New York City In A Day (NYC must-see) - In A Brooklyn Minute (Week 108) [HD]
RE-PUBLISHED (original date: May 24, 2012) -- --
What if you only have one day (or even just an afternoon) to explore New York City? This is the tour I would recommend!
When Margaret Briggs came up from Florida for the premiere of All's Well and Fair it was her first time in NYC. Because the film premiere celebration (yay!!!) went rather late, we got a slow start the next day and actually didn't get going until the later afternoon.
I made a mental must-see list and off we ran. This is what we managed to see and I would recommend for anyone who only has a day [not all would fit into the video]:
Brooklyn Promenade with Manhattan skyline + Statue of Liberty + Brooklyn Bridge + East River views
Street Food (Mango Flower!)
Walk across Brooklyn Bridge (w/ views of Empire State Building, Manhattan Bridge + Dumbo)
street acrobats
[City Hall]
[St. Paul's Chapel]
[9/11 Firemen Memorial]
National 9/11 Memorial and World Trade Center seen from World Financial Center
Freedom Tower
Winter Garden (World Financial Center)
Hudson River
Statue of Liberty
[Mexico Festival]
[Fort Clinton]
Battery Park with sunset views over New Jersey
Subway Ride
Chinatown
Little Italy (with Cannoli)
Times Square
East Village (St. Marks Street)
street musicians + awesome kid dancer (my dad rocks!) on Astor Place
[Tibetan dinner at Tsampa]
[Empire State Building lobby]
[beers at Lolita in Lower East Side where a woman wore the Honey Badger Don't Care shirt]
Yellow cab across the Manhattan Bridge back to Brooklyn
Phew. Yes our feet and legs were very sore the next day. We still made it to Prospect Park for some greenery and a glance at GoogaMooga before Margaret had to catch the plane home.
And if you have more a full day or 2, I'd definitely recommend going to the top of the Empire State Building, taking the Staten Island Ferry for a free ride past the Statue of Liberty and hopping on the subway out to Coney Island.
Of course, don't forget to eat: an Everything Bagel, a pizza slice and a piece of cheesecake from Junior's (Brooklyn) or Ferrara (Little Italy). Drinking cocktails at Angel Share, beer at Motor City or singing Karaoke at the Manhattan Inn are optional.
The soulful groovy song is called Soulwalk by The Mirrors (Jason Matherne's band).

Mayor de Blasio Announces NYC Municipal ID to Give Access to 33 City Cultural Institutions
Announces NYC Municipal ID to Give Access to 1-Year Free Memberships at 33 of the City's Most Acclaimed Cultural Institutions
See full list of CIG benefits here:
With the Municipal ID card, thousands of residents will be able to receive free benefits at members of the Cultural Institutions Group throughout 2015
Today, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the City’s Municipal ID, which will launch in January 2015, will give all ID card holders access to one-year free membership packages at 33 of the City’s leading cultural institutions, including world class museums, performing arts centers, concert halls, botanical gardens, and zoos in all five boroughs. The Municipal ID/CIG one-year membership will be comparable to each institution’s standard one-year individual or family membership package, depending on the institution, and will give ID card holders a range of benefits including free admission, and access to special events, and discounts to museum shops.
The 33 institutions belong to the Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) which is comprised of private nonprofit cultural organizations located on City owned property. The first member of the CIG, the American Museum of Natural History, was created in 1869 and the group has grown to include a diverse cross section of institutions in each of the boroughs. The City provides capital, operating and energy support to CIG members and in turn each institution is charged with providing access to cultural services and programming to all New Yorkers.
The offer will be available to all Municipal ID holders from the day the program is launched in January 2015 through December 31, 2015. The membership term will be for one-year from the date the individual signs up with a participating cultural institution. The framework for the CIG membership deal came together with the support of City Council after Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl was appointed earlier this year. As a former director of a CIG institution, Commissioner Finkelpearl was able work closely with CIG chair Arnold Lehman and the organizations’ leadership in finding a creative and compelling strategy for CIG member institutions to open their doors even further to all New Yorkers. The package of benefits the CIG has developed demonstrates the central role these institutions play in New York’s civic life.
The 33 participating institutions are listed below by borough:
Bronx
1. Bronx County Historical Society
2. Bronx Museum of the Arts
3. New York Botanical Garden
4. Wave Hill
5. Wildlife Conservation Society (includes Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, and Prospect Park Zoo)

10 Controversial Missing Persons Cases
There are many adjectives that can be used to describe missing person’s cases: sad, mysterious, tragic, baffling. However, you could also add the word “controversial” to that list. When a person disappears, that can sometimes only be the tip of the iceberg in a complicated and bizarre story.

First Person: Jason Stanley in Conversation with Peter Beinart
As a professor of philosophy at Yale, a scholar of propaganda, and the child of World War II Jewish Refugees, Jason Stanley understands how democratic societies can be vulnerable to fascism. Alarmed by the pervasive rise of fascist tactics both at home and around the globe, Stanley set out to analyze the language and beliefs that separate people into an “us” and a “them.” In his new book, How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them, Stanley knits together reflections on history, philosophy, sociology, and critical race theory with stories from contemporary Hungary, Poland, India, Myanmar, and the United States, among other nations.
In a fascinating First Person conversation, Stanley spoke with journalist Peter Beinart on April 1, 2019 at the Center for Jewish History about the ten pillars of fascist politics, the recurring patterns he sees, and how his own family history influences his world view today.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
Presented by: Center for Jewish History, the Leo Baeck Institute and the American Jewish Historical Society

Allan Wexler: Absurd Thinking, Between Art and Design
Allan Wexler has worked in the fields of architecture, design, and fine art for 45 years. He is represented by the Ronald Feldman Gallery in New York City and has exhibited, taught, and lectured internationally. Wexler’s career resists easy classification. In the late 1960s he was an early member of a group of architects and artists who questioned the perceived divide between art and the design disciplines. They called themselves non-architects or paper architects. The subject of Wexler’s work is the built environment, and he creates drawings, multimedia objects, images, and installations that alter perceptions of domestic activities. He investigates eating, bathing, sitting, and socializing, and turns these everyday activities into ritual and theater. Wexler is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (2016), is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, and a winner of both a Chrysler Award for Design Innovation and the Henry J. Leir Prize from the Jewish Museum. He has had numerous national and international solo exhibitions, has lectured on his work internationally, and has been reviewed by major art and architecture publications. Wexler currently teaches at Parsons School of Design in New York City.
This lecture coincides with the publication of Wexler’s Absurd Thinking, Between Art and Design, a new monograph edited by Ashley Simone and published by Lars Müller.
