From Kongo To Brazil: The Portugal Connection (1)
The Portuguese Explorer Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil
in 1500, Allegedly on his way to India to get some pepper!
Pope Alexander VI (the one with 4 mistresses) had already split
newly discovered lands to the East and West of the Cape Verde Islands
between Spain and Portugal. But a more recent treaty enabled Portugal, and hence Cabral, to Christen
Brazil as the Island of True Cross and call it Portuguese
Although Cabral did not know it at the time, the Portuguese were going
to need plenty of cheap labour to farm the land for cash crops
such as coffee, cotton and sugar and to extract Brazilwood from the rainforest to supply the insatiable textile dye industry in Europe
Still, Cabral was astute enough to know that the land must have potential so he came up with a wicked plan:
Cabral set-up mass in open space and made sure that the locals
could see his ironware to marvel at, then left to India, leaving
behind two of Portugal's finest: A couple of excons previously
destined for the gallows!
Their job as their country's ambassadors was to eat, drink, learn the language
and -- most importantly -- copulate with the locals, i.e. total infiltration
(and spread civilized germs while at it)
See the video From Kongo To Brazil: The Portugal Connection Presentation for a background and the story behind this video. This is the 1st of 6 videos on the involvement of the Catholic Church and Portugal with the slave trade and how they paved the way for white supremacy, to which Nelson Mandela referred in his Rivonia address: He said that Umkhonto was formed for two reasons: (1) to prevent terrorism and (2) to fight white supremacy with acts of violence (i.e. fight violence with violence).
This series is in honour of Nelson Mandela and the UN International Mandela Day (18 July of every year).
While this video was being produced, Mandela had spent over 2 1/2 months ill at hospital, fighting for his life. We wish him full recovery, with our deep respect and admiration.

PALCUS Webinar: Columbus' Role as a Double Agent for Portugal
The untold story of Columbus, and his connections to Portugal!
MANUEL ROSA is a Portuguese-American historian and author who emigrated from the Azores to the Boston area in 1973 with his parents. He employed his early professional life as a graphic artist working on books and national magazines including The Atlantic Monthly and Boston Magazine. He is also a recipient of the 1976 Boston Globe’s Art Merit Award.
Beginning in the mid 1990s he became a leading expert in the digital artwork field and was a consultant to Prentice Hall Publishing. In the year 2000, he began a new career in IT with Lockheed Martin Corporation, contracted with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences where his professionalism and high standards of quality earned him Lockheed Martin’s Lightning Award, in 2002. He is currently employed by Duke University Medical Center.
For the last 21 years, Mr. Rosa has investigated and searched out the facts concerning the discovery of America utilizing a non-biased scientific approach that has taken him to Portugal, Spain, Dominican Republic, Poland and many places in-between in a relentless pursuit of the truth. The new information he garnered about Columbus resulted in the publishing of his first book in 2006.
His ability to speak and read in several languages (including Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and English) has enabled him to search through original documents and maps and countless books and chronicles before reaching his conclusions. He is the first historian in 500 years to present new documents related to Columbus that had been overlooked in Portugal. He participated in the DNA studies of Columbus’s bones and has been invited to present the findings of his investigations at numerous places, including Portuguese universities, the Portuguese Air Force Academy and at the prestigious Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa in 2007 and again in 2010.
On May 16 2012, his lecture at the Portuguese Academy of History, packed with nearly 200 members of the Portuguese scientific community, who described his research as “a serious look at the truth and worthy of praise.”
Mr. Rosa has appeared in various TV documentaries, on many European TV and Radio interviews as well as on BBC Radio and WNPR. His book as even been mentioned on Saturday Night Live.

Hope Care, AESE Business School, Portugal
The mai Bangkok Business Challenge @ Sasin 2013 - Finalist
Hope Care, AESE Business School, Portugal
Health without geographic barriers is what Hope Care is proposing, an idea that José Paulo Carvalho, Pedro Ferreira and Simão Calado came up with and developed in 2010 while they were doing the same MBA at AESE-IESE -- Escola de Direcção e Negócios -- Lisbon -- Portugal (Business and Management School), more precisely in New Business Ventures (NAVES) class.
Two years later, what could have been nothing more than an academic project became a real company, the benefits of which they truly believe in, promoting and holding shares in it. This was how a platform capable of monitoring life signs from a distance and providing a telehealth service came about. This platform promises to change social and health care in Portuguese society.
