Indiana Diesels Tryouts December 2, 2012 @Incrediplex in Indianapolis, Indiana
The second round of tryouts at Incrediplex in Indianapolis, Indiana.

HISTORY
The Premier Basketball League is the first exclusive basketball league purely designed for the ultimate fan experience around today's modern world.
A new kind of basketball, one in which fans come first, players and coaches are accessible and pricing is affordable. With unique league rules, domestic and international players can be followed enthusiastically from anywhere in the world, all from television and online broadcasting. In addition, these very same players and coaches around the league are known for their community programs and support.
With a strong and experienced league ownership group, the PBL seeks well-funded partners and teams from proven top-caliber organizations. The PBL has the combined horsepower to attract and sustain only the best performing talent to deliver unsurpassed excitement for both the ultimate fan value and family experience.
Overview: In 2007 the Premier Basketball League was founded by businessman Dr. Sev Hrywnak. It's Corporate Office is located at 4958 W. Irving Park Road, Suite 200 Chicago, IL 60641
Unique Opportunity: We are currently in the process of reviewing numerous cities and the demographics of these cities as the PBL approaches its fifth season with a new multi-regional approach aimed at keeping travel, one of your franchise's biggest expense low and cost effective.
Upcoming PBL 2012 Season: Each team plays a total of 20 games per season in venues ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 seats; this does not include the post-season. The PBL is proud to say that in the last four seasons of operation there has never been a situation where a home or visiting team did not show up for their scheduled game.
Desired Team Markets: Prospective teams will be located in small to medium size markets. Markets that do not have access to other professional basketball teams, allowing those markets to capture the basketball fans without having to compete with an already existing basketball presence. This small market concept also allows teams and players the ability to become fully involved in their respective communities and recognized as a reputable and fan friendly organization.

Throughout Islamic history, the mosque was the center of the community and towns formed around this pivotal building. In the West mosques are integral parts of Islamic centers that also contain teaching and community facilities.
Mosques come in all shapes and sizes; they differ from region to region based on the density of the Muslim population in a certain area. There are never any images of life or statues in mosques.

Holistic approach to a safer Indianapolis continues with new community focus from DPS
INDIANAPOLIS – Building on Mayor Greg Ballard’s call for a holistic approach to crime reduction, the Department of Public Safety today launched a new data-focused initiative to bring long-term positive change to some of Indianapolis’ most-challenged areas.
The new effort is intended to help reduce crime and improve quality of life in six focus areas within the city. It will bring community leaders and City agencies together to create an action plan to reduce criminal activity and address root-cause issues.
“Much of the crime impacting neighborhoods in cities across America stems from societal failure to address decades-old social issues,” said Mayor Ballard. “In order to make our residents and neighborhoods safer, we must holistically address issues such as poverty, lack of quality education, lack of positive mentors and mental illness. This effort will help us pinpoint the problems that are leading to criminal activity and address those issues to improve the quality of life for people living in our most challenged areas.”
The Department of Public Safety compiled crime and quality of life data from 2012 to 2014 to create this effort. Numerous non-profit and faith-based organizations, including Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF), City Mosaic, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), The Polis Center, Ten Point Coalition and United Way have stepped forward to assist by sharing data, resources and expertise for the long-term improvement of the city. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and Marion County Sheriff’s Office are also partnering with the effort.
The initial six areas-of-focus, as identified by intersection, are at West 16th Street and North Tibbs Avenue, West 29th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, West 34th Street and North Illinois Street, East 38th Street and North Sherman Drive, East New York Street and North Sherman Drive, and East 42nd Street and North Post Road.
“Crime and violence are effects, and we confront those effects every day through the work of the Department of Public Safety,” said Riggs. “We also have to deal with the causes and bring long-term change that will make Indianapolis an even better place to live for the next generation. We have citizens who deserve a better life and we need to work together as a community to address their needs.”
The first phase of the plan will see the formation of community engagement teams, which will work to assess and prioritize initial needs in the focus areas, including assistance with mental health issues and vacant housing.

Dr. Matthew Walker on Sleep for Enhancing Learning, Creativity, Immunity, and Glymphatic System
This episode features Matthew Walker, PhD, who is a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and serves as the Director of the Center for Human Sleep Science. Formerly, Dr. Walker served as a professor of psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School.
Walker's research examines the impact of sleep on human health and disease. One area of interest focuses on identifying vulnerability windows during a person's life that make them more susceptible to amyloid-beta deposition and, subsequently, Alzheimer's disease later in life.
In this episode, we discuss how sleep plays a critical role in learning and memory, in the regulation of emotions including loneliness, in the function of the immune system, preventing the formation of amyloid beta plaques in the brain and Alzheimer's disease, glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity. We also discuss how certain dietary macronutrients affect sleep, the effect of sleeping pills and alcohol on sleep, the accuracy of sleep trackers, and so much more.

