Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Place de l'Horloge
Places to see in ( Avignon - France ) Place de l'Horloge
Archaeological excavations have shown that here was the location of the forum of Avenio. The memory of the center of the ancient city survived everything in the Middle Ages as the medieval streets were all the doors of the old wall of the xii th and xiii th century to the square. It was then the Place du Mazel which settled the macelliers (butchers) market days. It was partly occupied by the convent of Benedictine nuns of St. Lawrence, the oldest of the city.
The first public clock and a jacquemart were installed on the tower of the old Livrée d'Albano , the new headquarters of the Hôtel de Ville, in 1471. New demolitions were made during the year 1498 to clear the place which then took the name Place du Reloge .
But on the plan of 1618 , drawn up by Marco Antonio Gandolfo, mathematician of Palermo , and engraved by Théodore Hoochstraten, of The Hague , the Place still had very reduced dimensions. In 1674 , the consuls decided on a new enlargement having noticed that the carriages were passing with great difficulty. It was followed up this municipal ordinance in 1682 , various arrangements being made following the plans of Pierre Mignard , the construction of a new slaughter.
But that was far from enough. In the middle of the xviii th century , Jean-Baptiste Frankish pitched in turn plans to enlarge the square on which it provided to both sides, symmetrical facades. Work began the slaughter Mignard being demolished and transferred street in Old Sextier , but they were abandoned by order of the consuls in 1754. They resumed in 1791. During the Terror , the guillotine was installed on the Place du October 7 , 1793 the February 3 , 1794before being moved on that of the Palace

Avignon - France-day 1C
Exploring on foot the Old Town of Avignon, main city of Provence in the south of France.
Enter the Porte du Rhône gate through the town wall then turn right at Rue Grande Fusterie, with some of its picturesque old houses from the 15th century.
At the end, turn right, then left to Place Crillon, site of an excellent hotel you might consider for your visit, Hotel d'Europe. This is four-star deluxe but has some moderately-priced rooms, especially in the off-season.
With many fine hotels in all price ranges, and strategic location, Avignon makes an excellent home base for visiting this Provençal region. Another hotel you might consider is the Mercure. It's right in the heart of town just between the bridge in the main square and it's a very comfortable three star hotel - part of the vast Accor chain of French hotels, and we found it was a very nice place. Very clean, very modern very friendly.
Stroll one block over to Rue Joseph Vernet, perhaps the prettiest street in town, lined with lovely shops, galleries and restaurants. This street is really at its best late in the day and early twilight - when you have that magical combination of streetlights, shop fronts, busy people out walking and lingering twilight in the sky. It's good . The shops stay open throughout the day, although some close in the midafternoon for a brief siesta - we're still in the south of Europe, after all. And at night stays quite lively. It's very safe spot - 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock at night, because the shop will be closed, usually by about 8 o'clock, but the restaurants, cafés and bars are open, so to be sure to pay several visits to this wonderful Rue Joseph Vernet.
Be sure to walk a few blocks up and down Rue St. Agricol, a classic side-street which offers a similar environment of pleasant shops and leads to the main square of town, Place de l'Horloge. Notice how they have iron posts to protect the pedestrians from the automobiles, because this busy street is open to traffic, and yet remains very safe because of the design. There is a rich variety of types of shops here and throught the town center.
Next, walk over to the busy main street of town, Rue de la République, where you will find the Tourist Information Office, and really the main collection of shops and people. Be sure to visit this information office and get their free Welcome to Avignon brochure with descriptions of the major sites and an extremely useful map that provides four walking routes to follow while you are exploring the city. The tourist bureau has put colored arrows on the sidewalks coordinated with the map to help keep you on track.

Avignon - France-day 1A
Home to nine popes during the 14th century and one of the most beautiful cities in France today, Avignon is a treasure house of palaces, museums and meandering lanes, surrounded by an old fortified wall that still protects it from modernization.
That is one of the beauties of a walled town in Europe: Not only did it protect the town from bandits and invaders during the Middle Ages, but in the 20th and 21st centuries the wall is protecting these historic centers from modernization. This is what the visitors want to see, and it brings in revenue for the city.
This city in the heart of beautiful Provence lays claim to dozens of historic monuments, especially the great Palace of the Popes which was gradually enlarged into an imposing fortification during the 60-year papal residency and is now a museum open to the public.
Begin your orientation with a look at the two main squares in the center of town, the Place de l'Horloge surrounded by cafes and bistros and the adjacent Place du Palais containing the city's most important and historic structure, The Palace of the Popes.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered the largest Gothic palace in all of Europe and a priority place to see in Avignon, although its original furniture is gone and the cavernous rooms are mostly empty.
There is also a wine shop inside the Palace, and if you choose not to pay admission to go see the Palace, by all means go into to the wine shop and the gift shop because their admission is free, and sometimes they have selected wine tastings in the wine bar, and it's a very good place to purchase wine.
