Sultan Abdul Samad Building : Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is located in front of the Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) and the Royal Selangor Club, by Jalan Raja in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Sultan Abdul Samad building was constructed in 1897 and has long been a landmark for Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur. The unique Moorish-style building has a 41m clock tower, dubbed 'Big Ben'.
The design of this building was undertaken by a British architect, A.C Norman, who worked for the Public Works Department at that time. In designing this building, he took into consideration some of the features of buildings in several Islamic countries. The predominantly Moorish appearance of the building suitably reflects the cultural background of Malaysia.
The site of this beautiful building was carefully chosen. It is conveniently located at the centre of the old mining town of Kuala Lumpur. It once served as the Colonial Secretariat office, but now houses the Supreme and High Courts.

Literally Independence Square, it was formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang or simply the Padang and was originally the cricket green of the Selangor Club (now Royal Selangor Club).
The Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which grandly overlooks the Merdeka Square, is one of the most significant landmarks built by the British. Designed by A. C. Norman who was inspired by Indian Moghul architecture, this building was completed in 1897 and housed the Selangor State Secretariat and later the Supreme Court before being abandoned for a number of years. It now houses the Ministry of Heritage, Culture and Arts.[1]
The field at the Merdeka Square's immediate vicinity was officially renamed 'Dataran Merdeka' on 1 January 1990 in conjunction of Visit Malaysia Year 1990.
Merdeka Square was the starting line of The Amazing Race Asia 1.
On August 31, 2007, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi shouted 'Merdeka!' on midnight celebrations, where thousands of Malaysians celebrated 50 years of nationhood.
Surrounding the square are many buildings of historical interest. Just beside the square is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building currently the office of the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture of Malaysia. Opposite the square is the famous Royal Selangor Club Complex built in 1884 as a meeting place for high-ranking members of the British colonial society.[3] To the South is the former National History Museum which used to house a vast collection of historical items. The collection has recently been moved to Muzium Negara. To the North is the St. Mary's Anglican Cathedral, currently the Diocese of West Malaysia and the see of the Bishop of West Malaysia.
A 95-meter flagpole, one of the tallest in the world, marks that spot with a flat, round black marble plaque. It is located at the southern end of the square.[4] Nearby is also the original Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, which is still operational. However the main hub has recently been moved to KL Sentral in 2001.
The Sultan Abdul Samad Building (Malay: Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad; Jawi: باڠونن سلطان عبدالصمد) is located in front of the Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) and the Royal Selangor Club, by Jalan Raja in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Old Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur City Gallery
Old Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur City Gallery
In 1899, during the British colonial administration, the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery building was first built to meet the administrative needs of Kuala Lumpur, the newly founded capital of the Federated Malay States. It replaced the Government Printing Office in Taiping, which was closed down. The government printer at the time, J. Russell, helped the Public Works Department architect A. C. Norman design the ideal printing office to house large printing press machines. The exterior façade was designed based on neo-Renaissance principles, with exposed bricks, plastered columns, and large semi-circular windows decorated with keystones; while the interior had a structural support system of cast iron columns and trusses. The building did not have a pronounced entrance or front porch, but just a simple door located on the western side. Canopy roofs were added above the first floor windows in the 1940s, as protection against the harsh tropical sun.
For years, the printing office produced official government reports, government books and train tickets. In 1961 the Ministry of Labour took over the building, and later in 1977, the building was converted to the Metropolitan Postal Security Office.
In 1986, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall bought the building for over RM3 million, then renovated and furnished it with quality library equipment, making it the first public library in Kuala Lumpur. The Kuala Lumpur Memorial Library, as it was named, also acted as a research centre on all things related to Kuala Lumpur – its history, administration and development, as well as exhibitions on objects and artifacts connected to the heritage of the city. After opening its doors in 1989, the library grew quickly and after three years, it made history by being the first public library in Peninsular Malaysia to go on-line.
The library was renamed the Kuala Lumpur Library in 2000, and a new annex was added on in 2004.

