The Carretera Austral is a 1200km long road in the south of Chile which connects the most remote areas of the country. The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region.
Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After finishing this adventure in the last episode we wanted to get to El Chaltén in Argentina with a visit to the O’Higgins Glacier and an overnight stay at the Farm Candelario Mancilla.
To do the border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chaltén one first needs to take a boat to cross the O’Higgins lake and get to Candelario Mancilla on the other side. We opted in for the additional boat excursion to see the O’Higgins Glacier and have some whisky with ice from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
The next stretch we needed to hike for 22km to Laguna del Desierto where we took another boat to cross over to the southern shore where we spend the night camping before hitchhiking the remaining 37km to El Chaltén.
El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike.
This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 2 boat, 1 bus and one car - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in el Chalten:
- O'Higgins Glacier / Bernardo O’Higgins National Park
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Candelario Mancilla
- Villa O'Higgins
- O’Higgins Lake / Lago O’Higgins or Lago San Martin
- Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre
- Monte Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres / laguna sucia
- Lago del Desierto
- El Chalten
Boat company at Lago O’Higgins (transfer Candelario Mancilla & O’Higgins Glacier):
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will hike the Huemul Circuit in El Chalten, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way.

US conservationist, Chile sign creation of national parks
(29 Jan 2018) Chilean President Michelle Bachelet signed decrees Monday creating vast new national parks using lands donated by a U.S. conservation organization in what is believed to be the largest private donation of land ever from a private entity to a country.
The decrees signed by Bachelet and Tompkins Conservation CEO Kristine McDivitt Tompkins will create Pumalin and Patagonia National Parks, while expanding others.
That will help create what they call a Route of Parks that span more than 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) across the South American nation, stretching from Puerto Montt to Cape Horn.
In all, the plan ultimately seeks to increase Chile's national parkland by more than 15,600 square miles (40,400 square kilometers).
Bachelet said that would expand national parklands in Chile by 38.5 percent.
Tompkins Conservation said the area that will be protected is three times the size of the United States' Yosemite and Yellowstone national parks combined, or about the size of Switzerland.

Crossing the Andes via the lakes route - Chile to Argentia
From Puerto Montt in Southern Chile, we travel by road and 3 lake crossings to Barilochie in Argentina. A most scenic and relaxing way to cross the Andes.
The journey was part of a longer trip through Chile and Argentina in January / February 1996, and organised by Ffestiniog Travel.
See related videos for Patagonian Express and others from this trip to South America.

At the fabled ‘edge of the world’ the natural wonders of Patagonia await. This last frontier of South America slopes down from The Andes towards Antarctica.
This is a land of legendary beauty, where Mother Nature runs the show. Prepare to feel dwarfed by mighty volcanoes, towering glaciers and floating icebergs.
On the Argentinean side, a relaxing day trip takes you from sleepy San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura. Simply follow the scenic Road of the 7 Lakes, taking in two national parks. This will bring you to San Carlos de Bariloche, a popular mountain resort on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi.
Take a detour along the famous Ruta 40 to the town of El Chaltén: Argentina’s trekking capital in the southern Andes. Hike to the idyllic Laguna Capri or higher lookout points to gaze up at Fitz Roy mountain. View the jagged peaks of Cerro Torre, which few dare to climb.
El Calafate is nestled on the southern shores of Lago Argentino, the gateway lake to Los Glaciares National Park. Embark on an epic journey to the world’s third-largest freshwater reserve: the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Board the 'End of the World Train’ to Tierra del Fuego National Park or join a cruise along the Beagle Channel, to experience Antarctica without actually going there.
On the Chilean side, you can find fascinating historic and cultural attractions in pretty colonial cities, such as the regional capital Punta Arenas.
On your way north, take a detour to the Milodón cave. This prehistoric shelter held the remains of a giant ground-dwelling sloth and other huge extinct species.
The dramatic national park of Torres del Paine is brimming with lakes that spill out into gorgeous waterfalls, such as Salto Grande.
Spot the spectacular outline of the Osorno Volcano, the focal point of Los Lagos, the lake region that forms the northern border of Chilean Patagonia.
This magical wilderness at the far edge of the world reminds us that we are just temporary spectators of nature’s infinite beauty.

