small village. Both Chinese citizens and foreign nationals have invested enormous amounts of money in the Shenzhen SEZ. More than US$30 billion in foreign investment has gone into both foreign-owned and joint ventures, at first mainly in manufacturing but more recently in the service industries as well. Shenzhen is now considered one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