MUD: the Story of Kuala Lumpur which played, and stayed, for 3 years
MUD, a play about the origins of the capital city Kuala Lumpur, has entertained its last audience after being performed nearly 2,000 times at the historic Panggung Bandaraya right next to the confluence of the two rivers that gave the city its Malay name.
Panggung Bandaraya DBKL is itself a historic building at the side of the Merdeka Square. The Indo-Saracenic design building was built in 1896 with construction completed in 1904 when Kuala Lumpur was at the centre of a tin-mining boom in Selangor.
That itself was the premise for the story of Kuala Lumpur performed under the title MUD since 2014, which has entertained Malaysians of all ages and races as well as hordes of tourist nearly 2,000 times – 1,854 under contract with City Hall.
The final curtain call on April 30, 2017 was to enable a thorough renovation of the theatre for future shows in the centre of the city.

3D Buildings - The Sultan Abdul Samad Building, KL, Malaysia
The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is located in front of the Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) and the Royal Selangor Club, by Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The structure takes its name from Sultan Abdul Samad, the reigning sultan of Selangor at the time when construction began.
The building houses the offices of the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture of Malaysia (Malay: Kementerian Penerangan, Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan Malaysia). It formerly housed the superior courts of the country: the Federal Court of Malaysia, the Court of Appeals and the High Court of Malaya. The Federal Court and the Court of Appeals had shifted to the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya during the early 2000s, while the High Court of Malaya shifted to the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex in 2007.
History
It was designed by A.C. Norman and built in 1894-1897 to house several important government departments during the British administration. A.C. Norman spent time in Africa and saw Muslim mosques in India which led him to use Moorish architecture in the building's design. In 1945, when World War II ended, Britain resumed control again, but Malaya's independence movement had matured and organized itself in an alliance under Tunku Abdul Rahman. When the British flag was finally lowered in Kuala Lumpur's Merdeka Square in 1957, Tunku became the first prime minister of Malaya.
In front of the building is the Dataran Merdeka (or Merdeka Square). It was here, the Union Jack flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957. The Dataran Merdeka was officially opened on January 1, 1990, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 1990.
The Merdeka Square symbolized British sovereignty as it was a cricket ground for the colonial administrators and fronted the Royal Selangor Club, Malaya's most exclusive whites-only club.
In 1961, Abdul Rahman mooted the idea of the establishment of Malaysia, which would consist of Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, all of which had still been British colonies. The reasoning behind this was that it would allow the federal government to control and combat communist activities, especially in Singapore. It was also feared that if Singapore achieved independence, it would become a base for Chinese chauvinists to threaten Malayan sovereignty. To balance out the ethnic composition of the new nation, the other states, whose Malay and indigenous populations would cancel out the Chinese majority in Singapore, were also included.
A 95-meter flagpole, one of the tallest in the world, marks that spot with a flat, round black marble plaque. It is located at the southern end of the square.
To mark the occasion on the morning of Merdeka Day, Thousands of spectators converge on the city to watch the colourful parade along the streets of the city and performances held at the Merdeka Square. Each state will be represented, as are the many ethnic groups that comprise multiracial Malaysia. The National Flag will be flown throughout the country, at office buildings, private homes and on vehicles. State shows, competitions and exhibitions will also be held in all states. This year, Malaysia celebrates her 53rd birthday.

British Malaya (Singapore and Malaysia): 1939 Trip around the World (Part 5 of 10)
Part 5 features city scenes of Singapore, including the Old Supreme Court building. In Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur city scenes and the Penang Hill tram and Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple in Penang.
View all 10 parts:
Evelyn Reinhardt took this footage on her solo round-the-world trip in 1939. A history teacher at Southwest and later, Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, Missouri (USA), Ms. Reinhardt complemented her history lessons with stories and films (such as this) from her exotic travels to both Asia and Europe.
This particular trip satisfied Ms. Reinhardt's goal of traveling around the world before her 40th birthday. Indeed, she departed San Francisco, California on May 15, 1939 aboard the S.S. President Taft, and returned to New York, New York, aboard the S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam on September 4, 1939, twenty three days before she turned 40.
Filmed in black and white 16mm film. No audio. Regrettably, the film deteriorated significantly before it was digitized.