Breaking News - Chile unveils huge Patagonia hiking route
Chile unveils Patagonian Route of Parks hiking trail
Chile has launched a huge hiking route through its Patagonian wilderness to boost tourism and highlight the need for conservation. The Route of Parks covers 2,800km (1,740 miles) from the city of Puerto Montt down to Cape Horn. The trail was the idea of Tompkins Conservation, the foundation set up by US billionaire Douglas Tompkins and his wife Kristine. Last year the foundation donated vast amounts of land to Chile's government. The land has helped create a network of 17 national parks and the new route - called the Patagonian Route of Parks - connects all of them.
We want Chile to be internationally recognised for having the most spectacular scenic route in the world, and thus become a benchmark for economic development based on conservation, said Carolina Morgado, executive director at Tompkins.A website for the new trail says it encompasses three existing hiking routes - the Southern Way, the Patagonian channels and the End of the World Route. The sparsely inhabited terrain is known for its lakes, waterways and rich habitat of flora and fauna.
The website includes advice on transport, accommodation and more than 50 GPS-traced paths.Mr Tompkins, a keen conservationist and the founder of North Face clothing, died in a kayaking accident in Chile in 2015. The businessman had bought up huge swathes of land in southern Chile and Argentina to preserve it.His widow, Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, signed an agreement with the national government in March 2017, donating the land with the intention of creating a network of national parks roughly the size of Switzerland.
Then Chilean President Michelle Bachelet called the signing an unprecedented preservation effort. The foundation described it as the largest land donation in history from a private entity to a country.Other famous long-distance hiking trails

Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. But for the first stretch from Puerto Montt to Chaiten we chose public transport as you need to take 3 ferries to cross through the Fjords. The landscape with its fjords and temperate rainforests around the national parks of pumalin and hornopiren is stunning and reminded me of scandinavia.
Chaitén, once destroyed by a volcano was our first stop. We explored the city and I was surprised how it came back to live after my last visit 3 years ago - a lot of restaurants and shops opened and tourism is increasing with tours to the nearby volcano and to the Pumalin park.
On the next day we got up early, headed out of town and started hitchhiking. After just about 20 minutes we got our first ride which took us to Villa Santa Lucia where we got stuck as there were many like minded adventurers. Shortly before we gave up we got lucky again and got a lift to La Junta where we stayed for the night.
Another day of waiting, only a few cars passed us that day until..after about 6h…a big truck pulled over and offered to take us - we climbed into the back where a party was going on with a bunch of other hitchhikers who got picked up along the way. This ride from La Junta to Puyuhuapi turned out to be one of the most memorable hitchhiking experiences I’ve ever had.
Puyhuapi was our base for 3 days as we wanted to explore the nearby paqrque nacional Queulat with its impressive hanging glacier Queulat. The park is located 20km out of Puyuhuapi. This time Sergio who is the park ranger at Queulat gave us a ride and told us more details about the famous hanging glacier. With this early arrival we were the first to hike up to the viewpoint to get the best view of the glacier - simply overwhelming!
This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using the local buses and altogether 5 rides via hitchhiking - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:
- Puerto Montt
- Hornopiren
- Pumalin Park
- Chaiten
- Villa Santa Lucia
- La Junta
- Puyuhuapi
- Queulat National Park / Parque Nacional Queulat
- Queulat Glacier / ventisquero queulat (colgante)
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episodes we will Hitchhike the central part of the Carretera Austral, trek through the most impressive mountain ranges, ice hike over the glaciers of the southern Patagonian Icefield and meet impressive characters along the way.

Hiking at Osorno Volcano, Lake District Patagonia, Chile
By hiking we will enjoy this exciting and photographic eco-tour takes you to the Osorno Volcano area, Petrohue waterfall and All Saint Lake in the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park , which is part of the Temperate Rainforests of the Austral Andes and it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO In 2007 in Laker District Patagonia Chile.
Chile
Chile's long, slender silhouette stretches some 4269 kilometers/2,653 miles from the tropics of the north down into Patagonia and the icy fingertip of the continent.
The country encompasses such diversity of geology and terrains that it holds a special appeal for nature lovers and adventurers. Immense ice fields and glaciers combine with the surreal granite spires of Torres Del Paine in Patagonia. The driest spot on earth, the Atacama Desert is home to fantastic moon-like topography, geysers, sculpted dunes and flamingo lagoons. The Altiplano is freckled with lakes, marshes, salt flats, geysers, and 6,096-meter/20,000-foot volcanoes. The dazzling lakes and snowcapped volcanoes of the Lake District; and the hot springs, glaciers and temperate forests of the Carretera Austral invite exploration. The Magellan Strait opens to the wildlife lands of Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn. Some 3,701 kilometers/2,300 miles offshore await the mysteries of the giant stone heads, moais, of Easter Island. In a beautiful valley surrounded by snowy Andean peaks, sophisticated Santiago is a wonderful base for exploring the country's famous wine estates. Chile welcomes the connoisseur -- be that of wines or mountaintops.

