Vladivostok, Russia
Vladivostok is a major Pacific port city in Russia overlooking Golden Horn Bay, near the borders with China and North Korea. It's known as a terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which links the city to Moscow in a 7-day journey. In the city center is Central Square, where a towering memorial pays tribute to local soldiers who fought Japanese forces in the early 20th century.

Kim Jong-un could visit Mariinsky Theatre, public aquarium, navy fleet headquarters
The world is keeping close tabs on the soon to take place Pyeongyang-Moscow summit.
Various media outlets report the two leaders' first face-to-face could happen on Wednesday or Thursday in Vladivostok.
Here's Oh Jung-hee with the updates.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be in Russia for three days starting this Wednesday... and may visit the ballet theatre and navy fleet headquarters.
That's according to Japan-based Kyodo News Agency, citing Russian government officials.
The agency reported... that the North's protocol chief Kim Chang-son toured around the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre, a public aquarium and Russia's Pacific Fleet headquarters -- all of which, therefore, could be visited by Kim Jong-un.
Kyodo added... that Kim will make his way to Vladivostok using a special train on Wednesday and have a dinner banquet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
On the next day, Kim and Putin will have their one-on-one meeting as well as an expanded meeting.
On Friday, before returning to Pyeongyang, the agency says Kim could meet with North Korean students and researchers in Russia... or tour around Vladivostok.
North Korea's advance team is busy checking the security in Vladivostok.
Pyeongyang's protocol chief Kim Chang-son, the deputy commander of the guard command Kim Chol-gyu and Vice Foreign Minister Im Chon-il were spotted inspecting Russia's Far Eastern Federal University.
This is where the summit is most likely to happen.
Russia's RIA Novosti agency reports... that a sign had appeared in one of the buildings that Kim Jong-un will be there.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un wrapped up his three-day visit to Russia much earlier than expected,... cancelling planned economic visits.
On Friday, Kim laid a wreath at a monument honoring Russia's unknown soldiers at noon.
He then had lunch with Primorsky Krai regional governor Oleg Kozhemyako... at a restaurant where Kim's father and the North's late former leader Kim Jong-il had visited in 2002.
Kim left from Vladivostok station at 3:30,... 7 hours earlier than scheduled.
Some of Russia's top officials including Far East Development Minister Alexander Kozlov and Vice Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov saw him off.
Kim was originally to leave Friday night after touring around Vladivostok.
He was expected to visit Russia's Pacific Navy fleet headquarters and an oceanarium on Russky island.
He was also to watch a performance at the world-renowned Mariinsky Theater.... and meet with North Korean students and researchers in Vladivostok.
But Kim cancelled all these schedules.
Experts suggest that the North Korean leader chose to return to Pyeongyang quickly,... after not gaining much from his summit with Putin.
This was Kim Jong-un's first visit to Russia, but there were no big achievements from Kim's side because there was nothing to give nor take with Putin in the first place. Russia can secure its interests by resuming the six party talks, but the North doesn't want to revive the complicated framework of six party talks -- it doesn't have time.
Observers add... that realistically it is a bit difficult for Kim to tour around Vladivostok when Russian President Putin is out of the country.
Putin left for Beijing right after meeting with Kim on Thursday, for the One Belt, One Road forum.

SOUND OF VLADIVOSTOK — Official Teaser

Founded in 1860 as a military post, Vladivostok, Russia’s gateway to Asia in the Far East, has a turn-of-the-century charm. After it had been cut off from the rest of Russia and the world for decades, to protect the Pacific Fleet, the ending of the Cold War allowed the city to open in 1992.
Ranging from the modern landmark of the city, the Zolotoy Bridge, to the tiny musician’s apartment reminiscent of Soviet era and the Tokarevsky Lighthouse at the end of the world where the land ends and the Japan Sea begins; the entire city is the scenery and the stage on which the music is performed and the city’s voice is heard.
Seasonal changes affect the acoustic and visual scenery of the city, especially from winter to spring. The project’s recordings were made in severe weather conditions of up to -15º Celsius at the frozen surface of Peter the Great Gulf and hazardous situations across the icy sea and at the prow of a moving naval vessel.
A wide variety of musicians take part, amongst others, a theremin
player, a rapper, eight conductors and 13 music groups encompassing a symphony orchestra, a brass band, Russian traditional instruments, diverse percussion ensembles and choirs. In addition, recorded sounds that represent the distinctive character of the city are harmonically incorporated into the music.

