Pennsylvania: Hershey, Gettysburg, Lancaster PA
Traveling for a film festival, we took a trip to central Pennsylvania! WE WENT EVERYWHERE!!!! We made our own chocolate bars at the Hershey factory, ate chips fresh off the line at Utz, visited Gettysburg, learned how to make pretzels, walked all over downtown Lancaster, duck pin bowled, drank gin THAT WE LOVED at Thistle Finch, won an award at the Lancaster International Short Film Festival, and ate and ate and ate.
HISTORY FACTS: During the American Revolution, Lancaster was the capital of the United States for one day, on September 27, 1777, after the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia, which had been captured by the British. The revolutionary government then moved still farther away to York, Pennsylvania.

Distillery bringing moonshine to Jefferson Co.
Original Air Date: 3/26/14
By: WJAC Web Staff
BROOKVILLE, Pa. -- Moonshine enthusiasts in west-central Pennsylvania will have a new place to pick up a bottle or two or their hooch as a new distillery has opened in Jefferson County.
Blackbird Distillery in Brookville held their grand opening Wednesday. The location offers nine varieties of moonshine, all made on the second floor of the shop.
David and Jennifer Black opened the business after two years of planning and coordination. The distillery uses locally grown corn and honey from the Finger Lakes region in New York. Each batch is handcrafted daily.
We are a small batch, single run distillery, using just the hearts of the run to process our shine, David said. We craft our shine right from the grains to the bottles right here in Brookville, and use a corn whiskey recipe with the addition of honey to make our shine quite unique.
The distillery meets all legal requirements and has a liquor license, making it one of a few locations in the United States to hand-make everything.
We make it all by hand, every last drop, Jennifer said. Some distilleries have it shipped. That's a different license, [and] ours we make it right here from start to finish with the grains, even the labeling.
The Blacks said they plan to offer additional varieties of moonshine in the future.
We have to put down the alcohol content. It could be 102 proof, it could be 86 proof, depending on the batch because we make it every single day, Jennifer said.
The distillery, at 93 Blackout Alley, just north of Brookville, is opened Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc. Automated Warehouse Testimonial
As the producer of the No. 1 branded hamburger bun in the United States, the Chambersburg, Pennsylvania bakery experienced a significant impact from the seasonality of hamburger and hot dog roll sales throughout the summer months. The company’s current manual order preparation and fulfillment process was time consuming and labor intensive. As a result, they were struggling with space constraints in their warehouse, order fulfillment errors and employee safety and decided to turn to automation.

Immigration Reform Inertia: Dreaming for Change
On May 17, 2014 UPenn's Association of Latino Alumni and Dr. Emilio A. Parrado, Penn Professor of Sociology and Director of Latin America and Latino Studies Program, organized a panel discussion with David Bennion, Philadelphia-based immigration lawyer, and student activist, Diana Estefania Estrada-Alamo, C'15, about the need for meaningful immigration reform and the factors contributing to the lack of dialogue in Congress and elsewhere in the United States. Issues address included how this inertia impacts numerous important political and social issues, such as the voter base, the children born to immigrants, the DREAM Act, and mass deportations. This is a discussion we cannot afford to postpone or ignore. Co-sponsored by La Casa Latina and the Latino Coalition.
About the panelists:
Dr. Emilio Parrado is Director of the Latin American and Latino Studies Program as well as a professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology. In 2012 he was honored by the newspaper Impacto as one of the most influential Hispanics in the Delaware Valley for his work. The central focus of his research is migration and its interaction with other demographic and social processes. Presently he has concentrated his efforts in studying the intersection of gender, migration, and health risks among Mexican and Honduran migrants in sending areas and receiving communities in the U.S.
David Bennion has practiced immigration since 2006 and run his own private practice since 2011. A graduate of the New York University School of Law and former associate attorney at the New York office of Thompson Hine, LLP, he has been admitted to the bars of New York and Pennsylvania, the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the First, Third, and Fourth Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Besides working with organizers and activists around the country on deportation defense campaigns and blogging about immigration law at citizenorange.com, he is a member of the boards of the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition and Juntos, a community organization in Philadelphia.
Diana Estefania is a queer, undocumented, Roman Catholic, woman of color whose vocation it is to change the world. This fearless and passionate trouble-shooter was born in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, raised in Seattle, Washington and now studies in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After 13 years in the Seattle Public School System, Diana was blessed with the opportunity and challenge to take her growth to the Ivy League. Four years later, she is honored to be serving some of the most transformative agitators on the University of Pennsylvania's campus: Queer People of Color, the 5 Boards, the Bold & Exquisite Beta Epsilon Chapter de Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., Carriage Senior Honor Society, La Casa Latina Advisory Board, La Casa Latina's Mentorship Pathways Program, Lambda Alliance, Onyx Senior Honor Society, the Pennsylvania College Achievement Program, the Pennsylvania Student Equality Coalition, Sphinx Senior Society, UPenn's IvyQ Team and UPenn's Latino Ivy League Conference Delegation. For the past two years she has been determined to become a stronger advocate in Philadelphia and found her home in these efforts with GALAEI: A Queer Latin@ Social Justice Organization. Furthermore, Diana is a co-founder and active member of the Food Empowerment Education and Sustainability Team (FEEST), a Seattle-based, food justice non-profit. Academically, she is most intrigued by the issue of access to public health resources and studies this topic through the prevalence of infectious disease in (queer) communities of underserved, and underprivileged peoples.
Panel was moderated by Clemson Smith Muniz, C'79
