Perugia is an Italian city and the capital of the Umbria region. It’s known for its defensive walls around the historic center. The medieval Priori Palace exhibits regional art from the 13th century onward. Looking onto Piazza IV Novembre, the Gothic cathedral houses Renaissance paintings and frescoes, In the square's center, Fontana Maggiore is a marble fountain with carvings of biblical scenes and zodiac signs.
is the capital city of both the region of Umbria in central Italy, crossed by the river Tiber, and of the province of Perugia. The city Perugia is located about 164 kilometres (102 miles) north of Rome and 148 km (92 miles) south-east of Florence. It covers a high hilltop and part of the valleys around the area. The region of Umbria is bordered by Tuscany, Lazio, and Marche. The history of Perugia goes back to the Etruscan period; Perugia was one of the main Etruscan cities. The city is also known as the universities town, with the University of Perugia founded in 1308 (about 34,000 students), the University for Foreigners (5,000 students), and some smaller colleges such the Academy of Fine Arts Pietro Vannucci (Italian: Accademia di Belle Arti Pietro Vannucci) public athenaeum founded in 1573, the Perugia University Institute of Linguistic Mediation for translators and interpreters, the Music Conservatory of Perugia, founded in 1788, and other Institutes.
Perugia is also a well-known cultural and artistic centre of Italy. The city hosts multiple annual festivals and events, e.g., the Eurochocolate Festival (October), the Umbria Jazz Festival (July), and the International Journalism Festival (in April), and is associated with multiple notable people in the arts. The famous painter Pietro Vannucci, nicknamed Perugino, was a native of Città della Pieve, near Perugia. He decorated the local Sala del Cambio with a beautiful series of frescoes; eight of his pictures can also be admired in the National Gallery of Umbria.
Perugino was the teacher of Raphael, the great Renaissance artist who produced five paintings in Perugia (today no longer in the city) and one fresco. Another famous painter, Pinturicchio, lived in Perugia. Galeazzo Alessi is the most famous architect from Perugia. The city's symbol is the griffin, which can be seen in the form of plaques and statues on buildings around the city.

L ' Etruscan Arch or of Augustus is one of the seven gates of the walls Etruscan of Perugia . It was built in the second half of the third century BC and was restored by Augustus in 40 BC after his victory in the war in Perugia . It represents the most intact and monumental of the Etruscan city gates and opens onto the cardo maximus of the city, corresponding to the current Via Ulisse Rocchi.
Augustus had besieged Perugia for seven months, around 40 BC, before the city capitulated. It was the period of the civil war between Ottaviano Augusto and Marco Antonio . The latter's brother, Lucio , had barricaded himself in the city. Perugia, at the time, was a very difficult bastion to conquer, placed on the hill and protected by the walls that connected the seven gates. Moreover, from the chronicles of Dio CassiusWe also know that Lucio's army was numerically strong and the city was well stocked with food. The siege of Perugia had its climax with the burning of the City, it is said by the advice of Caius Cestius nicknamed Macednoicus.
In the following years Perugia was returned to its splendor by the Perugians under the auspices of Caesar Augustus who in the meantime had exterminated the nobles hostile to him by replacing them, leading the city, with noble friendly families, including the most important that of the Vibi. Of the fire of 40 BC remain traces of the remains of a Roman villa found in the excavations under the cathedral of San Lorenzo, Duomo di Perugia. In the period Augusteo, in the Etruscan stones of the ancient sixth of the arch
The arch consists of a façade crossed by a single arch (that is, by a single arch) and by two trapezoidal towers. On one of the two towers a loggia was built during the Renaissance period ; the fountain at the foot of the same tower was finished building in 1621 . Above the arch (two concentric rows) there is a frieze adorned with metopes with round shields and triglyphs ; above this there is another arch between two pillars.
In the internal row we can read the writing Augusta Perusia , that is the name of the city after the reconstruction of the 40; in the outer row there is the inscription Colonia Vibia , to testify the ius coloniae received by Treboniano Gallo . In front of the arch stands Palazzo Gallenga Stuart , home of the University for Foreigners .

Places to see in ( Perugia - Italy ) Rocca Paolina
La Rocca Paolina is a fortress of the city of Perugia. It was built between 1540 and 1543 at the behest of Pope Paul III and represented, until 1860 , the symbol of papal power over the ancient city. The building, designed by Alessandro Tomassoni from Terni and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger , was built on what were the houses of the Baglioni, following their revolt against the Pope, and occupied a large part of the southern side of Perugia. For its construction the materials of the ancient village of Santa Giuliana were used, completely demolished with relative churches and convents, while the houses, streets, towers and courtyards falling within the perimeter of the new building were incorporated and covered with mighty vaults, constituting the basement.
Partly destroyed in 1848 , rebuilt in 1860 at the behest of Pope Pius IX , the Rocca was finally demolished in the decades following the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy , offering space for the construction of many buildings and nineteenth-century accommodation (piazza Italia, via Masi, Carducci gardens, Viale Indipendenza).
With such vast urban upheavals, the ancient fortress (divided into three parts: the Papal Palace, the Corridore and the Tenaglia) remained only the basement of the Papal Palace. These were finally affected by work to remove the rubble in 1932 and concluded in 1965 , opening up to the public as an underground city of great charm and charm.
Finally, since 1983 , the fortress is crossed by the mechanized pedestrian path (escalators) that from the bus station, along the extramural bypass, reaches the Etruscan acropolis. Today its large and unique spaces are used, during the year, for different cultural events.
The fortress was divided into three parts: the Papal Palace, the Corridor and the Tenaglia facing the countryside. However, the architect had the sensibility to embed the ancient Etruscan architecture called Porta Marzia in the new brick walls, which still stands on the homonymous street. The construction of the Rocca Paolina involved the demolition of about three hundred houses (the entire village of S. Giuliana), the palaces of the Baglioni family-at the time dominating the city and leader of the revolt - of various towers and churches including the fifteenth century Santa Maria dei Servi that the testimonies of the time considered the most beautiful in the city.
The Rocca Paolina with its left bulk represented until 1861 (Unification of Italy) the symbol of papal power over the ancient free commune. With the Unit the Rocca was object of systematic demolition after a first phase already happened with the motions of 1848, protracted until the end of the century, which led to the cancellation of all three parts mentioned above. Only the sixteenth century Papal Palace was replaced with the current Palazzo della Provincia, with the neighboring palaces and gardens of the nineteenth-century settlements, resting on the ancient medieval structures - built at the beginning - which existed before the fortress. It remained buried and forgotten for several decades, in 1932 saw the start of emptying works, completed in 1965. Since 1983 the Rocca Paolina is crossed by a path of escalators that connect the base.
