MASSIVE Topwater Snook Fishing
In this episode of BlacktipH, I meet up with my friend Ryan Nitz to fish the backcountry mangroves for giant snook using topwater lures. We started sight casting these giant fish with live mullet. The fish were aggressively feeding on the surface! After hooking a few with live bait, we decided to switch to topwater lures. The first snook Ryan pitched at destroyed the lure, and from then on the rest of the day was incredible! Almost every snook we spotted and threw at tried to eat our lures.

*GRAPHIC* SHARK BITES SPEARFISHERMAN IN FLORIDA KEYS
Check out our new video from a few recent trips!
Follow me @parketsimon on Instagram for more spearfishing and dive content!
The short clip of me getting bit by a 7-8ft reef shark. We were spearfishing near Middle Sambos reef off Boca Chica in the Florida Keys when this shark came up behind us.
He first went at my dive buddy Justyn but immediately turned toward me. He first bit my left fin then took a piece out of the right fin before biting my leg and cutting the speargun line. I assumed he was trying to steal the black grouper I was holding but, after I lost the grouper and watched it swim to the bottom, the shark kept coming at us! Justyn went back down for my gun and actually shoved it in the sharks mouth! The shark then took it straight to the bottom while we rushed back to the boat and safety. Always dive with a buddy and someone who is trained in first aid! I would not have made it back to the boat without the help of another strong swimmer and would have bled out had we not been able to apply proper first aid immediately. The shark tore through the skin, fat tissue, muscle sheath, muscle, and unfortunately my tibial artery which caused me to lose more than a liter of blood.
This clearly could have been much worse! Happy to still have my leg even with a piece missing! And we even got my Koah speargun back!!!

How to catch Spanish Mackerel - Where, how, and best lures for mackerel
Quieres Hablar Espanol? Spanish Mackerel are a long time favorite here at Head First Fishing. They are a plentiful species that are always game to bite. They can be found in large schools throughout the coastal bay systems in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. They are most often associated with nearshore waters but will venture far offshore. Most people catch them along the beaches and in the bays. In Florida, they are usually around as long as the water is in the mid 60s or higher.
Spanish are often caught around reefs and wrecks in the upper half of the water column. They also congregate along the edges of dropoffs, tidal flat edges, and sand spoils. The mouths and passes of major bay systems are magnets for spanish mackerel waiting for a meal to come through a pinch point.
You can often see large swarms of spanish feeding on shrimp, squid, sardines, anchovies, and herring. They are aggressive feeders and will stir up a frenzy on the surface when they have pinned a school of their prey near the surface.
Jigs of some form seem to be the best lures to catch these fish. Many different lures such as spoons and plugs work great as well. There is even a popular rig called a bubble and straw rig that uses a plastic bubble half filled with water to act as a weight to throw a lightweight McDonald's straw and single treble hook far from the angler. The leader runs through the straw and connects to a treble. This is retrieved rapidly back and causes a large commotion on the surface. This method is often used while fishing from beach piers. Trolling for spanish mackerel is also effective. Small diving lures and spoons are favorite choices.
Spanish Mackerel are excellent eating fish and are well served fried, baked, or smoked.
