Roaming Around Tanzania & Zanzibar during Oasis Overland Safari
Video highlights from 2 weeks in Tanzania and Zanzibar during our recent Oasis Overland Safari in July-August 2016. This was part of the Oasis Overland Coast-to-Coast itinerary but the Savanah Dawn and the Gorillas, Gameparks, & Zanzibar itineraries both also include this same route. This Tanzania portion of the overland safari began in Arusha, then to Ngorogoro Crater National Park, Tarangire National Park, Marangu hiking and waterfalls, Bagamoyo beach, Zanzibar island, and finally the Tukuyu tea plantations. Traveling with Oasis Overland through Tanzania was an epic adventure in Africa that we highly recommend!

Safari in Kenya - 2 of 5
On the first day of our safari, we visited the Ol Pejeta Conservancy: a 90,000 acre wildlife preserve 330km north of Nairobi, Kenya. This preserve is protected against hunting and allows the animals to roam freely without fences or cages (unless they are blind like Baraka the Rhino).

EPIC!! Cheetah hunts an Impala on Maasai Mara plains - Kenya safari |Award Safaris
Cheetah Fierce, Fast & Ferocious, the world's fastest land animal - The Cheetah. Welcome to Africa's greatest #Wildlife destination, Maasai Mara. Nearly all wild cheetah's can be found in sub-saharan #Africa where they roam freely in the open grassy savannah plains and open forests. On your #Safari you will most likely see a cheetah family and a hunt if you are lucky!!
The cheetah can reach top speed in just 3 seconds. Its body has evolved for speed, with long legs, an elongated spine, adapted claws to grip the ground and long tail for balance.
Cheetahs are carnivorous and live off other animals like rabbits, warthogs, impalas, gazelles among'st other animals. They hunt during the day to avoid competition from other predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas which are more powerful.
Cheetahs are skilful hunters. They use their exceptional eyesight to scan their environment before quietly stalking their marked prey. At the right time, they sprint from cover, knock down their victim and kill it with a bite to the throat.
A cheetah chase usually lasts less than a minute, as sprinting at such mega speeds uses alot of energy. The chase is usually limited to 200-300m.
Cheetah weight range between 34-54kgs with male cheetahs being slightly heavier

ADDRESS: Kimana Sanctuary, Amboseli
OPEN: N/A
Our next stop on our Kenyan Food Tour brought us to the Maasai Homestead. We we watched how the men of the tribe sometimes prepare and roast a whole goat. This usually occurs when the Maasai men spend the night out in the plains after roaming far from home to graze the livestock. Per tradition, they don’t eat in front of women. They however take back certain pieces for the women, once they are done feasting. This bonding time with the Maasai men is said to build fraternity.
???????? RAW BLOOD AND KIDNEY: The goat is slaughtered and the blood is collected in a sufuria. This is drank fresh. Cuts like the kidney are also eaten raw.
???????? GOAT ROAST: The legs are skewered on makeshift spears, and are roasted upright around a central fire. Once ready, this will be cut in front of everyone and passed around the circle.
???????? BLOOD SOUP: The soup is made using herbs to cleanse the system. The intestines are boiled then fried in their own fat, and is then served. The liver is also roasted medium-rare and passed around in the circle until it is gone.

AMBOSELI WILDLIFE SAFARI TOURS:
What are African bush elephants?
They are the world’s largest terrestrial mammal. There are two recognized subspecies of this iconic animal: bush (or savanna) and forest. African bush elephants are the larger of the two and their tusks curve out, while their forest-dwelling cousins are darker and have tusks that are straighter and that point downward.
They can be found in Amboseli National Park, Tsavo East National Park, Nakuru National Park, Nairobi National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve.
Where do elephants live?
They will live in almost any habitat that provides plentiful food and water. Their populations are scattered throughout the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. About 70 percent of their range exists in protected land.
Elephants have a very long nose, which also doubles as an arm.
Their trunk is a long nose that is used for breathing, smelling, drinking, trumpeting, and grabbing objects. Their trunks are also a grooming tool. Grooming consists of using their trunks to cover themselves with mud or water to maintain hydration. They have two fingerlike extensions on the tips of their trunks that are used for holding onto small objects. They also use their trunks to exhibit affection, by frequently touching and caressing one another.
They spend a lot of time eating.
It’s no great surprise these large animals love to eat. Elephants spend the majority of their day roaming across large distances to forage for grasses, fruits, roots, and bark. They can eat up to 136 kilograms (300 pounds) of food and drink 113 to 190 liters (30 to 50 gallons) of water in one day.
They are friendly.
Much like humans, these mammals are social creatures that live in small family groups that usually consist of an older matriarch and several generations of female relatives. Males are typically solitary once matured but may live in small groups of three or four bulls. They take care of weak or injured members and even appear to grieve over dead companions.
Elephant poaching and demand for ivory are driving this mammal toward extinction.
The large ivory tusks on either side of their face—used for foraging for food and water—have long been desired by people. The ivory trade is driven by consumer demand for products made from tusks and supplied by a sophisticated international network of traffickers. Poachers kill this iconic species for its ivory tusks, which are then sold and made into anything from jewelry and crafts to musical instruments to religious objects. At current poaching rates, populations may disappear in the wild within our lifetimes.
Elephant gestation and reproduction is a slow process.
They have longer pregnancies than almost any other mammal. Calves are carried for about 22 months, with cows usually bearing only one calf every three to six years. Their regeneration rate averages 5 to 6 percent annually, compared to the 8 to 9 percent poaching rates, resulting in a net loss in population numbers. Extinction is a very real threat if poaching continues unabated.
Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya | For a Kiss of a Lifetime!
Hey guys,
If you're visiting Nairobi, Kenya soon, be sure to check out the Giraffe Centre. Its roots of creation lies deep in conservation of the Rothschild Giraffe, a subspecies that had declined to only a few hundreds back in the 70's.
The park is open 7 days a week, from 9-5pm. Admission is $10 for foreign passports, so be sure to carry an ID.
The park covers over 140 acres, so plenty of room for the lanky fellas to roam around. I hope you enjoy it!
