Champions Cup: Clermont trionfa nel segno di Ezeala
Il giovane trequarti ala, al debutto europeo, segna una doppietta e offre un assist per stendere Bath al Recreation Ground

Samuel Ezeala ha debuttato due volte. Il suo debutto tout court non è stato dei migliori, per usare un eufemismo: a gennaio del 2018 è stato letteralmente travolto da Virimi Vakatawa in un Racing 92-Clermont, finendo svenuto in campo e immediatamente trasportato in ospedale. L’infortunio, complice una pessima tecnica di placcaggio dell’allora 18enne, non ha comunque arrestato la sua carriera. Tornato a essere una promessa dei gialloblu, Ezeala ha disputato ieri la sua prima partita di Champions Cup. E ha firmato il suo secondo debutto con una prestazione da migliore in campo.
Andiamo con ordine: Bath e Clermont si affrontavano al Recreation Ground entrambe con la necessità di fare risultato. Gli inglesi dovevano reagire alle due sconfitte subite nelle prime due giornate ad opera di Ulster e Harlequins, i francesi tornare alla vittoria dopo essere caduti proprio contro gli irlandesi per tornare a battagliare per la qualificazione ai quarti. A loro era affidata l’overture di questa terza giornata di Champions Cup, e non hanno deluso le aspettative, dando vita a un match vibrante nonostante un campo di Bath veramente rovinato e malmesso.
I padroni di casa sono voluti partire forte, mettendo alle corde gli avversari in termini di possesso e territorio in tutta la prima frazione di gioco. Grande intensità, ritmo alto e qualche rischio sembravano premiare Bath, che è stato il primo a segnare grazie a Rhys Priestland, meta e trasformazione, ma che si è poi incagliato in qualche errore gestuale di troppo.
Clermont ha inizialmente concesso molto in termini di disciplina, ma da grande squadra ha saputo pareggiare i conti nonostante la sofferenza del primo quarto di partita: è stato George Moala a segnare la meta del pareggio al 26′, con Parra bravo a centrare la trasformazione e a portare l’incontro sul 7-7 che avrebbe chiuso il primo tempo.
La ripresa è stata invece appannaggio del Clermont, e Samuel Ezeala ne è uscito fuori come protagonista: con il punteggio di 10-13 scandito da un piazzato di Priestland e due di Laidlaw, entrato per Parra alla mezz’ora, il giovane trequarti ha firmato l’ultimo quarto d’ora di gioco, che ha permesso a Clermont di portare a casa ben 5 punti dalla trasferta in Inghilterra.
Ezeala ha prima segnato al 65′, quindi offerto sull’azione immediatamente consecutiva al restart un grande assist dopo ottima azione personale per la meta di Alexandre Lapandry, infine chiuso i conti al 72′ con la doppietta personale. A niente è servita la meta di Jonathan Joseph a cinque dal termine, quando oramai la gara era ipotecata: 34-17 il risultato finale.