Sail through Patagonia
In 2010 I joined Milo Dahlmann as crew on Artemisia II, a 32 feet sailboat, on her way to Antartica from Sweden and back. I was on board during the sail through Patagonia, from Valdivia and Ushuaia. This is the film from that trip with footage from anchorages (caletas) and channels and all the beauty of the landscape. The films and phots has been waiting to be put together for eight years, but now it is done and I hope it can be of some guidance witch includes some lessons learned, suggestions and tips. In Patagonia I suspect the changes are slow so most of the information should be valid today as well. Welcome on board!
Don't Visit Chile before You Watch This
Chile is a sinewy sliver of a nation, isolated from the rest of South America (and indeed the world) by the soaring Andes to the east, the vast Pacific Ocean to the west, the bone-dry Atacama Desert up north and the impenetrable wilds of Patagonia down south. From its disparate extremes to the ever-trendier capital of Santiago at its heart, the country’s citizens will unite in 2018 to mark 200 years of independence. Thanks to new non-stop flights from both London and Melbourne, it’s never been easier to catch a plane, raise a glass of pisco sour and toast the celebration.
1. Santiago-Chile
Santiago is one of those metropolitan joys where the more you look, the more you find. Funky cafes and dance clubs dot Bellavista, Forest Park art collections range from pre-Columbian to contemporary, and architecture runs the gamut from the 16th-century San Francisco Church to mirrored office towers. Shop with the locals at Mall Panora¡mico and give your palate meals to remember with hearty Chilean fare.
2. Easter Island
Located in the South Pacific more than 2,000 miles off the Chilean coast, Easter Island’s not the easiest place to reach. (If you’re interested, the easiest access is by air from Santiago or Tahiti.) But isolation has helped preserve the 1,500-year-old mysterious congregation of volcanic rock sculptures (maoi) that’s the island’s biggest claim to fame. After exploring the unique landscape, relax on an uncrowded beach and ponder one of the most mysterious places on Earth.
3. San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Looking for an unusual and beautiful landscape? Sandstone canyons, flamingo-dotted salt flats, steaming geysers, hot springs, volcanic peaks and alien-looking rock formations are on offer all around San Pedro de Atacama. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are the preferred means of exploration. Death Valley here is surprisingly great for picnics.
4.Puerto Natales, Chile
Proximity to the stunning Torres del Paine National Park makes Puerto Natales a gateway to adventure. It’s the best place to stock up on supplies and get your gear in order before you hop a two-hour bus ride to the park. This is an area for nature lovers, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, sailing and exploring.
5.Puerto Varas, Chile
Explore lovely, compact Puerto Varas on foot, the best way to take in views of Osorno Volcano and the wooden colonial homes built by German immigrants in the early 1900s. Several are designated as national monuments. Located on the shores of Lago Llanquihue, Chile's second-largest lake, the village is the low-key antidote to the Lake District metropolis of Puerto Montt and serves as a jumping off point for fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and sea kayaking excursions.
Plan your trip to Puerto Varas
6. Pucon-Chile
Deep in the Patagonian Andes, Pucon is a picture perfect town accessed by plane in summer or by a nine-hour drive or train ride from Santiago. A great base for adventure vacations, Pucon is crammed with visitors during summer months December, January and February. Watch molten magma ooze down Mount Villarrica, hop between hot and cold thermal pools at Termas Geometricas or take the reigns of Criollo horses to explore the Andes on horseback. For other expeditions, rent a car or mountain bike.
7. Isla Chiloe, Los Lagos Region
Although it's only a 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches clustered around Castro on the island's east coast have UNESCO World Heritage status, and traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. To the west, Chiloe National Park shelters foxes, sea lions and otters and provides unspoiled terrain for horseback riding, sea kayaking and fishing.
8. valparaiso-Chile
Only 70 miles northwest of capital Santiago, Valparaiso is Chile's main port and known for its bohemian, artistic vibe and lovely vistas. Its UNESCO-designated historic downtown offers charming colonial architecture, great seafood restaurants, markets and stores. Take 100-year-old funicular Ascensor Artilleria or climb Cerro Concepcion for stunning ocean and city views. Back at street level, visit writer Pablo Neruda's house.
9. punta arenas
Overlooking the Strait of Magellan, this isolated city in southern Patagonia bustles with windswept trekkers en route to glacier-filled Torres del Paine National Park or an Antarctic cruise.