SUMMARY
=======
The Russo-Japanese War (Russian: Русско-японская война, translit. Nichirosensō / Нитиросенсо̄; 1904–05) was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria and the seas around Korea, Japan and the Yellow Sea.
Russia sought a warm-water port on the Pacific Ocean for its navy and for maritime trade. Vladivostok was operational only during the summer, whereas Port Arthur, a naval base in Liaodong Province leased to Russia by China, was operational all year. Since the end of the First Sino–Japanese War in 1895, Japan feared Russian encroachment on its plans to create a sphere of influence in Korea and Manchuria. Russia had demonstrated an expansionist policy in the Siberian Far East from the reign of Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century. Seeing Russia as a rival, Japan offered to recognize Russian dominance in Manchuria in exchange for recognition of Korea as being within the Japanese sphere of influence. Russia refused and demanded Korea north of the 39th parallel to be a neutral buffer zone between Russia and Japan. The Japanese government perceived a Russian threat to its plans for expansion into Asia and chose to go to war. After negotiations broke down in 1904, the Japanese Navy opened hostilities by attacking the Russian Eastern Fleet at Port Arthur, China, in a surprise attack.
Russia suffered multiple defeats by Japan, but Tsar Nicholas II was convinced that Russia would win and chose to remain engaged in the war; at first, to await the outcomes of certain naval battles, and later to preserve the dignity of Russia by averting a humiliating peace. Russia ignored Japan's willingness early on to agree to an armistice and rejected the idea to bring the dispute to the Arbitration Court at The Hague. The war concluded with the Treaty of Portsmouth, mediated by US President Theodore Roosevelt. The complete victory of the Japanese military surprised world observers. The consequences transformed the balance of power in East Asia, resulting in a reassessment of Japan's recent entry onto the world stage. It was the first major military victory in the modern era of an Asian power over a European one. Scholars continue to debate the historical significance of the war.

In 1942, C-56 was transferred from the Pacific Fleet to the North Theater of Military Operations. The crew of the submarine showed high combat skill and heroism, damaging four and sinking ten enemy warships and maritime transports. An interesting fact, 19 times the crew of the submarine was declared dead and each time they returned whole and unharmed. The military feats of the crew of the submarine S-56 were awarded the Order of the Red Banner, she was awarded the title of Guards.
The memorial was opened on May 9, 1975, the day of the 30th anniversary of the Victory over fascist Germany on the shore of the Golden Horn.

A note on 'Ivan the Terrible' - in Russia, Ivan IV has the epithet 'Гро́зный' meaning 'Great' or 'Formidable'. So why is he known as Ivan 'the Terrible' in English? Because he was evil or useless or because of anti-Russian bias? No, because 'Terrible' in English also means awesome or formidable - this was well understood when 'Гро́зный' was first translated into English centuries ago, but now fewer people understand this. (see definitions 3 & 4 here: The name stuck, and Ivan IV has been known as Ivan the Terrible ever since.

Kim Jong-un's armored train crosses North Korea-Russia border
We heard this morning that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is on his way to Vladivostok for his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. And a few hours ago, we were told that Kim crossed the North Korea-Russia border.
For more, let's connect to our Lee Ji-won who is on the phone for us.
Ji-won give us the details.
Ji-yoon, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's armored train, which departed early this morning,... crossed Russia's border at around 10-30 a.m. local time.
That's according to the Russian International News Agency, which cited local officials saying that the train crossed the Tumen river and pulled over at the Khasan station near the border.
Kim is said to have made a quick appearance there where he was given flowers along with 'loaf and salt' which are traditionally given to special guests in Russia.
Russia's TASS News Agency cited a local lawmaker to report that Kim is expected to have looked around the museum Kim Il-sung's House, which was built near the station in 1986, honoring Kim Jong-un's late grandfather Kim Il-sung's visit to the Soviet Union.
The report added, that the train is then to travel further northeast to Ussuriysk, which is a roughly 7-hour journey. From there, the train is to go 70 kilometers south for another 2 hours to finally arrive in Vladivostok.
Now, according to local reports, Kim's expected arrival time in Vladivostok is between 4 and 5 p.m. today,... which would be 3-to-4 p.m. for us here in Korea.
Ji-won we also hear that the schedule for Kim-Putin summit has finally been released?
Yes Ji-yoon. The Kremlin's presidential aide ( )Yuri Ushakov told reporters Tuesday, that the summit will be held in Vladivostok on Thursday.
Their meeting will start with a one-on-one sitdown, followed by an expanded talk between the respective delegations,... which will not result in the leaders signing any agreements or making a joint statement.
Ushakov also said the discussions on the political and diplomatic solution regarding the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula would be the main focus of their meeting.
Now, while the specific venue has not yet been disclosed, various reports suggest the first Pyeongyang-Moscow summit in eight years will take place at the Far Eastern Federal University, located on Russky island off the coast of Vladivostok.
Before and after the summit, we are also expecting Kim to tour around places that his father had visited 8 years ago... and possibly visit the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre, a public aquarium and Russia's Pacific Fleet headquarters before heading back home on Friday.
Back to you Ji-yoon.

