Karen Brown's Rosleague Manor, Letterfrack, Ireland
Welcome to Karen Brown's World of Travel
We would like to share with you one of our recommended hotels in IRELAND
The Rosleague Manor in the town of Letterfrack
Rosleague Manor is a lovely Irish hotel—a comfortable country house hotel overlooking Ballinakill Bay and an ever-changing panorama of wild Connemara countryside.
This is a quiet, sparsely populated land of steep hills, tranquil lakes, and grazing sheep, where narrow country lanes lead to little hamlets.
Manager Mark Foyle is much in evidence, making certain that guests are well taken care of.
The hotel is beautifully furnished with lovely old furniture, and the sitting rooms are cozy with their turf fires and comfortable chairs.
The garden-style conservatory is a popular place for before- or after-dinner drinks. Bedrooms are most attractive, my preference being for those with views across the gardens to the sea and distant hills.
Two particularly lovely ground floor rooms are perfect for those who have difficulty with stairs.
The dining room is my favorite room in the house: tall windows frame the view and lovely old tables and chairs are arranged in groupings.
There is an à-la-carte menu as well as the fixed-price menu that offers four or five choices for each course.
Dishes vary with the seasons and include a wide selection of locally caught fish and Connemara lamb.
This is a peaceful place to hide away and a well-located base for exploring the ruggedly beautiful countryside of Connemara.

Skellig Michael and Puffin Island
Skellig Michael and Puffin Island
When you stand here on the edge of Kerry Cliffs you are over 300 metres above the wild Atlantic below. As you take in this spectacular view and breath deep and feel the freshest of air in your lungs; your natural inclination is to turn to the west and gasp and wonder what are they? Two enormous rocks bursting out of the Atlantic in a race to the sky overhead and on some days it's a mission they accomplish. These of course are the Skellig Michael Islands. Let us speak about these Islands one at a time.
Skellig Michael
Skellig Michael is only one of three UNESCO World Heritage sites Ireland. It was awarded this accolade in 1996. The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property on the basis of cultural criteria (iii) and (iv) considering that the site is of outstanding universal value being an exceptional, and in many respects unique example of an early religious settlement deliberately sited on a pyramidal rock in the ocean, preserved because of a remarkable environment. It illustrates, as no other site can, the extremes of a Christian monasticism characterizing much of North Africa, the Near East and Europe. UNESCO WHC, 1996
Skellig Michael is a place shrouded in mystery from early history. The first references of Skellig Michael are in legend of course. The reference I speak of was the drowning of Ir during the landing of the milesians, the first Gaelic Conquerors of Ireland. There are many other references to this great rock as you can imagine.
Modern opinion is that Skellig Michael was a monastic settlement founded by St Finan which dates back to the 7th century. It was not until the 13th century that the monks vacated the island for the mainland. Ballinskelligs was the destination of choice.
The Monastic settlement where the Monks lived and prayed is still to be seen today on the Rock. One can visit the Skelligs daily from our local village in Portmagee.
Now if you turn your head to the left you will see Puffin Island
With a simplistic name worthy of an Enid Blyton novel, Puffin Island is all about Atlantic Puffins. It is home to many thousands of pairs of Manx Shearwaters, Storm Petrels and, of course, to a thriving population of colourful Atlantic Puffin. The island is an important Irish Wild bird Conservancy reserve. The island is separated from the mainland by a narrow sound, and it is this channel which causes it to be so attractive to its vast avian population. The island can only be accessed with the consent of Birdwatch Ireland who are understandably keen that visitors do not adversely disturb this extraordinary habitat in any way. Some of the ferry boats to the Skelligs, too, pass very close to Puffin Island, and visitors are treated to the dramatic sight of wild seabirds crowding the cliff faces high above them.
It is estimated that Puffin Island is home to between 5,000 and 10,000 Atlantic Puffins, and up to 20,000 Storm Petrels, not to mention its populations of Manx Shearwaters, Gannets, Guillemots, Kittiwakes, and Razorbills.

Mary’s Apparitions for the World: Knock
We speak today of a Marian Apparition to a group of parishioners in the village of Knock, Ireland in1879. Since Mary had nothing to say at Knock, I’m going to say a great deal! Knock presents a strong case that the Apparitions of Mary are interrelated, as pieces of a mosaic.
