Oxford Kayak Tour - Rivers Cherwell & Thames
It's an almost sunny Sunday in August and 9 kayakers take the Oxford Kayak Tour from Cutteslowe on the River Cherwell to Donnington Bridge on the River Thames. Nobody went in and nobody got whacked by a punt so all's well that ends well.

Kayaking the Oxford Floods 2014 - River Thames, UK
It's January 11, 2014 and Oxford is sinking, if not already sunk. The River Thames has burst it's banks and there is massive flooding.
What you see is 100% floodwater. This is Christchurch Meadow and it's normally parkland. The River Thames is somewhere in the background. There's even an Aussie floating around in the flotsam. G'day Ash...think we'll pass on the barbie mate...

Kayaking the River Thames in Flood - Oxford, UK 2014
It's the Monsoon Season, English style. The rains beat down, the rivers flood and the fields fill up with water. It's December 29, 2013 and the flood plains of Oxfordshire look like the Mekong Delta. All we're missing is the rice.
This was a trip on the River Thames in flood: Bablock Hythe to Northmoor Lock and back. The river had burst its banks and there was massive flooding. The half-sunken trees mark the banks of the river. We paddled against the current by keeping to the fields and paddling over sunken wire fences and hedgerows. On a few stretches we had to join the main current and paddle hard against it.
The return journey was a rapid drift down in the main flow of the Thames. It took us 2 hours to paddle upstream and 20 minutes for the return!
An amazing winter's day paddle.
Well done Lisa, first time in a kayak for 10 years.
Filmed with a GoPro Hero3.

Oxford Kayak Tour 2014 - Dodge the Punts
The sun came out and with it, a million punts.Punts, rowing boats, paddle boats, motor cruisers, Salter's Steamers and just about everything else that can float including hashtag #TheBigFloater whoever they are.
At this time of the year the river is normally slow moving but due to heavy rain earlier in the week there was quite a flow. This meant lots of punts were out of control and many were unable to punt back to Magdalen Bridge against the current. In the video you can see punts stuck against the sides of the river either in the bushes or being pulled along the bank with a rope. On a good day punts are usually all over the place but today was carnage.
Somehow, not sure how, we survived...

Oxford Kayak Tour 2014 - Rain Dance
This being a bank holiday, it rained. A lot. It started off with light rain and then, once on the Thames, it hammered down. Still, we made it, no mishaps and everyone was dryish at the end.
Well done to the group. Five novices who started to look like real kayakers by the end of the trip.
Typical English summer really. Just a shower...

Oxford in flood, 2014 - Kayaks on the Rivers Thames & Cherwell, UK
It's January 2014, the English Monsoon Season. The River Thames has burst its banks and there is massive flooding. We paddled the River Cherwell, a tributary of the River Thames through the centre of Oxford and onto the River Thames. Ace paddle.