Pyeongyang confirms Kim Jong-un will soon meet with Putin for summit talks
North Korea announced this morning that its leader Kim Jong-un will visit Russia and have a summit with President Vladimir Putin.
For more let's connect to our unification ministry correspondent Oh Jung-hee, who's joining us on the line.
Jung-hee, tell us more.
Sure, Mark.
Pyeongyang's state-run Korean Central News Agency released a report this morning that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will soon visit Russia on the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It added that there will be a summit between Kim and Putin.
But the report did not provide details about when and where the summit will happen.
Pyeongyang's announcement on the summit comes at the same time as a confirmation from the Kremlin -- that Kim and Putin will meet by the end of April.
The upcoming Pyeongyang-Moscow summit is the first of its kind in eight years.
In 2011, Kim's late father and the former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il met with then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Though the announcements from both North Korea and Russia have not provided us with the details of when and where the summit will happen,... we do have some sort of an idea.
And we've also seen North Korea's advance team getting ready for the summit on the ground.
Tell us more about that.
That's right Mark, North Korea's advance team led by Pyeongyang's protocol chief Kim Chang-son has been spotted checking Vladivostok since last week.
And seeing where they've been visiting,... various media outlets are reporting right now that the Kim-Putin summit will take place at the Far Eastern Federal University, located on Russky island off the coast of Vladivostok.
NK News reports that preparations are underway there with the flags of North Korea and Russia lined up in one of the buildings.
Reports say Kim Jong-un will be heading over to Russia's Vladivostok using his special train on Wednesday.
And Kim will be staying in Russia until Friday... even though President Putin will leave the country on Friday for a One Belt, One Road summit in China.
Kim will tour around the city, visiting where his father had visited 8 years ago... and plus, possibly, the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre, a public aquarium and Russia's Pacific Fleet headquarters according to Japan-based Kyodo News Agency.
Mark.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Pacific War, sometimes called the Asia–Pacific War, was the theater of World War II that was fought in the Pacific and Asia. It was fought over a vast area that included the Pacific Ocean and islands, the South West Pacific, South-East Asia, and in China (including the 1945 Soviet–Japanese conflict).
The Second Sino-Japanese War between the Empire of Japan and the Republic of China had been in progress since 7 July 1937, with hostilities dating back as far as 19 September 1931 with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria. However, it is more widely accepted that the Pacific War itself began on 7/8 December 1941, when the Japanese invaded Thailand and attacked the British colonies of Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong as well as the United States military and naval bases in Hawaii, Wake Island, Guam and the Philippines. The Pacific War saw the Allies pitted against Japan, the latter aided by Thailand and to a lesser extent by the Axis allied Germany and Italy. The war culminated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and other large aerial bomb attacks by the Allies, accompanied by the Soviet declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria on 9 August 1945, resulting in the Japanese announcement of intent to surrender on 15 August 1945. The formal surrender of Japan ceremony took place aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. After the war, Japan lost all rights and titles to its former possessions in Asia and the Pacific, and its sovereignty was limited to the four main home islands. Japan's Shinto Emperor relinquished much of his authority and his divine status through the Shinto Directive in order to pave the way for extensive cultural and political reforms.
