Quick Overview of Peanut Island, Historic JFK Bunker and Maritime Museum – Palm Beach, FL (4/1/17)
Recently learning that there was an underground bomb shelter nearby on a small island, that is open to the public, we decided to check it out on our next visit to South Florida. What we discovered is a palm-studded island with a clean, sandy beach surrounded by warm, clear, tropical Gulf Stream waters – and a really great place to spend a day picnicking, swimming, snorkeling or even camping! The man-made island was created in 1918 from materials dredged from the Lake Worth Inlet. Originally only 10 acres in size, materials subsequently added eventually increased the island's total area to its current 80 acres. The name resulted from past plans to use the island as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. There is a 1.25 mile paved walking path around the perimeter 30 acres that contain wildlife habitat with enhanced public park, a 6-acre parcel operated by the Palm Beach Maritime Museum, and an interior area that continues as dredge management for the Port. Unfortunately when making our plans to visit, we were not aware that a beautiful public park was just beyond the border bushes of historical museum area and that it was only a mile around entire island, in which case we did not allow enough time to see the full beauty of this awesome tropical paradise!

We’ll play the back nine at a place where the golf course is just as spectacular as the view, we’ll ride through a scenic bike trail on a bicycle built for two and we’ll visit a pharmacy that houses an 82-seat classic soda fountain – that’s all on this episode of On the Town in The Palm Beaches.

Snorkeling Peanut Island:
Now known as Peanut Island, this area was created in 1918 as a spoil site for the material excavated from the development of the Palm Beach Inlet. Inlet Island, as it was known back then, was only 10 acres. However, the island is now 80 acres due to continued dredging of the inlet. The name Peanut Island came from a proposed peanut oil-shipping operation in the mid '40s. Although the plans were never fulfilled, the name Peanut Island stuck to this day. In 2005, Peanut Island received a $13 million renovation which included a pier, camp sites and artificial reefs.
While most people know Peanut Island for its snorkeling and campgrounds, the island is also home to a blast shelter built for the late President John F. Kennedy shortly after his 1960 election. The former president spent many winters in Palm Beach, Florida. The Palm Beach Maritime Museum operates the bunker, which is currently open to visitors.