SR 43 Mural to be Unveiled
A new outdoor mural will be unveiled at 4 p.m., on Thursday, November 29th, at SR 43 (North River Road) on the pylons of the US 52 Overpass. After weeks of design, planning and execution, Tippecanoe County's newest artwork is ready to be officially unveiled to the community. The new artwork is an urban influenced mural which towers alongside the Wabash River. Artists Zach Medler and Pete Brown worked with community members to paint and finish the mural. This marks the tenth work completed for the Tippecanoe Arts Federation's Mural Arts Initiative public art program. The accompanying on-site reception is free and open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
Dave Williams representing sponsor Purdue Federal Credit Union states, Purdue Federal is deeply committed to giving back to our community and helping others be successful through resp
onsibility and pride in their work. Purdue Federal is proud to be a sponsor of this great program.
Purdue Federal's generosity partnered with the tremendous assistance we received from Commissioners Murtaugh, Byers and Knochel, and INDOT leaders Alan Plunkett and Debbie Calder, have resulted in one of the largest mural undertakings in the state, reports Tetia Lee, Executive Director of the Tippecanoe Arts Federation. The size of the work in addition to the technical quality and strong narrative make this work extremely impressive.
The Mural Arts Initiative is a collaborative educational outreach program that serves area at-risk and underserved youth populations. The three primary objectives of this multi-faceted program are to: beautify community areas, visually promote the clear benefit of arts in the community, and provide life-long positive impact on all project participants.
Zach Medler is an artist from Indiana, who often features narrative scenes of daily Midwestern life, in or on the surfaces of his work. Described as Post-Regionalist and Post-Media, he exhibits his ceramics, paintings and sculptures in several galleries throughout the United States zachmedler.blogspot.com.
Pete Brown is a contemporary mixed media painter, focusing on hand-cut stencils and aerosol paint. He likes working on a variety of new and up-cycled surfaces and his work can be seen at galleries, exhibitions and markets around the Midwest and in personal collections around the world. Pete creates work that reflects his life and interests. He has created commissioned pieces for the Indianapolis International Film Festival, Harley-Davidson, the Indiana State Museum IMAX Theatre, Liberty Bottle Works, and individuals across the country. Paper Towns | John Green | TEDxIndianapolis
John Green is the New York Times bestselling author of Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, and The Fault in Our Stars. He is also the coauthor, with David Levithan, of Will Grayson, Will Grayson. He was 2006 recipient of the Michael L. Printz Award, a 2009 Edgar Award winner, and has twice been a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Green's books have been published in more than a dozen languages.
In 2007, Green and his brother Hank ceased textual communication and began to talk primarily through videoblogs posted to YouTube. The videos spawned a community of people called nerdfighters who fight for intellectualism and to decrease the overall worldwide level of suck. (Decreasing suck takes many forms: Nerdfighters have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight poverty in the developing world; they also planted thousands of trees around the world in May of 2010 to celebrate Hank's 30th birthday.)
Although they have long since resumed textual communication, the brothers continue to upload two videos a week to their YouTube channel, Vlogbrothers. Their videos have been viewed more than 200 million times, and their channel is one of the most popular in the history of online video. Green has more than 1.2 million followers.
Big Idea: The Paper Town Phenomenon
When we think of education as a school-based phenomenon, we do a disservice both to students and to the rest of us. Green argues that we should imagine education as a kind of cartography, and discuss how online communities are helping to build learning maps that will encourage students. From YouTube to tumblr to the Khan Academy, the line between education and entertainment is blurring, and as these tools reach more and more people. The youth of today are quietly becoming the best-informed, most intellectually engaged generation in world history.
Abandoned St. Mary's Mercy Hospital in Gary, Indiana
Michael Jackson was born here. The lights are on, but no one's home. Abandoned hospital that still has electric service and working lights.

Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The city is in the southeastern portion of the Chicago metropolitan area and is 25 miles from downtown Chicago. The population was 102,746 at the 2000 census, making it the fifth largest city in the state. Gary was once the second largest city in Indiana, behind Indianapolis, a position now held by Fort Wayne. It borders Lake Michigan and is best known for its large steel mills.
The city was founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation as the home for its new plant. The city was named after the lawyer and founding chairman of U.S. Steel, Elbert H. Gary.
Among U.S. cities with a population of 100,000 or more, Gary has the highest percentage of African Americans, 84% (as of the 2000 U.S. census). Gary had one of the nation's first African-American mayors, Richard G. Hatcher, and hosted the ground-breaking 1972 National Black Political Convention. At the same time, Gary suffered from many affluent and middle-class residents leaving Gary and relocating to the surrounding towns and cities. Because of the loss of jobs in the city, many people left the area altogether for regions with employment.
Abandoned Ambassador Apartments in Gary, Indiana - June 2010
Abandoned luxury apartment building in Gary, Indiana.
Scheduled for demolition sometime in 2015 :-(
Watch out for falling bricks! While lots of stuff is falling down here, the reinforced concrete structural beams and concrete subfloors are still quite intact.
These were once very nice apartments. Built in 1927 for newly arriving managers at U.S. Steel's Garyworks plant, the Ambassador Apartments were occupied and in decent condition as recently as 1985.

At the same time, Gary suffered from many affluent and middle-class residents leaving Gary and relocating to the surrounding towns and cities. Because of the loss of jobs in the city, many people left the area altogether for regions with employment.
Gary's fortunes have risen and fallen with those of the steel industry. In the 1960s, like many other American urban centers, Gary entered a downward spiral of decline. Gary's decline was brought on by the growing overseas competitiveness in the steel industry, which had caused U.S. Steel to layoff many workers from the Gary area. Crime increased, including use and trade in illegal drugs.
U.S. Steel continues to be a major steel producer, but with only a fraction of its former level of employment. While Gary has failed to reestablish a manufacturing base since its population peak, two casinos opened along the Gary lakeshore in the 1990s although this has been aggravated by the state closing of Rt.912 (Cline Ave.), an important access to the area. Today, Gary faces numerous difficulties, including unemployment, major economic problems, and a high rate of crime, though the city has made some progress in addressing these issues since the 1990s.
After celebrating its 100th year in 2006, the city of Gary finally shows evidence of rebound from years of economic depression. Many buildings that have been left vacant for years are now finally slated for demolition and development. Many new homes have been built through the HOPE VI grant from HUD. In 2009, the old town section of the city, still littered with deteriorating buildings and roads which have not been occupied or used for three decades, was featured in episode 2 of The History Channel's series Life After People, as an example of how quickly Chicago might deteriorate after human beings had vanished off of Earth, thanks largely to the effects of Lake Michigan on steel and reinforced concrete structures.
