Staying in the Jungle on a Rural Costa Rica Island ????????
This week I stay in the jungle on a rural island in Southern Costa Rica called Isla Violin. There are only a few small families in all of Isla Violin, no stores, no markets... Just wildlife and pure nature. I'm volunteering via Worldpackers, a platform that connects hosts with volunteers and travelers who want to offer their skills in exchange for a place to stay and new experiences. Today I fly to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, and then make my way South to Isla Violin by taking two busses and two small boats to get to the island.
Use Worldpackers to volunteer and travel!

Exploring Costa Rica | Tortuguero, Monteverde & Manuel Antonio
Costa Rica was unlike any other place I'd been. The rainforest was so dense, the cloud forest SO stunning, and the beach was gorgeous, minus the monkeys who tried to steal the boys' toys and I'm convinced were planning to eat us ;) We loved every bit of it and will no doubt be back to explore even more.
We booked our trip through Costa Rica Expeditions, and they couldn't have created a more tailored, thoughtful itinerary for our kids and us. I can not recommend them enough for your next adventure ????:

When to visit:
The Green Sea and Hawksbill turtle's nesting season runs from July to October with the peak in August, and the Leatherback turtles nest from February to April. It is possible to see individual turtles at any time of the year.
The weather in Tortuguero National Park should not be much of a consideration when deciding when to visit. It rains here all the time, and the peak nesting season is in the rainy season when Caribbean rains can blow in on a north wind and stay for weeks. This is one of the rainiest areas of Costa Rica, and even in the dry season afternoon showers are common.
Tortuguero National Park is a National Park within the Tortuguero Conservation Area. The reserve is also included in the Humedal Caribe Noreste, a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The park is located in the Limon Province of northeastern Costa Rica. It is the third-most visited park in Costa Rica, despite the fact that it can be reached only by airplane or boat.
The park has incredible biological variety, due to the existence within the reserve of eleven different habitats, including rainforest, swamps, beaches, and lagoons. It is located in a tropical climate, is very humid, and receives up to 250 inches (6,400 mm) of rain a year.

Monteverde Costa Rica - Canopy Tour - Cloud Forest - Zip Line - GoPro Hero4
Part of our trip to Monteverde, Costa Rica shot on my GoPro Hero4 Silver in 1080p / 60fps.
We decided upon Selvatura Park in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Of all the tours they offer we chose the Canopy Tour which included zip lines and a Tarzan swing at the end. My daughter and I also paid a few dollars extra for the Superman zip line on the very last line. What an experience. I was going to GoPro it, but wouldn't have been able to hold on to it... bummer.
The Cloud Forest and suspension bridges were awesome too, you're walking across treetops, the lush green forest around you, incredible.
The staff at Selvatura in Monteverde, Costa Rica was AWESOME! My son got a little bit nervous after going down the first zip line so they sent a guide up just for him to go down with. Great group of people, awesome Park, and very reasonable pricing. Highly recommend.

Miss Junie's Lodge, Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuguero.... IS... AMAZING!
What an honour it was to produce this video for Miss Junie’s Lodge, the first and longest standing restaurant in Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Miss Junie’s family have long been the backbone in the Tortuguero village and have been supplying delicious Caribbean dishes to the earliest of turtle biologists since then 1950’s. Accessible only via plane or boat this makes Tortuguero one of the most remote places in Costa Rica. In the 1950s when Dr. Archie Carr, then a young graduate professor at the University of Florida, made his first trips to the Caribbean in search of answers to his many questions about sea turtles, even the most basic facts about the life history of sea turtles were unknown. No one knew, for instance, that green turtles take up to 50 years to reach sexual maturity or that females likely return to the same beach where they were hatched to deposit their own eggs. The Tortuguero National Park is one of the most varied parks boasting high rainforests to marshy lands, long stretches of beach, wide open canals perfect for crocodile spotting, and is also one of the most important breeding grounds for the Green Sea Turtle ON EARTH! The wildlife here is rich and diverse with unusually large populations of monkeys, birds and fish. It's been amazing learning from the most historic families here, about the animals, culture and history that exist in this proper PURA VIDA oasis.
One thing that we're definitely bring back to Australia is the delicious homemade coconut candy recipe made from scratch!
We hope you enjoy this video, as much as we enjoyed making it, and please, if you like our videos, don’t forget to hit the like and share buttons! #puravida
The Costa Rica Adventure 2015 (Condensed)
Full Version:
Filmed From: June 6th - June 14th, 2015
In March 2014, my Honors Chemistry teacher announced he was sponsoring an EF Tours trip to Costa Rica during the summer of 2015. I signed up for the trip! Nick & Jason were also able to sign up since that teacher is their bowling coach.
This was an amazing experience. Unlike any trip I've ever been on before. 16 people from my high school and 16 people from another high school made up our group, but by the end, it was amazing for all of us.
Our Itinerary:
Day 1 - Get settled in the hotel / explore a shopping mall in San Jose.
Day 2 - Travel to Tortuguero and explore Tortuguero village.
Day 3 - Boat tours in Tortuguero.
Day 4 - Travel to Sarapiqui for a chocolate plantation and night time rain forest hike.
Day 5 - Zip lining, white water rafting, and visit the resort hot springs in the Arenal Region.
Day 6 - Kayaking trip, visit La Fortuna waterfall, and go on a hike.
Day 7 - Move to Guanacasta for a volcanic hike and the beach.
Day 8 - Snorkeling in the morning, lunch at a ranch, and packing up.
Day 9 - We came home!
It was an amazing experience.
